No, no, no, Daemon doesn’t look at the crown with want, he looks at it with grief. The fact that he is holding the crown is just this reminder that his brother is dead. Daemon wants the throne to stay Targaryen, and he wants Targaryens to stay as pure as possible. He hates Otto and the Hightowers. He resents Viserys for not allowing him to protect him from the likes of Otto. When Rhaenyra starts emulating Viserys, he gets frustrated and snaps, he knows that with the greens diplomacy won’t work.

22:28 I do think it is not only about softening the characters, but at the end, the books are written from the perspective of the different authors writing their historical testimonies, which with the known beef between Aemond and Lucerys, and Almond's known character and threats, makes sense that they would write in his intention of killing rather than it to be an accident.

I agree. I believe the showrunners alluded to this and said they were trying to find the truth because they knew it was men who wrote the potential viewpoints of how things went down, so there was inherent bias both toward Alicent and toward Rhaenyra in how it was written.

    • @linaikrimadina
      @linaikrimadina 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Alright, let's say Aemond has no intention to kill Lucerys. So what's his plan? Cut out his eye for revenge? Do you honestly think that would make it better than outright killing him? The writer always make changes from the book and that's okey, but sometime it didn't make any sense. So this war started because of misunderstanding by Allicent and accident by Aemond? How very weird and shallow.

There are even instances where you go as far as to feel sorry for some of the "bad guys"

I just noticed something from watching an old clip. During the meeting between Daemon and Otto, Daemon responds to Otto's offer with violence and offering to 'end this mummer's farce'. Otto used this same term when he came to reclaim the dragon's egg on the same ledge. Daemon asked where the king was and he responded with 'His Grace would never lower himself to entertain such a mummer's farce'. When Aemon’s dragon starts getting a bit much, Aemon forgets to speak to it in High Valerian, and (in his panic?) starts trying to order his big fella in Common. If this was deliberate, it’s a really clever and subtle way of helping to convey Aemon’s state-of-mind.

Especially a noble Dragon such as Vermithor. One of my favorite scenes from the entire season. When they first brought this prequel to light, I thought there was no chance it could compare to it's parent series. Boy, was I wrong. So far, it's panning out to b it's equal. i think the struggling to control the dragons thing is more nuanced and less about humanizing the violent actions and more about showing that they arent gods. they dont have perfect control of this power, even though they may act like it. although, i do think some of them are better than others (rhaenyra and daemon particularly). could be that the more diluted targaryen blood yields imperfect results.

This « softening » of the characters is great because it also puts into perspective the unreliable sources of those who wrote the dance of dragons in universe. To them the targaryens are god-like and most likely more evil, anyone would think of this that Aemond massacred his nephew willfully finding the remains of the boy and the small dragon and knowing Vhagar’s size, anyone could spread rumors of caved out eyes on the boy’s body, and a rumor that gets traction easily became a fact in times like this. Throughout our history, History was written by unreliable sources so it’s fun to see this added realism.

I agree, the point of Fire & Blood, is that the Westorosi maesters will take events and make bad guys and good guys, like they would do with Daenerys or Ned Stark not knowing the details we know.
It would not surprise me if GRRM told the writers it happened this way, a tragic accident because the dragons cannot be fully control, which is established even in the original novels, it honestly sounds like something he would write.

One thing to note as well is that Aemon is trying to control Vhagar using the common tongue and not Valyrian. I may be reading too much into it, but that could be a subtle yet telling insight into the Hightowers trying to erase the Targaryen lineage from the crown and hold all the power.

The dragons are politically the equivalent of nuclear weapons, only even more chaotic. They can decide the balance of a battle but they are intensely dangerous to their users as well as their targets.
I am just jazzed that we have a real fantasy series that does dragons right, after decades of bad attempts. You really feel the majesty of these things, and the sense of humans barely controlling a wild force of nature.

The rain in Jurassic Park really helped make the Tyrannosaurus reveal look better. The CGI was a bit glossy at that time to the point where the dinosaurs almost had a “wet“ appearance. First revealing the tyrannosaur in the rain just made it look better in general. It doesn’t look quite as good later in the film in full daylight. It still looks amazing but the rain helped conceal the glossy look of the CGI. There were a few shots of the raptors in the kitchen that also suffered from the glossy wet look particularly because they were close shots, but they were very quick shots backed up with amazing animatronics. I love how you always reference other great films, probably my favorite thing about your channel.

I think the writers made the dragon fight more of an accident where as in the books it was murder because if you think about it, the maesters would want Targaryens to seem ruthless and savage killing whomever without caring but is it obvious that it was just an accident. Secondly Aemond would never fess up to it being an accident anyway as it would make him appear weak and like his doesn't control Vhagar revealing (like Viserys said) that it's all an illusion to the world making the Targaryens overall seem less threatening.

As the person committing the accident he might not think that, but if you think about receiving the accident, it's not as easy to say "oh he was just defending himself".
After not seeing Aemond for years, the first time Luke sees Aemond is him besting Criston Cole, and then giving Luke an angry look. Why doesn't Luke understand that Aemond is dangerous and that he still holds a grudge. The last time he saw him, yes Aemond told his mom "do not mourn me mother, I have lost an eye but I gained a dragon", maybe Luke thinks Aemond has forgiven. But after the courtyard scene, he should see that is not the case.
I have met people who were disabled in accidents, the reason I met them is they were going to therapy. One of them became alcoholic and was attending a court mandated DUI counseling group. Becoming disabled from an accident basically emotional trauma, trauma that is so bad that many people become depressed, they are not themselves anymore.
Have you met people who lost a body part after an accident?
When my dog became blind, the vet told me "don't worry, they don't become depressed like humans do".
To someone who wants to ride a dragon, which Aemond has clearly wanted from a young age, losing an eye is a severe disadvantage. Aemond later trained to sword fight, once again, can you imagine having to learn how to fight while missing an eye. Every day he trained he probably thought, "if Luke had not retaliated, or if Luke had just missed my eye and only cut my face, my life would be different"
He wears a sapphire in his eye socket, which is cool, but it doesn't make up for the loss of an eye. Human beings rely on 3d sight a lot. I guess Aemond just adapted to it, but an eye is not something you just get used to missing. It's not a hidden disability. It's on his face.
I know someone who had their foot amputated, as well as someone who had their entire leg amputated, and it's not as noticeable because it's not on their face.

A bit late but just incase, I think the screen when Lucke's dragon took him up high above the storm, and then an open beautiful sky appeared is also the reference for the last conversation with their mother "we are closer to gods than to men". The moment that poor boy brave himself up and flight, those uncontrollable beast rose him up to be amazed by the sight of a god.. and then because of that, to be pushed down immediately by another ones. Poor that summer boy..
