Ajahn Brahm's talk always makes me relax. A few hours ago, I felt so stressed from job changing, after this video the stress was gone.

I used to have a sign that said, 'The time you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted time'. Loved that! Also, we're human beings, not human doings. I so appreciate Ajahn Brahm's teachings/talks. They have become a highlight in my day. There's so much gentle wisdom in them.

I blew up inside today with anger and enmity towards a few people over the smallest insignificant thing. And just a few days ago I was feeling loving kindness. I don’t get it. I’m surprised by it because I thought I had made a giant step towards peace and tranquility within myself ... only to discover I haven’t. I’ve just been deluding myself.

Well I asked a question online as to why the rules for the monks are so strict regarding sexual intercourse (and masturbation), since from experience one easily notices that after sex one is VERY relaxed (relaxation is after all the theme of this talk). Also, some monks ended up committing suicide because they had too strong a sexual instinct and could not give expression to it (check e.g. Nanavira Thera on Wikipedia). My question was however not asked at the end of the talk.
The rules on sex are extremely strict in the buddhist monastic discipline, e.g. 'When a monk has his penis enter the genital, anal or oral opening of a human being or an animal, male or female, dead or alive, penetrating to a depth equal to the length of a sesame seed or greater, then he is expelled from the Sangha and cannot ordain again in his life time'. So I am wondering why they avoid talking about this question, it seems that the forgiving attitude that Ajahn Brahm promotes does not apply (at least according to the rules) to sex. Why is that? Are they repressing something, since they do not want to clearly and openly talk about it?

Paul Williams interesting topic ..."Puritanism is the fear that someone somewhere is having fun", yet monks are supposed to live up to Puritan standards 🤔

Buddhism functions as an integrated whole. Like an ecosystem. Morality, meditation, following the rules, they all function together and reinforce each other. Among laymen who do experience any degree of enlightenment, it often occurs on a retreat when they are living under stricter rules and not having sex, etc. If you can relax without sexual pleasure, that is a deeper and more potent form of relaxation which will draw you closer to nibbana. Also note that Ajahn Brahm has said before that once one begins to have success with meditation, reaching what he calls the "deep meditations," which I assume refer to upacara samadhi and especially the first jhana and above, that pleasure reduces one's desire for worldly pleasure because it is so potent and yet so pure.

Merle Langlois Yes I know that argument but it's not clear how it applies in practice. Ajahn Brahm said that he ordained because he experienced a very deep meditation when still a student. He ordained and practiced daily and then, after more than five years of being a monk, during his 6th vassa, 'unmonkish thoughts of lust and violence would overwhelm (his) defenses and play at will with (his) mind'. (from p 261 of his book Mindfulness Bliss and beyond) So even someone as gifted as he is in meditation, probably attaining deep states, had lust. And the Buddha experience jhana as a child under the rose apple tree, which didn't stop him from marrying later on and enjoying sexual love.

Somebody could always ask him that particular question in the write-in part, i.e., at what point in his practice did he stop experiencing sensual lust. Of course, he might have to avoid claiming attainment while still answering the question but it would be interesting to hear.
Personally I've seen a monk asked that very same question and he gave a really crappy non-answer. So I am still curious about that.
