To be honest if you've got any of these MDJ Series media players, just pair them up in midi hid mode with Virtual DJ (Vdj). Using the mdjs soundcard into standard mixer like in native mode. They work perfect, info sent to display everything. Can select tracks through the units & their screen to view. Don't even have to look at computer.
But you should still get the latest firmware.
The problem with all these is they made a highly accurate pitch Res model unit 0.001%, which is good (very good considering most only 0.0% at price range) but, put a poorer Res pitch slider in the unit which can't get every increment on the native os or in software via midi. Sounds strange but that's what they've done. All that R&D. It's good enough to mix with manually but you WILL be making further adjustments like it's 1999 during the mix I'm afraid if longer than 30 secs, some will be fine & you will get the optimal setting anyway. That's why most use these in Sync mode on ytube, as it will use the full 0.001% on board, I've no doubt.
With the Vdj software there's always a way to set the pitch perfectly anyway for manual mixing. Plus with stacked wave forms you can see way before you hear when it starts to drift & correct it as it is. You should know anyway with vdjs higher accuracy BPM readout showing you the direction it's slightly out on anyway.

Thanks for this review. I wish there was some info out there about the audio quality but I'm guessing the a/d converters are probably the cheapest u can find.
The part about loud buttons and people recording sets on their phone cracked me up. If someone records music with a phone mic loud buttons are the least of your problems xD

I got the MDJ 900s just as a little extra treat as they were cheap & think eventually software has come to the point it's the way forward over hardware. It has midi hid (&midi hid is midi hid) so to control software, has all the mapples & jog size of bigger pioneer CDJs for nowhere near £1000-£3000 (I also kept my cdj400s for use in Rekordbox). In standalone though get the 6.10 firmware, turn off analysis in machine (that's a time lag & keeps redoing it with the same tracks for some reason) & use the Vcase software to prepare & export tracks & there's no issues. Using Vcase is a fair trade off over price. Also use a USB 2.0 drive & format FAT32. The screen is still way better than them old l.e.d & backlit LCD things even if resolution not as sharp as pioneer/Denon.

Gemini used to make good products, its sad that they have left Pioneer to rule with no competition with their high prices

Hi, I was actually considering the MDJ500 players coming from Numark NDX400 CD players. Having used Numark and all the other brands, it's really solid if used indoors. I've had mine since 2013 and they're still fairly new. Funny how people abuse Pioneer CDJ350s secondhand, and the cue button literally dies too. Above everything I'm really disappointed in these, I'll hold onto my Numarks.

For a brand new pair of XDJ 700s it's about £1100. For second hand ones I've seen them go for about £700 for the pair in good condition.

is that you ellaskins? xD Seriously, you sound so like him hehe
Anyways, good review on these units. These work AMAZINGLY well as midi devices with Virtual DJ (natively mapped and supported). Im using them like that now too cause these crap out all the time in standalone mode and are buggy as hell in that mode. MDJ 900 and 1000 are more stable than the 500, but still buggy nonetheless; would not use in a live setting in standalone mode. With Virtual DJ though no issues at all. Sound quality is also on par with CDJ 2000s and the jog bend on these is great even compared to Pioneers (minus the jog wheel being too light issue that you pointed out on 500s, i concur. 900 and 1000 have dedicated jog tension adjust knobs) and do make for decent practice decks for cheap (or even for gigs, with a laptop and VIrtual DJ or other DJ software of course). Currently have a pair of these and a Numark iM9 mixer hooked to laptop running Virtual DJ using the MDJ 500 soundcard, works great as a cheaper backup/practice system that mimics a pioneer decks and mixer setup
