  • Find what matters and improve your clarity of thought with hierarchies. To find what really matters is not so easy, because it requires determining importance. Creating hierarchies can help because it acts as a focus to guide our thinking. Here I share with you why finding what matters is important and how building hierarchies can help us.

    CLARIFICATION: By "hierarchy" I mean "ranking" or "prioritisation". As in "command hierarchy" (which ranks military ranks from least to most authority), "Maslow's hierarchy of needs" (which ranks human needs from most to least basic) or "sonority hierarchy" (which ranks sounds of a language from most to least sonorant).
    It seems many people understand "hierarchy" to mean "nested grouping" or "taxonomy". I wasn't aware of that, apologies for the confusion. I'll try to avoid using "hierarchy" in the future.

    Though you don't go into music with much depth in the few videos I've seen on your channel so far, I'm very glad that I've come across your videos as they're striking epiphany in a lot of areas that I've been having trouble comprehending and articulating properly within the subject. It's strange how some things just seem to correlate in this existence.

      That's great to hear! Yeah, fundamentally, a lot of mental processes are shared over a larger number of areas, so it makes sense that some tools can be used in a variety of situations (others are more restricted, though). What did my videos help you with specifically?

    Again a very interesting and well-done video. This type of subject should be taught in school and at an early age. Imagine if we were taught to think using logic and methods such as this rather than being taught what to think. Teach me how to think, not what to think

    • @bf-thinking
      @bf-thinking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes and no... While I think it's important to learn how to think, you can't think about nothing. That's why many courses that teach thinking or brainstorming techniques use boring examples, because they need to use something that everybody is familiar with.
      School has one huge advantage: they already have subjects with content to think about. So, you could use the normal school subjects to train your thinking skills and at the same time by doing this you'd learn and understand the subjects better... a win-win situation!

    What topics are you working on that would benefit from creating hierarchies?

    • @JacobChencha

      Right now I am thinking what metrics matter for our core products. I like where you highlight the fact that in retrospect the good decisions se so obvious.
      Another application I can think of is meeting notes. As I try to wean myself of the behavior of basically being a stenographer one of the things I have to contend with is what piece of information is worth saving and what can be safely forgotten. I plan on trying out this ranking method see if it helps.
      As usual thanks for the great content you are putting out. Really helping me out

    • @bf-thinking
      @bf-thinking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JacobChencha Your ideas sound awesome! Good luck with that.
      There are way too many metrics collected simply because they're convenient to collect, not because they actually tell us what we want to know.
      And knowing what details in meetings are worth recording not only can lead to more streamlined note-taking, but potentially to more focussed meetings as well (because you don't need to belabour a point that's not important).

      Hierarchies are a good start but imposing structure on the world does not always work out. There'll always be unknown unknowns and black swans along your way. There're a few good points described in Gall's Law, Programming principles (KISS+DRY+YAGNI and other patterns) and some ideas from Machine learning research. Plus Andy Matuschak mentiones a few important points in his notes on Ontologies vs Taxtonomies and Why collaborative note taking tends to decay (it also applies to re-using hierarchies made by others in your work). I think what matters more is scaleability, robustness of your models, iteration speed and rapidly testing validity of your metrics by experiment via real world data and opportunity cost

    • @bf-thinking
      @bf-thinking  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@realitycat9045 Just to clarify: by"hierarchy" I mean a ranking or prioritisation (as in Maslow's hierarchy of needs or the sonority hierarchy). I don't mean nested grouping.
      Secondly, you have some good points, but that doesn't mean that ranking or grouping is useless or just useful as a "starting point" (though it can be). It's just one more tool in your toolbox. Wether a tool is useful or not depends on the topic / problem / question you tackle.
      And don't forget that you can combine tools. I used the example of COVID measures. You can use systems analysis tools (such as causal loop diagrams, Vester's sensitivity analysis, or one of several system simulation techniques) to assess the impact of changes to various components of the system. And you can use these results to then rank them acc. to several criteria (this IS a data reduction step and you lose some information, but you gain some clarity in the process - whether that's useful depends on context).

    By hierarchy do you mean prioritization?

    • @bf-thinking

      Yes, by "hierarchy" I mean prioritisation or ranking (such as a league table, university rankings, sonority hierarchy, chain of command etc.).
