I sat up and played all night with the Rev. after a concert, I was a concert promoter for the Seattle Folklore Society and got to meet all the great bluesmen, for which I feel eternally blessed. If you like the Rev. there's all kinds of stuff on youtube. He was a moving and powerful performer, just as down to earth as an old shoe.

What strikes me about these old black bluesmen apart from there amazing music is they've got style and they are some of the coolest muthers to walk the earth they just ooze laidbackness
Davis admired Blake and rightfully so. Blake was a bit older than Davis and already famous, when Davis started performing. Davis always said he learned the most from Blake and his "sporting right hand"

When I decided to learn guitar 30 years ago, a Stefan Grosman tab book by the Reverend Gary Davis was all they had in the library by way of tuition. In an interview Stefan asked him why he only played with his thumb and forefinger and not his other fingers and Davis said something along the lines of, that's all you need, the others get in the way. I thought that sounded pretty logical and 30 years on I still agree with him. I can't recall anyone else just using the thumb and forefinger only, so basically that interview shaped the whole of my playing during that time. Great to see him in this, one of his best. :)
