What a great memory! My first trip to Aussie was in 1956 on a Qantas Super Connie from SF to Sydney. I still have the little flight bag that I was given, and still remember my invitation to the flight deck - I was 5 years old. That trip took, as I recall, 36 hours with 24 hours flight time and several stops. I remember stopping in Suva in the middle of the night, walking out of the place, and getting smothered by the incredible humidity. Great Video - and Thank You!!!
My first flight on one of these aircraft was in 1954, from Cape Town to Salisbury, damn nearly died as the aircraft went too high and I went blue from oxygen deprivation, aged 2 weeks!
@@scallywag9392 Wow! I was about to say how lucky you were to ride in a Connie but then I read further and . . . wow, wow, wow it was almost your last ride. Terrifying. VERY terrifying. Glad you survived.
Years ago Dad gave me his 1955 USAF aircraft recognition manual for the civilian Ground Observer Corps & page 164 says, "The exhaust stacks of practically all conventional aircraft engines glow cherry red from the tremendous heat of exhaust gasses. On some aircraft, flames can be seen roaring out of the exhaust stacks, occasionally giving the impression that the engine is on fire. This is particularly true when extra power is being used, as in takeoff or climbing. In darkenss, this glow or flame is often discernible from the ground ..."
So precious to see such important planes from Australia's aviation history flying so gracefully in this day and age. Those low altitude fly pasts are next level. Thank you for the footage.😍
This very Connie former, C-121C 54-0157, served with several Air National Guard Units including the 167th Aeromedical Sq. West Virginia Air National Guard. I have flown several times across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe while in the Military on the 167th Connie's and my very first Military aircraft ride was on one of the 167th Connie's to USAF Basic Training in the Amarillo, Texas. way back in May 1966. Glad to see this majestic bird still flying ! Great Video, brings back a lot of good memories !!!
I also went to Amarillo for basic training back in December 1966. Froze my ass off. I also worked on MacArthur’s VC-121A during its restoration. Great airplane.
Beautiful Connie! Love watching her fly overhead. HARS do such amazing work to keep these beautiful machines alive and in the sky, where they belong. Thanks for the great video! ❤
What a beautiful bird! With all the aircraft I've seen in my life, Connie by far is one of the most beautiful shapes. My only regret is never having flown in one. This feeling I also have for Concorde. Thank you for the operators and maintenance crew for keeping this historical aircraft in the air.👍✨️
Excellent footage and production, always terrific to see these magnificent aeroplanes flying. Thanks, SydSquad, and the volunteers who make this happen!
Flew on these many times from St.Louis,Mo. to D.C. with TWA. Outstanding flights with service that couldn't be beat. Miss them both. This is a real beauty here.
When I was very young Connie flew over my home often and I always ran outside to listen to its beautiful sound and watch it fly over Woonona NSW. A few years ago I got to go inside it myself and it is awesome.
My dad took me to Kansas City Municipal in the late '50's to watch airplanes. The TWA Connies were the stand outs. The Connie was definitely an influence on me pursuing a career as a pilot. Thanks for the nice video.
Lovely to see the Volunteers down at HARS keeping the old birds running, I am a train enthusiast, and, just like the old Steamers, I hope HARS bring some young blood in and train them up on how to maintain these machines.
In 1957 I flew in an Eastern Air Lines Connie from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Idlewild Airport (presently JFK), with my family on my first flight ever on a week long vacation to the City. I was 8 years old. I’ll never, ever forget that trip.
I did a tour of HARS aviation museum when I was in Sydney last year and saw the Connie up close. So cool to see it spark into life again. Thanks for the upload ✈️
Stunning! What a beauty! First plane I ever flew on - (not a Super - an L-749) - TWA across the Atlantic - March 1952. Happy to see this magnificent beast is still operational in the skies. Thanks for your efforts.
that was so cool to see it get started and to see the smoke i wondered if the pilots would be excited and nervous at the same time loved the video and hope you had a good time at the airshow cheers
I still remember my first commercial flight. My dad took me from Miami, FL to Washington, DC in an Eastern Airlines Constellation. We went from sunny Miami to a dreary rainy DC. Those were truly the "Queens of the Skies". Beautiful planes!
I’m in Missouri and our airport had an airshow where a Connie flew in from Kansas City. I’m thinking it’s more of a museum piece now. I’ve flown on many vintage aircraft….a totally different time. Very impressive they kept this airworthy.
That is the era of airlines and aircraft I love the best. The new aircraft are technological marvels but there is just something soulful about a propliner!
A stunningly beautiful aircraft, one of my earliest memories was an abandoned example at Malta's Luca airport that was later converted to a restaurant/ bar. Eventually abandoned again and destroyed by vandals. Hats off to all those who put in so much hard work to keep her airworthy and the few surviving aircrew that can still fly these legends. I did see the Breitling Constellation take to the air during the Duxford flying legends airshow some years ago but I believe that and the Dutch Connie are grounded for now. is this the only one flying now?
Oh Wow! This brings back childhood memories; I grew up only 11 miles from LGA, and under the right conditions one could hear a connie taking off. They frequently flew over our house; the sound of those engines was quite unique and I could identify one flying over without seeing the airplane. Thank you for the terrific video!
I flew from New York to Paris in a Super in '57 or '58 with my parents - I was 14 or 15 then. The seats made down into Pullman berths at night. There was only a curtain that separated the cockpit from the cabin. You could hear when the pilot changed speeds on the two-speed superchargers - or were they turbos? Simpler and more elegant times...
WoW❤️🔥👍 For me, the Lockheed Super Constellation - lovingly called Super Connie - is, next to the De Havilland DH.106 Comet, the most beautiful long-haul airliner from the fifties. Excellent shots of a real heartwarmer. Thank you.
I believe this is the most beautiful plane ever made. Also, I also love propeller planes. They have the most beautiful sound. What a piece of engineering and history.
Members of the HARS team flew back and forth from the USA for seven years, rebuilding this wonderful old girl, and then flying her back to Australia, where she's the price of the fleet. I'm very lucky to live only a couple of miles from the airfield and any time she's up I rush outside to see her slowly amble by....
As a two-stroke motorcycle fan of fifty years or so, I’m quietly amazed at how these big radials manage to clean out and run so nicely after those big-oiled-up starts.
The oil in a radial engine seeps into the bottom cylinders and that is why the engine has to be rotated 3 times before priming and why they blow a lot of smoke before the cylinders are cleared and the engine runs evenly. They also leak oil when cold.
Those flybys made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. The beauty, grace and power are thrilling to behold. All this and prop reverse too! Lockheed definitely had it's act together when they built this beauty. Wow!
My favorite of all prop driven airliners! Connie is truly the best of it's technology for the old piston engines and stylish sleek look. I wish I could own one . . . . or more!

Also flew with Navy, mid 60s out of Kefilck, Iceland. Have photos out window of volcano eruption, Sursey I think. Mechanic and part-time crew member VW-13. Can still visualize the wings flapping and the flames coming out of PRT's during night flight's
My Dad was an FE on these things. I remember as a small boy walking him walk on the wings while he was "tipping the tanks",ie physically checking the actual amount of fuel on board. I remember looking up at him like he was almost a god. I still have his ray band aviator sunglasses that he wore, not the BS they sell these days. This clip brought all that to mind. 0:27 , 10+ years ago I got a NOS air scoop from a guy who was thinking of turning it upside down for a nose cone on a 50s style Indy racer replicar. Nobody knew what it fit but obviously high quality aircraft construction. I sold it, and I guess it ended up at Chanute. A guy later sent me a pic of an identical scoop swung down out of the way to fix a leaking oil cooler below the engine on a Super Constellation. If you need a new one of those scoops there may be one floating around Chanute base area.
I first fell in love with the L1049 Super Constellation (passenger version) from Bugs Bunny cartoons of the 50's. 15 years later, I was blessed to be assigned to the 552nd McClellan AFB) and the 79th (Homestead AFB). accruing close to 2500 flight hours on the EC-121 Super Connie with the USAF. Finest 3 engine aircraft ever built. And like a Harley, if she wasn't leaking oil, she wasn't running. Grab a spare chute for a pillow, your flight jacket to cover yourself (well, cover HALF of yourself), and let the steady drone of the 3350's lull you to a 2 hour nap that felt like6 hours of peaceful sleep. And FWIW, the FIRST "non-medical" female crew members in the military were surveillance radar operations on the Connie, back at the 79th, Homestead.
What a magnificent aircraft & piece of aviation history. An absolute beauty & it’s so good to see that the aircraft is so well taken care of. Thanks so much for a great video. Made my day! 👍👍👍
I enjoyed flying B-52's and after I flew crop dusters for a couple of years for fun. BUT Connie is what an airplane is meant to be. I would give my eye teeth just to ride in her. Great job guys and gals that restored her she is lovely

What a beautiful bird she is! I realise that the new must grow old, just like us, but I often think that it happens too quickly!
She is so beautiful. Thank you to everyone that has kept her in such good condition.
