Makeup & Menopause haha, I want to have a long live as a fly to visit as many walls as possible 😅 (I heard that the life expectancy of some flies is only 1 day)
“I happen to be in good shape right now,” he said. “My knee (a recurring problem) is OK . . . I don’t want to dance the things that I can’t do as well as I used to. The big bravura ballets like ‘Don Q.’ aren’t for me now. I would rather take another chance and do something that stretches me. “ ‘What can I do new?’ That is what I always ask. I am talking to (choreographer) Mark Morris. I would like to work again with Jerry Robbins. I am always talking to Twyla (Tharp). We’ll do something together if the knee allows.” LA Times article by Daniel Cariega, 1989 quote of Baryshnikov’s. This jives with what I heard at the time when I was a student in an ABT feeder school.
I grew up near to where Nureyev had his Virginia house. Several locals worked for him. Through them, I always got the impression that Nureyev was (my words--) still very much a boy of the ballet, as in the sense where dancers are commonly called "boy" or "girl" even after they are men and women. It says a lot actually of both the art form and of Nureyev. It's not a criticism at all to stay with what you love. I contrast that however to what I heard about Baryshnikov. People always said he was future-focused, wanted to explore dance and acting and other arts and have a family. Well, he's now the father of four, I think, and a grandfather. He's also got the Baryshnikov Arts Center that supports lots of different artists. Looks like he's had a very rich, diverse, interesting life! (And that's all the gossip this gal's got LOL!)
I’m having trouble figuring out the placement of my upper back in relationship to my pelvis in arabesque. I find that that my upper back feels stuck and I can’t get any flexibility from that part of my back which makes me either splay my ribs out or open up my hips. Some teachers have told me to open the hip but I’ve been following you and now I understand there is a better and safer method out there to follow. Will you be tackling how placement is affected in arabesque?
Is it perhaps because the general selfishness of the Americans just took and took and ate him up, spit him out, and he just got tired. Someone with his brilliance is like the candle that burns so bright, but can't take the shadow it casts on his soul, his melancholy is so evident to me. I think he is the best male dancer of our century and I am not a dancer, but am in awe of those that are. Artists of any kind get hurt by those around them, wanting to glean some of their talent and brilliance. Perhaps he had to gather his light and save it for those in his family that are the ones that truly love and understand him. Thank you so much for what you do.
Hello again, thanks for the video, very interesting. Talking about famous dancers, a couple of videos ago I asked you about Olesya Novikova, Sergei Polunin, Marinela Nunez, and you replied that you would record something... have you done it yet, have I missed it? Sorry to be impatient, live is short 😅🙈 Stay healthy 🍀
Mathilde Wesendonck I too asked a question a few videos back and he said he would talk about it in last weeks “ ask me anything”. He hasn’t yet unfortunately, I think he’s just busy.
Hi, I am struggling very much with the depth of my pile it is very shallow and not easy relaxed into, is there anything I can do like exercises massage etc?
Great question, Eric. Long time soviet/
Russian balletomane and listener, first time commentator here.
Love what you’re doing. Please don’t stop.
Appreciate your support, I’m just getting started.
Cheers - EC
Can you please give us more info on what might have happened? This is so interesting.
He's too polite to say. But read my post above and think about what has happened to Mischa over the years.
Oh, to be a fly on the wall!

Interesting! I'd never even thought about this. I would really like to hear from him.

Genius.

facts, please. Speculations and comments based on personal bias are not useful. Facts would be useful.

I thought he was involved in a company for older dancers. But, yes, he has been quiet the last few years.

Watch podcast #287, this is the only plie you’ll ever need in ballet.
