When Mark said "Tom is alone. _Completely_ alone." I thought it was going to be Major Tom (sitting in his tin can, far above the world). Considering the actual Tom it turned out to be, I'd argue that, while the _character_ was indeed alone, Tom was there with a huge crew.
Yup. For the sake of argument though, it still makes sense about alone "in context", as in he does not share the risk of getting hit with other people on set, he was "alone" in the sense that only him is getting dangled by the wire, alone in the experience of the actual stunt.
Mark made me feel old, he's thinking of the 1996 movie when he says "original Mission Impossible", not the 1966 tv series. Not that I saw it that year as I was only two and not American but I did watch it a few years later on a black and white tv (my parents did not get a colour tv till the 70's) dubbed in French (my first language).
Major Tom in space, has magnetic floor, uses metal objects in his shoes to stick to the floor. Mic drop and it is obviously wrong and I can pick up my mic again :)
I hope Mark finds a better microphone next time he comes on. Considering that this podcast is audio-only for the most part, audio quality seems pretty important.
@@MrMartinSchou It's definitely a microphone issue. The microphone on the airpods/airpod pros sound awful. If you ever listen to a friend, or anyone speak to you using the airpods it's so difficult to understand.
That *is* the locally recorded file, through Riverside.fm. We tend to find AirPods don't have great mics - we'll probably ask guests to use their laptop mic in future.
@@ScopeSource AirPods are generally the worst thing you can wear. Gonna take this opportunity to point out that Tom Scott has full actual subtitles on all his videos across several channels and Mark can't be bothered to put them on his one channel that has way more subscribers.
Well to be a bit fairer, Tom doesn't seem to be doing it himself. There's a link to the caption service at the outro, if you have subtitles on. Though they do do a good job.
@@dryued6874 I've mentioned that in comments on Mark's channel. Of course Tom or Mark or similar are not going to do the subtitling themselves but there are many affordable services that do it.
@RobtheMod2 - Wait, knowing that Tom Cruise's films were based on an older TV show counts as being a "pedant" now? You used to have to work hard to be a pedant. Now it seems just having watched some old-ish TV shows is enough. Pedantry really needs to raise its bar.
My mind immediately went to weight distribution but I was thinking about space / zero gravity instead. To be fair, I've never seen any of the mission impossible movies.
The inconsistent microphone quality among everyone is slightly distracting and hard to listen to when it's a long podcast. I'm sure it's tricky to arrange these, but surely guests like ex-NASA Mark Rober have a better mic setup than just using his ear buds ;)
I see no reason not to suspent Tom Scott from a hardness to see what would happen. He could get Matt to help. "Hi! In the movie, Tom Cruise hacks the CIA like this, so I've got a dangle-thingy harness for my friend Tom and an old PC running Windows 98. Let's see how long it takes him to pull up some files."
As someone who has never seen any Mission Impossible movies (and frankly, isn't much interested in doing so): I still don't know what kind of balancing they're talking about 😂
I haven't seen any movies, but I think I've seen what this is about: he's hanging from a wire connected to a harness around his waist, and the weight of the coins is making his bottom half as heavy as his top half, so that he isn't upside down.
The moment he said 'you've all seen this', I got it. To be fair, given the number of videos I have watched about the M:I series, I should have gotten it earlier.
When Tom was hanging from the ceiling in the harness and horizontal, he was probably a little top heavy with his head hanging down too low so they added the coins in his shoes to balance him out like an old style balance scale.
Also, coins in your shoes will allow you to not hit your head on barrier gates by tricking the magnetic sensor into thinking that you're a car. No, they probably won't, but I don't think that technical detail was the reason why they rejected my Mission: Impossible script. Something about lack of excitement and also the fact that there's plenty of space under the gate for Tom Cruise to run through.
Initial thoughts: the ferromagnetic properties of the coins was enough to be detected by sensors to keep a gate raised, or some such (similar to mopeds adding on a big magnet so automated traffic lights get triggered). To remind him, and have cash on hand, to pay for some mechanism (e.g. gates), and/or having to reach down to pay reminds him to stay low and safe?
I've heard many colleagues via €15 headsets sound fine, hence my surprise of people still using such bad mics. Just using one that is somewhat close to your mouth, in stead of in your ear or on your chest, is more than fine.

My mind went to an astronaut situation, too. Didn't think of the song, though, which disappoints me because I'm a big David Bowie fan.
I thought it was a reference to the game Thomas was alone haha
Same, thought about major Tom, and couldnt figure out why heavier shoes would matter in microgravity.
"Tom is a human." "Is it Tom Cruise?"
Don't forget the additional, crucial clue that it's not Tom Scott
I immediately assumed it was Tom from MySpace. He's everyone's friend!
@@robspiess I assumed it was Major Tom from David Bowie's Space Oddity. Don't know why
Tom cruise is a superhuman
I thought Tom Cruise was a Scientological Lizard Person 🤷♂️
I loved this question and I was 100% along for the ride with the guests and their line of questions.
“To prevent hitting his head, Tom put a few UK one pound coins in his shoes. Why?”
Because Tom doesn’t like hitting his head obviously
Damn. Got it in 1. Next show.

Major Tom in space, has magnetic floor, uses metal objects in his shoes to stick to the floor.
Mic drop

Most spaceships do not have magnetic floors. That would cause problems with the various metal objects and electronics in a spaceship.

6:37 - I suspect Tom wasn't even born when "the *original* Mission: Impossible" aired.
How young do you think Tom is???
@RobtheMod2 - Wait, knowing that Tom Cruise's films were based on an older TV show counts as being a "pedant" now?
You used to have to work hard to be a pedant. Now it seems just having watched some old-ish TV shows is enough. Pedantry really needs to raise its bar.
My mind immediately went to weight distribution but I was thinking about space / zero gravity instead. To be fair, I've never seen any of the mission impossible movies.
I was thinking Tom Hanks in Apollo 13
In Space there is still gravity.
In order to achieve 0 gravity you would have ro be in constant free fall like the ISS.
Yeah, I was thinking Major Tom in Space Oddity
I kept thinking "Tom" was in space... even though you're weightless in space 😂
Well, you're weightless, but not massless. The balancing thing may still be a factor in some specific tasks.
0:56 that subtitle threw me off for a minute. its gait not gate
Thanks, now fixed.
It’s weird being the person that knows the answer ahead of time
i was totally thinking "Major Tom" using coins in his shoes, to control his orientation as he traveled through a magnetic field...
The inconsistent microphone quality among everyone is slightly distracting and hard to listen to when it's a long podcast.

i mean earbuds are good. the mic is a potential issue though
@@whatusernameis5295 The implication is that Mark is using the microphone in his earbuds.
This is the 3rd lateral question that I knew from the beginning
Now, if they had shown him do that in character, that would be cool.

Slight error in the subtitles at 0:56 where it should be "gait" not "gate"
Thanks, now fixed.
Haha my head went to Tom and Jerry at the same time as Tom.
I think like Tom does!... My brain went to Tom and Jerry as well before he mentioned it haha
Its strange, my head went in exactly the same directions as Tom's at the exact same time when he thought about Tom and Jerry!
I'm so proud of him
With the mention of the gait recognition cameras I was like I read about this is a sci-fi book, surely it’s not become a reality yet

aaaa figured it out!!
Oh I know this one! I'll sit out 😅
I fail to understand how coins could help in that Situation
When Tom was hanging from the ceiling in the harness and horizontal, he was probably a little top heavy with his head hanging down too low so they added the coins in his shoes to balance him out like an old style balance scale.

"I just thought Tom Cruise was a very balanced man..."
So did all 3 of his ex wives. They were VERY wrong about that.
I think the coins in the shoes are just so Tom doesn’t forget the current amount of cash to rent a helmet at some sort of event/activity
As soon as Mark said ‘yes, it’s Tom Cuise’, that exact scene came to mind. It’s TC’s most famous scene ever - how is that a mic-drop! 😅
I have no idea what scene they're talking about.
my guess was:
The metal will trigger a metal detector, usually this isn't necessary because they wear steel reinforced safety shoes.
Major Tom; I seem to have lost my balance…
Ground control: put some coins in your shoes?
they started talking about tom and i really thought it was going to be tom daley the diver
There was another Tom & Jerry that was a cartoon with two humans named Tom & Jerry from the 1930s.
Ah, yes. The series that had to be renamed for reissue *due* to the cat and mouse duo.
"original mission impossible" it's not wrong but it's not right 😂
My brain went to Tom and Jerry as well
I'm guessing something about a pun with pound
hehehe tom is so goofy i luv him
Aaargh! The # is misaligned behind Mark!
I mean, how else are you supposed to balance when tied at the hip? Especially when a male's center of gravity tends to be higher than the hip.
Grreetings from Poland 🤗
Are we just assuming these a coins with a value of 1 pound Sterling, or do the coins weigh one pound?
I'd say it mattered a lot which small dense item it was. Any other coin weighs a few grams tops but this one is one pound.
i went to tom and jerry too!
Tom cruise, mission impossible.
Stealing something that weighs as much as (a few?) 1£ coin(s) and gets weighed in and out?
That was a great question!
Magnetic
My first thought was that it had something to do with a magnetized floor. Also: Why is Mark Robers sound quality so awful in this one?
Rumour has it Cruise kept all the £1 coins after the shoot.
Glued them to the bottom of his shoes so he could match then wife Nicole Kidman in height!
Ami Yamato: "Damn you, Tom Cruise!!1!one"
dun dun dundun dun dun dundun dun dun dundun tududuuuuuuuu tududuuuuuuuuuu tududuuuuuuuuuuuu tudu
fun fact : F1 driver Sebastian Vettel he like to put a coin in his racing shoes , did that in every single races in his whole racing careers.
Surprised no one said anything about the thumbnail.

3:43 To make noise and scare away nearby wildlife away from him?

In a world that sat at home having online meetings for two year, how do people still use this bad mics.
My headset's mic is sufficient for every conversation I need to have. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
For the same reason that people haven't learned to mute themselves if they're not speaking and have something noisy going on around them.
I've heard many colleagues via €15 headsets sound fine, hence my surprise of people still using such bad mics. Just using one that is somewhat close to your mouth, in stead of in your ear or on your chest, is more than fine.
This is phrased as a riddle, but it isn't because riddles don't required trivia knowledge.
