Yes, they speak the Kelantanese Malay dialect because they are ethnic Malays who long lived in Pattani before Thailand took this province. Before the Siamese (Thai) conquest in 1785, Pattani was part of the much bigger Pattani Kingdom (which had been established in 1475). The Pattani Kingdom now makes up the provinces of Pattani, Satun, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pattani_Kingdom
Of course, I do not condone with the violent methods these Pattani Malay separatists are using to gain independence. Pattani was an independent Malay kingdom and it is culturally related to the Malays in neighbouring Kelantan in Malaysia. Other Thai provinces where the Malays are related to the Kelantanese are Chumphon, Narathiwat, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Satun, Songkhla, Surat Thani, Yala. On the other hand, there are also Malays living in Krabi, Phang Nga, Phuket, Ranong and Trang, which were part of the Kedah sultanate (now Kedah is a Malaysian state).

I'm Thai from the north. I feel ashamed of what my gov. has been doing in the south for decades.
Look at the history in 1909, Thailand annexed part of the Malay sultanate by the blessing of the British under the Anglo-Siamese Treaty. To bring a long last peace, my gov should respect the identities of the rightful owners who had been living there before a policy to dilute the Malay people with Thai from elsewhere began (up to now, it has been a complete failure as those Thai settlers fled for their life and moved to other parts of the country.).
    1. Recognise Bahasa Pattani as a co-official language used in the south2. Stop forcing Thai identities on the Malay people (we can't covert them to Thai, but we can accept them who they are.)
    3. Set up Sharia courts with jurisdiction over the deep south

It's always nice when people leave comments on a video, where clearly that video appears to have been the full extent of their research on the topic covered and it then allows them express their now clear expert level opinions and bigotry towards their favoured group that they hate. Pattani was a separate state, a Kingdom, at most you could say it was a vassal state that paid tribute to the Thai monarch but it wasn't technically ever part of Thailand, so to read in the comments about Muslims moving to Thailand is laughably ignorant, a deal was made between the Thai monarchy and the British colonial government of Malaya to divide the Kingdom of Pattani up between themselves without any consultation with the local populace, Malay Muslims were given no choice as to whether they wanted to be Thai citizens or not, and that is very much a large part of the issue. The history in the south isn't one of non-stop violence, there have been periods where the Thai government was far more conciliatory to the Malay Muslims and things were fine, however these periods of peace have been interrupted by periods of extreme repression and withdrawal of even most basic of human rights which obviously led to new periods of violence, the latest being caused by the heavy handed measures of the Thaksin government culminating in the Tak Bai massacre of 2004, which presently no Thai Military men have ever been punished for, which may prompt more unfortunate and extreme consequences.
