  • Wide stereo mix of the 1957 single, also known as 'Santa Catalina'. It reached number two in the US charts a year later. Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys cited this song as a major influence on his music.
The song is written by Bruce Belland, the lead singer, and Glen Larson, the baritone.
In the lyrics, one can hear the writer's longing for the sunny island of Santa Cantalina. It lies about 26 miles south of LA's coast, or 40 kilometres, as mentioned in the song. On the island, one can find many hotels, beaches, and if you're lucky, romance.
The label, Capitol Records, was initially uninterested in the song. But with the endorsement of Nancy Sinatra, Capitol put it on the B-side of the Four Preps' single "It's You". The B-side became a surprise hit with its windy, light vocals and overall uplifting feel.
In 1958, Belland and Larson penned "Big Man", Four Preps' next big hit, which peaked at number 2 in the UK and no. 5 in the US charts. In the following years, the duo also went on to write "Ain't That Just the Way", which would become a chart topping hit. Twice. First for Barbi Benti in 1975 in Sweden. Then again, over twenty years later, when Lutricia McNeal covered it 1996 with a R&B twist and turned it into a massive hit. Top 5 in Sweden, the UK, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and even New Zealand. Bruce Belland and Glen Larson never expected to have such a big hit so late in their careers.
Ed Cobb, another singer heard on the recording, is responsible for writing "Tainted Love" for Gloria Jones, which was later turned into a number one synth-pop hit by the UK duo Soft Cell in 1981. He also wrote the hit garage rocker "Dirty Water" for the band The Standells, which he also produced.
    Lyrics:
    Twenty-six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin' for me,
Santa Catalina, the island of romance,
    romance, romance, romance.
    Water all around it ev'rywhere,
tropical trees and the salty air,
but for me the thing that's a-waitin' there's romance.
It seems so distant, twenty-six miles away, restin' in the water serene.
I'd work for anyone, even the Navy, who would float me to my island dream.
Twenty-six miles, so near, yet far.
I'd swim with just some water wings and my guitar.
I can leave the wings but I'll need the guitar
    for romance, romance, romance, romance.
    Twenty-six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin' for me,
Santa Catalina, the island of romance,
    romance, romance, romance.
    Water all around it ev'rywhere,
tropical trees and the salty air,
but for me the thing that's a-waitin' there's romance.
A tropical heaven out in the ocean covered with trees and girls.
If I have to swim I'd do it forever till I'm gazin' on those island pearls.
Forty kilometers in a leaky old boat,
Any old thing that'll stay afloat.
When we arrive we'll all promote romance, romance, romance
