District 9 is a hyper-real sci-fi thriller film from 2009, made by Neill Blomkamp and Peter Jackson after the Halo movie fell through. There's aliens and much more. District 9 (2009)
South Africa, Johannesburg. For 20 years now, the District 9 refugee camp has housed the world's biggest refugee problem: more than a million aliens who have fled their own world. The coexistence of humans and aliens is not going well and humanity's patience is starting to run out. When the aliens arrived, the world expected a huge step forward in technology, but the aliens' huge range of weapons has not been utilized despite the efforts - activation requires the alien's DNA from its user. Tension between humans and aliens rises when the Multi-National United (MNU), which is responsible for controlling the aliens, decides to move the entire alien population to a new, more isolated camp. One of MNU's field workers, Wikus Van Der Merwe, is exposed to a foreign virus while preparing the transplant, which begins to painfully change his DNA. No he doesnt mean prequel at all. In district 9 you feel like you immediately understand all the concepts and dynamics, as though there was a movie before this one introducing those concepts. D9 somehow skipped all that rigmarole and gets you immersed instantly

That would be a little cliche, I'd imagine he'd get the ship fixed then go down and just pick up all the Aliens

One of the best alien movies so far. No freackin american military propaganda and stuff... Whether we get a sequel or not, I will always love this movie.

I was gonna comment about this lol.
In halo you are literally thrown into the world from the pillar of autumn onto the halo ring where even the main characters do not know wtf is going on. But faster than light slip space jumping is as normal as calling an Uber. You don’t even learn about how the covenant works until you play as a literal covenant.
Neil Blomkamp and Bungie understood this. Whatever the halo tv show is missed the mark by a mile. Season 2 gives me hope with them on the ring now but if they can’t save it after 3 seasons it’s over.
As a South African, I’m really proud of this movie. As a young aspiring filmmaker, I never thought we would be able to produce this level of sci-fi and art in such a way that it grabs the attention of the world. Neil Bloomkamp (the director) truly changed my life with this movie and showed me that filmmaking in South Africa, when done right, can mesmerise audiences around the world.

Emotion was the key driver of this movie, I remember seeing it with my family right when it came out. It honestly didn’t even feel like a science fiction movie, more of a metaphorical mockumentary with a sci-fi theme
Yes, the bulk of the movie is the very human story under all the crazy aspects of it. It is veery emotional and relatable. The scifi and action aspect are just the cherry on top the ice cream. I love this movie so much 😊
This is classic sci-fi, ie- what sci-fi used to be. Old-school sci-fi was often based on the idea of asking how our world would be different if you changed or introduced just one thing. Modern sci-fi often tries to take you to entirely new worlds, which is a different kind of sci-fi.
In the opening “man on the street” interviews, they got regular South Africans and asked them their opinion of aliens - the real migrant human beings actually living there. The most appropriate ones were then aired, just with the context of the movie changing what sort of aliens their genuine answers were about.

when chris finds the disection lab with all the bodies of his people even without human expresion i felt that horror and despair, its one of the most memorable scenes in a film packed with them.

@@mattdragon333 oh no way cuase of what chris says about the feul, the catilist for flying the ship and changing humans, which is aperently an coincidental effect becuase the feul/control liquid is part biological, so vilkis is almost cirtainly the only human turned prawn, but yeah many of the stranded are dead, and many more will likly die in the years to come. but even the hyper evil humans in th eiflm recognize the posibility that the ship will return on a recuse mission or a mission of revenge... in ether case it would be a death sentence for humanity to have killed all the remaining survivors.
Very underrated movie. Sharlto Copley improvised most of his scenes. He should've won an Oscar.

It wasn't even nominated for Best Director or Best Actor, just like Moon which also astonishingly was not nominated for a single award at the Oscars that year.
Yes yes, maybe Avatar got in the way and hoovered up nominations and votes that would have otherwise have gone to District 9 or Moon - I don't begrudge Avatar its nominations or its wins for Art Direction, Cinematography and Visual Effects which it absolutely deserved.
But District 9 and Moon were both more deserving of Best Picture and Best Director nominations/votes than Avatar and James Cameron.

What I loved the most about this movie is how unprepared the characters feel. Everything feels genuine.
Absolutely, how lost and messy everyone feels and how the situations are
5:00 the fact that the aliens can't understand what's going on reinforces the ideas of the film, rather than being the typical overshadowed point. They are being subjected to a "legal process" that they don't participate in.
It was such a good metaphor for the way white settlers in the Americas negotiated deals with the natives full of language that the natives didn't understand, and then used military power to enforce these deals.
This sole masterpiece sells me every next Neil's movie. And even his entire Oats Studios project. None of it was the same though.
That Vietnam one was great. A few real standouts in there
The Vietnam one was the first of the Oats Studies I saw, I didn’t realise it was a short. I was so angry when it just ended! 😅 his visual style is just brilliant

what a great movie. This CGI still holds to this day, especially with the practical effects and sets. To think that the budget was 30mil. Also when i was a kid I was so impressed about the aliens not landing in LA or NY but Johannesburg, where tf is Johannesburg lol

South Africa's founding father was a Dutch navigator named Jan van Rebeeck.
So a lot of places' names were heavily inspired, if not directly taken from, european languages.

I put this movie on as background noise when I was sick and fourteen. Ended up sobbing my eyes out and ranting to anyone who would listen about it. No wonder!

Chappie is highly underrated but both films only barely made their budgets back and Blomkamp couldn't get his Alien movie off the ground likely partly because they knew that would need a budget of 150 million dollars plus and his movies weren't making 300 mil plus worldwide never mind US alone and that's the minimum return you need for a 150 mil budget even before you add on any marketing costs....it goes up to needing 400 or even 500 mil plus at the box office to break even once you add in marketing costs on a 150 million dollar movie.

Blomkamp got District 9 made for just 30 mil, Chappie cost 50 mil, Elysium cost 120 mil BEFORE Marketing costs are added in!
Chappie barely topped 100 mil worldwide, Even once you add in streaming, dvd sales etc. there's basically no way Chappie made a profit.
Elysium made 286 mil worldwide but once you add in marketing costs it basically needed streaming/dvd sales just to break even.
Elysium is pretty mediocre
Elysium is like a really, really solid 3 star film. I like the idea of Elysium more than the execution. But it's still a million times better than most of the dreck out there.
Elysium definitely isn't a bad movie but it's hard to call it especially good. It's a good looking movie, as Blomkamp is very good at visual style, but that's the only stand-out thing about it. The actual writing is middling.
I had no idea what I was about to watch when I went to the see this movie in theaters. I thought it was going to be standard humans vs alien stuff but man, what an experience!

this man has the greatest superpower of all, weaving a sponsor segway into literally any portion of his script!
When it comes to any story, understanding what information is important and needs to be detailed/explained and what can be left vague can make or break a story. It's something of an art to vaguely present information in such a way that allows people to accept there is an explanation without needing one because that explanation isn't needed to actually understand the plot.
That's why Prospect is one of my favorite Sci-fi films. It's a slice-of-life that presents 90% of its worldbuilding through set design. Not a profound script, but to watch these characters make their way in such a subdued and believable alternate future carries a lot of charm that makes it worth rewatching. Plus it's got Pedro Pascal.
Shows with terrible worldbuilding like RWBY and Hazbin Hotel oughtta take some notes...

Pacific rim and how the backstory is more interesting than the world they currently live in.
I wish movies would not skip how the world went from normal to this Kaiju or post apocalyptic world and see how people change and adapt
Yes that's good but sometimes it's great to just be dropped into a really cool world and that works too. Avatar The Last Airbender just drops you in even though its after a fun and engaging exposition intro dump we encounter so much in the show that isn't explained in the 1 minute intro so the exposition works when needed
Pacific Rim would suck if they focused on the backstory. The time between attacks is long. It would need to explain why the standard military weapons don't work. And so on. It wouldn't work very well that way at all. It's an awesome dumb movie, and if you try to explain the dumb, you're only going to lose the audience. But keep the awesome coming, and people will be along for the ride.
That said, what you're saying is why I generally like movies about the start of a zombie outbreak, with all the chaos and such, but don't care for things set past that point.
I disagree. Ive watched so much media and played so many games, I dont really care when media tries to establish the setting, because 90% of the time its just not interesting or unique, and it doesnt really increase my enjoyment by understanding some niche thing and minute details. exposition dumps are bad writing and design, nobody wants a history lesson to watch a 1:30 long movie.

Probably the greatest science fiction movie in the last two decades. Even my dad who hates science fiction, loved the movie about the prawns.
As A South African, I love this movie, more so as the movie represents South Africa really well (minus the aliens, of course) Also the next time anyone asks me if I grew up wrestling lions and riding zebras, I'll know they didn't watch this
Reminds me a lot of how in the first Terminator, Reese does those big dumps of lore, as they are chased by the titular killing machine. It doesn't get boring because Sarah needs the context just as much as we do and there's always an action beat to break things off when it is in danger of getting too navelgazing.
A balance that the non-Camerin follow-ups have struggled with ever since.
For a bit of that first movie, there's a question whether Reese is telling the truth or is crazy, too, until we see the Terminator do inhuman things. That spin helps the viewer stay invested as well
Very good point. Watched the other day for first time n long time and was impressed with the reese info dumps and how they felt like a part of the story, even looked forward to them.

Filmento has the best ads in the website because in order to understand what he's talking about, he uses the ad to convey a message in the video. It's pretty smart, you usually can't skip most of it.

One of the, if not the best sci-fi movie out there. Completely underrated, everything about it was beautifully done.
The rarest feat where the overall film budget, the distributors, the specific producer and their former in-house Vfx and practical effects company, the production crew, the type of actors chosen for this particular project, the film script and the director helming this directorial debut created the most underrated best film in a long long time.

Such a special movie to me, watching it when I was far too young and liking it because it had cool aliens and the coolest mech I had ever seen, to it being one of my all time favourites with a more mature look at it. The things it has to say about my country's history is beautiful. Not to mention the masterclass level effects which in my ever so humble opinion, hold up so well.
I agree. It is a great movie. One gets sucked in and it seems so real and relatable, You hate humans, but also understand them, you feel this dread of being trapped. It is also harsh like reality without glammer and glory. Rough and honest.
A+ segway dude. That was classy, absolutely point & case. Another thing that made this movie so excellent is that even if you removed ALL of the sci-fi elements, it would still be a well made melodrama mockumentary. And that is something not enough dicrectors ask themselves, "If I strip away all the sci-fi bullshit and CGI, is this still a good movie?"

I don't think it doesn't make sense with the language barrier, they had time to learn it. I love when things like this are already established. Even though I love going deeper in to language.
I can only think of one flaw and that's Wikus hitting Christopher unconscious to go alone. But I also get that he was desperate.
As for the transforming fuel "plot hole", I just thought that, since the prawns were all locked in the "servant quarters" of the ship... they were probably bio-engineered. They didn't originally have that form, and the experiment from their overlords turned them into what they looked today with the express purpose of creating a self replicating fuel source. If your fuel just needs to eat garbage to multiply, that's an extremely efficient space travel.
So, if the prawns become fuel when distilled, it could be that the fuel turns other living beings into prawns.
Just a cool idea I had that explains a lot of the unanswered questions of the movie
That's a great and terrifying hypothesis: what if Earth was intended to be a fuel stop - if the masters hadn't died humans would have faced an invasion and mass kidnapping to top up the fuel tanks

But yeah, it's quite terrifying, and that would give an even deeper meaning to the assassination of the masters, since it was probably done by Christopher Johnson (the main prawn character) to save their child from becoming fuel.
That does actually explain why they go crazy for cat food a protein rich slop made from unpaletable food scraps would be similar to the feed they would have gotten in the ship for efficiencies sake

Filmento...he learned his own film lessons. The narrative and promotional are seamlessly integrated into this presentation. Now I *want* to see this movie.
I just love how I was so engrossed in this man’s quest to cure himself and prove the allegations wrong that the aliens feel like they belong. And the ending (I hate cliffhangers) was just so well made. You don’t even expect him to get cured anymore. Just acceptance, for him and ours, albeit a dash of hope.
I believe there are multitude of reasons why the trilogy was cancelled. I believe we will get our answers too late.

District 9 with $30 mln. budget does better job at being blockbuster than many actual blockbusters with $170-300 mln. budgets (especially in recent years). Even Neill Blomkamp himself can't outdo his debut feature film for 15 years
District 9 is a great example of a movie that doesn't treat its audience like idiots and trusts that we can keep up. You really don't need to waste time over-explaining things the audience already understands if you know how to tell a story efficiently and visually and *show* most information rather than tell it. One short montage of news footage is worth about 10 minutes of extraneous exposition or voice over narration sharing pointless details and lore that could already be inferred. It really just comes down to an understanding of cinema fundamentals. I don't necessarily want a sequel to District 9 but I hope Blomkamp can make another film that's as good as this.
District 9 is the perfect example of how subtlety in a movie can go a very long way.
From both not dwelling on obvious sci-fi stuff in face of a greater, more mundane issue to even the camerawork itself not actively dwelling on the obvious CGI aliens makes the movie feel so much more like it's just mundane life and a lot more relatable.
D9 was so great it's unbelievable. Blomkamp nailed it 110% and Sharlto Copley gave a terrific performance. That dude is always great whenever he pops up in something.

What if the aliens didn't look like the "prawns" In the first place but there was a fuel leak on the ship and it forced the inhabitants of the ship into transforming into them. or Same thing but the ship arrived on some other alien planet and turn those aliens into prawns and our main prawn just wanted to reverse engineer the fuel since they didn't create it so that they could reverse the transformation.

The "fuel" was found in all their tech in small amounts. It's why it took so long to gather.
My head cannon is there's an exposure all the time which causes low level mutations to match, that's why their tech can be tied to prawn DNA rather than their pre-mutated form.
The prawns probably looked like prawns for a long time as a result of their long term exposure.
The District 9 DVD had an in-universe featurette that gave us extra info on the movie's world (like the fact that the aliens are mostly drones and thus their lack of initiative, also giving us a hint that Christopher may be part of their lost ruling caste, the fact that they're hermaphrodites, etc). Such a great movie! I love re-watching it from time to time.
I love this movie! Normally I prefer fantasy over sci-fi, but it has to have a very interesting concept to catch my attention. Loving your review while laughing! 😆💛

I've felt that you're one of the best film critics out there for a while. So I hope it doesn't come across as "thanks for confirming my bias senpai uwu" fanboyism when I say thank you for voicing what I've been saying about this movie for a while: you can tear it apart after the fact all you want but this is a damn good movie to watch, and I've always enjoyed it for how well it tells its story. It uses aliens as a tool for telling a story about alienation. And it does so effectively by making it feel personal, even though it can be thought of as someone being "de-personed". I've defended this movie for years from people without understanding what they have against it, but to me it's an example of sci-fi done right.
I have followed you for years and I've seen a lot of your videos. I thought you peaked with the mission impossible 6 video, but this feels like a magnus opus. This one video alone can fix hollywood movies by making things make sense! Amazing fucking work!
First time I watched this was on an ipod video, about a year after it came out - had never even heard of it.
Satirical, human, high concept, incredible effects and some of the coolest weapons ever put on screen.. the "docu" format and naturalistic style were the *perfect* choice for this story

probably one of the best movies ever made. comparable to masterpieces like pulp fiction.
its still sad no one made a sequel to this or anything in its universe. So much potential to tell more stories in it.
The story for D10 is an easy and obvious one; Christopger coming back to save his kind. He promised and came across as someone who would keep his word. The story doesn't have to include Wikus or much else from D9, it should be a stand alone continuation sequel. And with it you get the freedom to take the story in almost any direction. I'll collect my paycheck now 💪😅

I don't think the humans understood the alien language. Vickus gets questioned by an alien, Christopher's friend iirc, and Vickus ignores him.
What? Of course they understand it.
Disregarding all of the previous instances in the movie of humans and aliens speaking to each other, when Christopher and Wikus have been at MNU and got the fuel for the ship Christopher explains to Wikus that it will take 3 years to fix him.
Wikus says to Chris: "Go slowly with the clicks there, it sounded like you said 3 years, like 3 human years."
Humans have learned what the clickety-clicks mean and the aliens have learned what our monkey ooga-boogas mean.
If I can understand Chinese and a Chinese person can understand English, there is no need for either of us to speak any other language but our own.
@@emil87th I had assumed that Wikus only understood him in that scene because he was infected.
@@DeetotheDubs When Wikus serves Christopher with the eviction notice Chris says "Why am I being evicted?" and Wikus replies "Yes, it's an eviction notice".
This is barely after getting the bio-tech sprayed in his face so his transformation hasn't really started yet, also the guard that's with him would've reacted to Wikus suddenly understanding alien as the first one to do so ever. He doesn't.
The reason they don't really talk *with* Christopher in that scene, but talk *at* him, is that previously they'd only come across the worker drone type of aliens, not very smart.
Christopher is upper caste, pilot maybe (?), and as such can carry a conversation, not something the other two are used to. I think Wikus even says "this one is obviously a little sharper". Why would he say that if he didn't understand anything Christopher says?
And then after that the whole spiel about taking away Christophers son and putting him in a 1x1 box, they're clearly conversing.
@emil87th I thought that "Yes, it's an eviction notice." line after being asked was just coincidental and not a direct response. Like how a parent gives candy to a kid, the kid babbles something and the parent says, "Yes, it's candy.".
That other line about Chris being sharper is a good example in your favor, though. It's been a while since I've seen the movie, so I'm having trouble remembering.
I'll have to go rewatch, but I'm now thinking you may be right. Even if Wickus wasn't fluent, maybe just enough to serve the task.

Because they've both learned each others language, the aliens have been on Earth for 20+ years, easily enough time for us to figure out what "RRRrrrTRRRRrORPCHRRRT" means (it means cat food).
Dude, this movie is top 3 sci-fi movies ever for me.
I've seen it maybe 30-40 times now, at least once a year since it came out, more often than not 2-3 times a year, sometimes 4-5.
I can quote it from memory.
It's just so damned good!
One of my all time favorite movies. Definitely the best example of a realistic mech in a movie, and It hit so hard on so many levels.

This movie feels so perfectly made in the style that it's trying to be, that any defect blends flawlessly into the narrative and overwrites itself into being perfect again.... I could honestly watch this movie for the 14th time again and still feel the same amount of emotion, even more so now that im older and watching it again.
I saw this in theaters when it released. It’s remained one of my favorites. I just showed it to my roommate last week and he said he never seen anything quite like it. I agree.

I still believe Peter Jackson is the one that made this movie work so well because Neill Blomkamp hasn't made a single good movie since.
elysium was okay. but yeah he hasnt made very many good movies past this one.
A great example of "Learning by doing" or "Learning through experience"
I do love movies and stories that shows you what's going on as a direct part of the plot. Early seasons of a Game of Thrones does this as well. You're following the characters and experience the world with them in real time. I LOVE this type of storytelling! 😊

I love Chapie but it’s mainly because it has so much heart (and of course Die Antwoord)…. But in terms of cinema it’s a much inferior movie

Chappie was a dissappointment to me it lacked the soul and depth. The script was weak, acting was not good but the VFX were good.

The most memorable scene for me is the military general getting ripped off limb by limb and the mc turning into alien as his left eye changed. My 12 year old brain at the time tattooed it in my memory
