    She did a great job. I really felt bad for Shelby when her backstory came out.

      Her character went full circle. She did an amazing job. Starting with the good Christian front in the beginning to the way she first snapped when they were eating mussels to how she looks at Tori before a kiss. And the look on her face when she was around her dad. Those little moments made her unexpectedly one of my favorite characters.

      @@adriennecarrasco37 i liked Shelby but I feel like the movie just was saying that Christians should be fucked and that we are rude and too nice. It’s like they want people to stop being a religion

      @@hopevity I grew up with Christian family members who were a lot like Shelby in the beginning, and the kids around us were the same. I found her character to be pretty relatable. I wouldn't say shes a hypocrite, nor my family, but she was just raised a certain way, believed it and learned that not all of what she was told is right or is bad.

      @@hopevity I don't feel it's promoted. A lot of people go through things like this, and it's not even just the gay situation. I probably wouldn't have put distance between myself amd religion if I didn't have people like Shelby in the beginning and her dad around. I still remain a spiritual person but I know a handful of people who have fully given up. It's sad but there is a lot of hypocrisy that gives Christians a negative look. It all comes from within, not the outsiders.

    She did an incredible job! Her facial expressions and the subtle changes when her character was struggling with her secrets, just amazing. She’s gonna have a great career!

      @dloaded so true, she did an amazing job. In addition to that I've noticed that she kinda put little hints in her acting for example she looked (twice) at Toni's lips when they were arguing/fighting at the beach (when Toni said something like "you aren't that cute christian unicorn.... and i see who u really are/what u are hinding") Or in the episode after the plane appeared and the girls were imagining their interview after they have been rescued. Fatin said the first thing she wanted to do is to find a guy and have sex with him (her actuall words were a little bit more aggressive ^^), Shelby looked so disgusted and uncomfortable in the background. I think those little details really made Mia's acting so phenomenal. (Especially for me, bc i like to look at the characters in the backround, when the attention is on another character and the camera isnt focused on them, if they stay in character and continue acting naturally)

    Really enjoyed the series! I do want 2 say as an older female, but relating too all these issues, sex, religion, parents, expectations etc. We all went thru this and universally regardless of the time (I grew up in the 80's) we still have all of those feelings. I do see the differences in the different times, and today (growing pains) are a lot more magnified with social media. So maybe this comment isn't going to come off very well. But we did Not have help or openness, we didn't relate or talk about our issues as much when I was growing up. All of these things happened to girls while I was growing up but we didn't Focus on it, we didn't talk about it.. as much as it seems to be so important today, to focus on it, task about it, bring it to the surface. We just moved on and thru it as best as we could. You had to self preserve and it definitely made (in my particular case) me stronger as I grew and evolved into different parts and aspects of my life. My parents didn't coddle or 'try' to figure out "why" i was the way I was (i ran away, i was extremely dramatic and probably very difficult 4 a working mom back then) we simply moved on. And from having different friends thru out my life no matter what anyone's situation, I have since learned; whether u have the most supportive parents, or the worst parents or NO parents etc... one thing I've found as I get older and have had many many female friends throughout my lifetime, every single one, after being in the 🌎 for a time and reflection starts as you start to see WHO they are out who you really are, when you start to reflect, Everyone, no matter their up bringing and parents, always brings it back to how they were raised and who their parents were or were not. I think it's more damaging to focus on it too much (issues growing up) bc it gives excuses in some instances (not all) but bc as you get older, there are some years in your life you will appreciate the rough times in your life when people Didn't help or understand you and then there will be times as you go thru life where you will see that particular time in your life where ppl understanding u while growing up would have helped..... there is NO magic "growing up in this world" magic book.... thee most important part i see; NO MATTER what your individual situation is, it's what U do with it and how U go forward, how you, now as your Individual, and how YOU view and act.... we learn to (hopefully) as we get older to "act" ... when our whole young lives we only knew how to "react"

She will need the same type of dental work and I had to show her this show to show her what it will be like when she’s a little older. I am now 32 years old, I had the implants (finally!) at 25 years old once my jaw was fully grown. Very expensive in Australia but so worth it. It was a huge part of my life growing up and a big blow to my confidence. Goodluck to your daughter. There's light at the end of the tunnel.

But yah o thought it was cool to see it represented on tv. We still haven’t decided on moving her teeth forward with braces or doing the denture til she can get the implant. She’s 12 and still has quite a few baby teeth. But I showed her this so she would know what that option would look like. Dental work is pretty expensive in the US too but I told her no matter what age, if she wants them, I’ll pay. I don’t want to put the financial part on her.

      @allycollings8021 3 ปีที่แล้ว +90

      Have you never read Lord of the Flies? Boys are even likely to turn to savagery, not productivity. This series shows how women function--they are emotional. They let their feelings come out instead of just becoming angry, they dive deeper naturally. Men are less likely to do that, men react to their anger with just that, anger. Men are statistically more violent and in LotF actual group murder takes place. So no, focusing on the boys isn't going to show productivity and togetherness. Also, did you even watch the show?? It has so many themes of hierarchy and patriarchy. In this show they are productive, their "drama" is trama. Not high school bs. I mean they were able to ration, assign jobs, bring sickly people to health. I mean come on, boys are more productive? Pish Posh.

And have hunted and gathered food for a week or so on the next day. And the show wasn’t actually about matriarchy and patriarchy. It was about social pressure, and how different society would be without the pressure of norms and expectations. How different things would be if people were able to just live. And a book written about society 66 years ago. That was wrote during wartime and published after it, isn’t exactly what our society is now. And if you believe woman can be completely peaceful without social pressure, I believe guys can as well. Guys deal with trama also, it’s not less difficult and it’s not more difficult trama. Guys have different kinds of social pressure and again they are t any more or less difficult to deal with.

      @@cupam_primus6269 No. Go read about the Stanford Prison Experiment. Then see how you feel about "peace" men display during high-intensity situations. Can't use the excuse that "that was a long time ago" humans rarely deviate from habitual actions we have displayed for a millennium. If you want to watch something about boys in the wild go watch Naked and Afraid. Or literally anything else on TV, it's all about men anyway, let the ladies have something. I am also going to leave this here. Not wasting my college degree on someone who doesn't understand allegories or socioeconomic pressures. Also, the past tense of write is written--not wrote.

      @@cupam_primus6269 The point of the show is to bring light to a female's perspective. Most shows are mainly composed of men with maybe a female as the romance character. The Wilds not only show the social problems women have with each other, but it also talks about how they work together to overcome situations that people do not expect them to handle. The show is based on social inequality between men and women and additionally highlights the LGBTQ+ community as well. The fact that you automatically assume that guys would immediately build shelter proves the point of what this show is trying to say... people always compare a "stronger" group as if it even existed. Guys would go through their own personal problems on the island too. You are literally proving the point of this toxic boundary between males and females.

      It's a defense mechanism many people pleasers use in real life. It's totally believable. She has to pretend to be happy to maintain the peace in a family like hers. If she expresses displeasure or disapproval, or tries to rebel against her father, he will ruin her life. He is not just manipulative and controlling, there is a hint of violence beneath the surface too. No one dares to question him, including his wife. Shelby doesn't have a choice but to turn herself into the kind of perfect girl he wants her to be. The fake happy-go-lucky attitude is part of the pageant world too, which she has been forced to participate in since childhood. The optimism, cheerfulness and kindness is how you get people to like you. These are traits that Shelby does have, but she exaggerates them to cover up for the ones which might be considered "darker" or "unacceptable". Shelby's character is full of contradictions because if she lets herself feel all her true feelings, she will not be able to survive her life back in Texas. Her soul will disintegrate from all the trauma. She is highly repressed in every way possible. Hence, the disassociative tendencies. That's why it takes so long for her to start revealing her true self even when there's no one around to judge her. You can see that it freaks her out when Toni tells her that she sees who she really is under her mask. Toni is the opposite of who Shelby is.. the perfect foil. She doesn't care about any of Shelby's perceived imperfections. For the first time, it makes Shelby feel free to be her true self. I think the writing and acting is freaking amazing and it gave real depth to the character. Many queer white conservative Americans who were brought up in a homophobic, ultra-religious environment will find her character quite relatable. It shows how harmful an unaccepting family can be to the psyche of a child.
