    I appreciate the honesty and forthrightness of your reviews. And, once again, good for you for having the courage to review products that so-called “audiophiles” would never dare to even mention in public. You are doing a terrific service for those who may just be beginning to discover vinyl records. Keep it up!

    Regarding the tone arm - it just takes a screw driver and 5 seconds kf elbow grease. You just have to loosen the screw in the "ball" joint which holds the tone arm - you can see it in the side of the arm. Just loosen it a liiiitle bit and it will move more freely and let you set the counterweight just right. Hope that helps. It makes this good record player a great one.

    1.5 grams is way too light for the Audio-Technica AT3600L cartridge it comes with. Its recommended minimum tracking force is 2.5 grams.

    • @stevesstuff1450
      @stevesstuff1450 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Trekkie4 : With the AT3600 cartridge, it depends on which stylus is chosen by the turntable manufacturer; if you buy an AT-LP60, then it tracks at aprox 3.5gms (carbonfibre/plastic cantilever), yet if you buy a Rega RP1/ P1/ P2 then it comes with a version called Rega Carbon that is factory preset at 1.75gms (carbonfibre/plastic cantilever).
      If you get an AT-LP3 then you have another version of the 3600 cartridge but now with an aluminium cantilever that tracks at 2gms.
      If you buy the cartridge seperately, then once again tracking force can vary between 1.75 to 3.5gms....it's all down to the supplied stylus, and the different 'compliance' on the cantilevers: low compliance (stiff) for heavier tracking, and higher compliance (looser/springy) for lighter tracking forces..... all designed for different mass tonearms, and to ensure wide compatibility and good performance in most applications!

      Hmmm. not everyone seems to read the manual...
      The manual recommends 2.5g to 3.5g tracking force and leaving anti-skate on minimum.
      I'm currently on 3g, anti-skate on minimum. With these settings, I have yet to see a record skip.
      I will try to increase tracking force to 3.5g, may help with bass? Compared to my Pro-Ject TT with Ortofon cartridge, the Marley has less bass.

    Thank you for your honest appraisal of the ‘stir it up’. You just about nailed it and I concur with others. The tone arm counterweight setting is far too light and tone arm nigh impossible to float. This was a present given to me and I feel bad about criticising it ... out of the box it’s beautiful, to use with good quality sound not so clever.

    I second the comments re the tracking force. 1.5 grams is only possible with high end cartridges on really good tone arms. When you are dealing with cheap arms with dubious pivots and bearings and low end cardtridges, i would be sticking to the higher end of the tracking force range. Minimum 3.5 grams, but I would probably go for four in this case. People are so concerned with ruining their records by high tracking force, but really with cheap equipment you are much more likely to damage the record with too low a tracking force. If the cartridge begins to float without enough downforce, the stylus will begin to slap around in the top part of the groove, and that will likely do far more damage.

    The "teeth" on the bottom of the platter is part of a servo speed control circuit.-the teeth are counted by the photo device that the teeth go thru .Interesting a servo speed control is on a TT this inexpensive.

    I'm not sure if these new turntables can hold the stains of time. I can only share my experience and I'm going on 6 years with the Audio Technica LP120 and still looks, feels and sounds just like the very first time I received it. I replaced the cartridge with the Turbo MC-1 Ortofon, Klipsch RP600 speakers, Onkyo receiver and a MANI preamp. The sky is the limit and thus far the best set up quality I ever had.

  • @pcallas66
    @pcallas66 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The thing you should do is have a stylus scale and compare the readings between the counterweight and scale. The thing is there could be a limitation in the built in preamp as well. I would try and put it through a receiver with a different preamp in it and see if you hear the difference. It doesn't look like there's a ground wire on the turntable itself for the receivers that have a ground terminal. I'm not sure if it would hum or buzz if the wire isn't attached through the receiver through the phono input. It seems like the treble is rolled off a little bit. I'm wondering if they did that to mask some of the scratchy sounds if your record is scratchy. Although I'm doubtful it is the cartridge, that would be my next guess. You have a good insight on how turntables work for sure and this does look like a better one made in this era. I'm still a big fan of the old school turntables. Personally, I prefer direct drive. They came a long way with those. I know the belt is supposed to isolate the noise between the platter and motor, which it does great, but the direct drive according to my ears does as equally a great job. I like the fact that you don't have to change the speed with your fingers moving the belt on a pulley. I do think that the speed switch could have probably used a little bit less of a rotation on the switch itself. I'm thinking between speeds it would probably come to a stop until you got to the next position. It does snap really well, though. Keep up the good work.

  • @skoidat

    I own one. It isn't the worst and I love it for all the reason stated in the video, but there are some really big problems. The design of the tone arm makes it nearly impossible to make it "float", the platter is way too wobbly, the anti-skate knob doesn't work as stated in the video; if you want an LP to play through then you're going to have to put the anti-skate 1/2 of what your tracking force is, there is NO speed calibration anywhere that I can see on the device; so hopefully when the time comes for me to calibrate there will be some controls on the inside; though I don't know how I'm going to actually measure the speed at that point, and the quality control is horrible, I'm on my second one and I'm thinking about turning it in for another; because each time that I've gotten one I've been met with a new and unique problem.

    I read several reviews from buyers who purchased this turntable from Amazon. Like you, they did not give it good reviews. This is unusual for a turntable that appears to be high quality right out of the box. Those responsible for the design and manufacturing failed in some way to get it right. Perhaps they could find this turntables failures and make a good product the second time around.

    I would love to see a review on the newer version of this with Bluetooth, if you can get your hands on one! I love what House of Marley stands for in terms of the environment, but I don't want to waste my money either if the sound quality just isn't there. I'm super confused as to which turntable to buy I would like to keep speakers and all under $400 which is not always easy. Your reviews have been helpful and right now I'm leaning towards the Crosley C62- unsure due to the lack of the anti-skate mechanism- or the U Orbit which would most likely end up exceeding my budget by a lot after purchasing speakers. I've been seeing lots of talk about the fluance turntables.

    I noticed another problem: it doesn't have a 78 speed. It's very hard to find a turntable brand new with 78 speed and a magnetic cartridge, as well as auto return.

    • @xaenon
      @xaenon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, the general attitude now is that you can play a 78 record at 33 or 45 speed, digitize the sound, and correct the speed in software. And, honestly, if you want the best possible sound out of a 78, you'll need to digitize it anyway since those old 78s have different EQ curves than modern vinyl, PLUS generally you want to run filters to reduce or eliminate hiss, pops, etc.
      For 78s and 16s, I keep an old BSR C141 autochanger around. Yes, I know audiophiles hate these things, but if you think about it, the typical early 1970s BSR 4-speed is actually superior to the players that were in use when 78s were in general circulation. I converted mine to a magnetic cartridge (the best way to do this is to find a model with the 'wide' head shell. Mine was used in a Panasonic stereo and had provisions for a standard 1/2 inch cartridge mount.

    • @Hogstuff

      My new SL-1200 MK7 has 78 rpm capabilities. The new MK7 has dip switches under the platter to enable 78 rpm, reverse play, torque/break adjust, and you can change the light color. Although for 1/4 the price you can get an LP-120x ( they fixed the anti skate problem on the old LP-120s and came out with the LP-120x) and have all of those features you want while still retaining some relative quality.

  • @7JANEWAY
    @7JANEWAY 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    One reason you're not getting top quality sound from this turntable is that it has an AT 3600 cart/stylus--which is one of Audio Technica's rock bottom carts (it's even lower on the food chain than the 95e). Can you upgrade it to a better cart/stylus combo? I know from experience that upgrading will improve the sound significantly. I have an AT 120 USB, and when I upgraded the cart/stylus to an Ortofon 2m Red from the stock AT 95e, it made a world of difference.
    It would seem that an upgrade could be one way you can get better sound from this TT.

Marley (with speakers) is 200$ more expensive, it has anti skating but it has fabric cover. Did you like Marley’s fabric cover? Do you think that it is effective? It did not play the record. It turned, but only a tiny, faint sound in the distance. Do I have to hook it up to an amp? I'm trying to find a turntable that just plays a record.

    It is a cool looking turntable it looks to be mostly quality if you change the stylus out on it would that make an improvement go with like an order foam to mrad or something if you can buy one for you can make one work on that turntable looks like a half inch headshell

      Have been a hifi enthusiast for nearly 50yrs. i can advise you DON'T BUY IT! The 17year old son of a good friend of mine
      bought this, it put him off vinyl, untill i turned up, and said it is not a fault with the records, the arm movement was so
      stiff in both side to side and up and down movement, that all his newly bought records would not play all the way through,
      also when switching on it put a thud sound into the speakers, this is bad circuit design that can damage the speakers!
      "How much was this, £60, (uk pounds)" he said no £180, this was 2yrs.+ ago, i was horrified, luckily he only had it a week
      and got his money back, and for only £40 more got a MUCH MUCH better Audio Technica LP120 for £220.
      The end comments on this vid are spot on. This is a grossly over priced turntable, and in over 2yrs. they still seem to
      suffer the same problems, what does that say about their quality, products like this will put people off buying vinyl, so
      please don't get sucked in by the marketing rubbish. He now must have approaching 100 albums, his faith in vinyl
      restored. hope you get this before you spend you're money, The Audio Technica LP60 is also much better than
      the Marley.

    Google "stir it up turntable stylus" to read about the garbage stylus before buying, in my case I got about a month out of it. Customer service strings you along but ultimately doesn't do anything. Basic rip-off.

    I've found that setting the weight to 2.5 and setting the anti-skate to 2.5 doesn't work. As it gets closer to the centre of the record, it sticks. I adjusted the anti-skate to 2.0 to allow the stylus to continue to the end of the record. Anyone else have the same issue - should they match perfectly?

    Late in the day I know but I think that you need to re-define your definition of "high end", to me the unit looks perfectly respectable for the very low cost but "high end, no. By the way the main bearing looks like most of the main bearings on many turntables that I've had in the past, nothing unique about it. Sorry for negativity.

    Absolute rubbish, got sucked into the half price sale - should have played some older records instead of destroying the grooves on my new Saucerful of Secrets Album. Can't even play a full side without jumping or staying in the same groove despite all the stuffing around with the tracking - straight into the non recyclable bin with this one.
