This is the process of a Pastel Portrait made by Graciela Bombalova, BOGRA, from an Old Man. To draw this portrait I've used Soft Pastels on Canson paper. The portrait is made from a photography due the advanced age of the model, almost 90 years old!. In order to make a good portrait it's very important to have a good picture...

Wounderful artwork
I was mesmerized as I watched your approach to portrait painting with pastels especially of this older man. Layer after layer until I wondered when will you decide to end it! :) I was getting nervous. :) You kept pushing and pushing (which I have a tendency "not" to do enough!) I liked how you chose not to do too much blending in his face and kept the effects of different colors/shapes/values of the folds! Like the broad strokes in the hat, shirt and background. Just wonderful. Thank you for the inspiration! :) I have a magazine picture of an beautiful, smiling, elderly, dark-skinned face that I want to paint and I am thinking of using your approach! :)

Sometimes I push more than I should!!! :) In fact you never know how the work will end or when to finish!! I also get nervous sometimes. :) Some portraits need or ask a lot, and some others come to life by themselves, like magic...easy. Each one is different..It is good not to do enough as you said..You can always add details and sometimes it is better to stop on time. Thank you for your nice comments!! muy buena la combinación de colores sombras y luz , mi única duda es en cuanto la forma que comienzas a dibujar me da la sensación de que utilizas una técnica de calque , pero espero estar equivocado

No es una técnica de calque...Aunque creo que no hay que descartar ningún método que ayude a un artista a realizar mejor su obra.

What do you use to draw the outline of the old man in the beginning? Just a brown pastel?

I loved this tutorial. The finished portrait was realistic, but I preferred him at stage 6.50/7mins into video.

Yes. I understand that you like "unfinished" works..I also do but sometimes you need more "details" and sometimes you don´t know when to stop!! You are incredibly talented artist and a pleasure to watch! This adorable gentleman has a name, I do not think you should call him "old man".I feel you should change it, and your video would have more value.
