My month of night float as an intern was by far the most difficult in my entire medical training journey. I left that month in a pretty deep depression. Trust me, you are doing great man. Keep putting 1 foot in front of the other, taking care of yourself first, and before you know it you’ll be putting intern year behind you and will gain massive experience and confidence.
You’re doin great Andy. This is all very familiar, but I promise your capacity to withstand all this nonsense gets greater. Then it “gets better” 😉😂😂😂😂😂🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 you already know my internal sentiments. Love you guy.
Yes, do not worry about not being able to upload videos all the time. Priorities, man. Rest, whatever you have to do! While I'm not taking a career in medicine, I've been researching doctors, cops, marines, and others of The Not ALL Fun Jobs to learn firsthand what they have to deal with. Thank you for sharing your journey with us, because it helps me understand better what you have to tread water through. You're appreciated!
Strong work. For nights, I found going to nurses taking care of your sickest patients is a good way of reducing pages and developing good teamwork. That reduces pages. Even rounding on your list and seeing nurses reduces pages. For upset patients, always reaffirm their fraustration, listen, and give an honest plan. You can't always win, but it'll reduce nurse fraustrations. If nurses are fraustrated, always reaffirm their fraustration before giving your perspective. It helps reduce hammer paging and feeling ignored by residents. The more you move around at night, the faster it goes. Make sure to do workouts before work on nights; sometimes the sauna is the quickest way to refresh. Nights are a good time to do studying and reading too. A good night is whenever no one dies, gets hurt, or any drama happens. It's a great feeling when you get a a sick patient through the night for the day team. I've always appreciated good night team care because days become easier. If you do a good job, patient's will always remember you as the night doctor they trust. If you get the angry family situation, always use the patient emergency to get out. Sometimes, families will never let you leave unless you do so first. It's a sad reality, but it does happen. The more you make nights like days, the more you'll find patients appreciate your care. There's a lot of BS in the system. The truth is that residency isn't about being fair. Again, it's not right, but it's a reality I've learned as a PGY2. What you can do is take care of business and make sure in your heart you know that no one was hurt because you got complacent or lazy. My favorite moments is doing a good job overnight and standing out as a resident that didn't do BS work or wasted time. Your reputation will help other people do some extra favors to help you out. What goes around, comes around. Make sure it's always good.
there's definitely an art to night shifts. been already using some of those tactics from the very first weeks of residency when i was covering surgery floors at night.
Praying for you Andy! You are strong and courageous. So proud of all you do. Don’t apologize for anything. Your health and rest is more important. We aren’t going anywhere. Supporting you through it all! Just know how many lives you are touching. You inspire me always.
I just started med school at the MCG Athens campus. Before that I worked in an ER so I can really relate to this video. Your videos really inspired me! One of my facilitators told me "never question your decision to become a doctor during residency right after you wake up. It's a trap." I guess you're going through that now. I'm sure you'll get through it like everything else. You're a literal doctor now so take some solace in that fact.
That's super true. Jw, I'm starting at Athens campus next summer as well and wondering what your class schedule is like? Like how often do you have to be at school in person? TIA!
Being in the medical professions you'd think they would care more about mental and physical health. It should be a thing. Sometimes the line gets blurred between "paying your dues" as an intern, and unsafe, unsustainable employment practices. Stay strong, sir. Good videos.
You are absolutely crushing Dr. Andy! Keep it pushing! you have motivated us for years and now its time for us to give back! You are more than capable of doing this! we all believe in you!
You're such an insipration to me man. I am currently a freshman pre-med and your videos give me so much motivation. The cinematography and editing is this video are also top notch! Please keep it up!!
Hey Andy, I hope you're doing well. Make sure to listen to your body and get the well deserved rest you need! I am also in the same boat as I currently just started my first night job as a nurse in the ER, and I must agree that trying to sleep at 0830 and wanting to sleep 8 hours is such a challenge. It can be hard and lonely at times, but just remember your 'why'. God bless and take care!
omg ED nurses are some of the best people ever, i've had friends who tell me the joys (and entertaining horror) of nights in the ED and i cannot express how thankful i am for you guys. try to take care of yourself too and hopefully they give you enough time to switch back to days if you have to
As a nurse for over 30 yrs, there are so many good and rewarding aspects of what you do. Persevere through the rough times because it will get better. My daughter is in her 3rd yr MS and hoping to go into anesthesia after having worked as a BSN for 4 yrs. I found your videos after she started her 1st yr and got her following you. Your videos inspire, motivate, and are very informative. I’m sure your parents are very proud of you! Take care of yourself and happy belated birthday.
Happy Birthday. Not the best way to celebrate but just know you are doing great! Hang in there your dream days of Anesthesiology are coming until then just keep being the great Andy that you are.
Happy belated birthday to you! We are always with you along your journey. One of the hardest thing is to make the best decisions for the patients when we are totally sleep-deprived and tired. Proud of you and take good care of your health too. 🍀
Oy! After all these years of vids from med school, this one was brutal. Andy, I'm so sorry that you experience this degree of fatigue. You do note being able to deal as the doctor you are with cases that might, previously, have felt much more challenging. You're growing in your role. Get some sleep. Blessings and prayers.
Senior year nursing student here going through the thick of it. Super fan of your content and the perspective you provide to other healthcare professionals & the general public. Happy birthday and please take care of yourself & your career first. Here's a little gift quote from Kobe Bryant: "Those times when you get up early and you work hard, those times when you stay up late and you work hard, those times when you don't feel like working, you're too tired, you don't want to push yourself, but you do it anyway. That is actually the dream. That's the dream. It's not the destination, it's the journey".
i literally have that kobe quote saved on my phone :), thank you so much for your kind words and hope you are just as kind to the residents once you graduate as the nurses here have been to me
Would know a total knee anywhere, LOL! Hard to keep up your wellbeing in residency but glad to see you being vulnerable and trying your best. That’s really all you can do.
I feel ya, night shift is pure torture!! At least you can hopefully sleep a bit, as a nurse you are awake and on all night long, and you have to actually to physical labor and be able to think clearly for 12 solid hours. I will NEVER work nights again as a nurse!!! You will get through it (mainly because you have to) , eat healthy (that will help) and try and find a routine for when you are on night for getting sleep during the day! Happy Birthday as well!
omg the amount of times i apologized to the night nurses on behalf of some of the patients being so rude to them made me feel terrible. they were always so understanding and comforting to me even when i got frustrated. so so thankful for the amazing night nurses but yeah i completely understand why ya'll would prefer days
@@NDMD Thanks for being so nice to nurses!! We are in fact the "punching bags" for patients and anyone else frustrated in the hospital, which is why most nurses do not stay as bedside nurses for very long. I do vascular access nursing now, so I am in and out in like 10 minutes, maybe 45 if we are putting a PICC in, and so far its the only nursing job I have been able to tolerate!! Hoping to get back on the ambulance as a medic and out of the hospital soon though!! Keep going, there is a light at the end of the tunnel for you!!
Andy, I have a question. I know MCG offers a dual degree option at no extra cost within the enrichment phase? Is there a reason why the majority of students don't take advantage of such a program? When do students sign up, and are there any downside? Thanks in advance
Happy birthday Andy 🎉 Mind if I ask how old are you ? Just curious cuz I am an IMG hoping to get into Anesthesiology and wondering if I am too old for it
just turned 25, never too late for anesthesia in particular. a lot of older non traditional residents who are starting at even mid to late 30s and even early 40s don't have regrets choosing anesthesia
our anesthesia department does have monthly lectures for the interns but the protected didactic time for us doesn't come until we enter the anesthesia years
Here where I live, you cant get fired for consuming medical marijuana on the job. Which can be prescribed for insomnia. The only way I can handle 16 hour sessions of psychoanalysis without actually getting up one time. Inpatient psych is something else. We love tangentiality
As a first year, when you’re on call, are you expected to do things completely alone? Like do you get to text your seniors and ask questions? I’m just really intimidated by the idea of taking such a responsibility so early on my training period 🫣 (applying to med schools now so we will see if that even becomes my reality..)
Absolutely get to text and ask seniors stuff whenever, but the expectation is for you to figure it out to the best of your ability first because typically the seniors have a lot of responsibility themselves too
Don't apologize for the lack of uploads. Take care of yourself first. We'll be waiting and cheering for you on the sidelines!
Thank you :)

Jake! love your channel too, wanna be a psychiatrist

I’m exhausted lol, sleep debt is real I don’t care what conflicting studies show. I am a walking case study of it
I trust you will see it through to the end g. You are an inspiration.
thank you so much :) definitely comforting to see the kind words
I just turned in an assignment that I toiled over for 5 days, and then Andy drops. This must be my reward.
haha good timing

gotta constantly improve the experience for the residents training after you 🫡

Happy Birthday. Not the best way to celebrate but just know you are doing great! Hang in there your dream days of Anesthesiology are coming until then just keep being the great Andy that you are.
haha each day i yearn to go back to the ORs and back to anesthesia
The surgery at 6:45 sounds like an orthopedic one, probably a joint replacement or insertion of a rod.
total knee!
I wanna see a real journey of a resident, I would be concerned if there were frequent uploads lmao. Take all the time you need, love this channel
Thank you for your transparency

thank you so much :) it's part of the job so thank a resident if you ever get care from them
Absolutely! 💯💪😇
That room at night is such a vibe man
First of all, Happy Birthday Andy! Very raw and informative video!
Thank you so much :)

I would say that surgery noise was an intramedullary rod placement in a femur lol def something ortho
total knee!
Your videos are excellent.
thank you :)
How does call week work if you’re sick? I assume you gotta show up anyways haha but is there PTO, or backup residents for call shifts?

Wow, I guess I still have a chance then. I am 25 as well. Anyway thanks a lot Andy.
Hope all the best for you 😁
6:50 sounds like the hammer for a hip replacement lol
Hang in there Andy🤗 a little curious, do you guys have like lectures in residency like you did in med school? Or solely rotations
our anesthesia department does have monthly lectures for the interns but the protected didactic time for us doesn't come until we enter the anesthesia years
Guessing the surgery at 6:52 and my guess is spinal fusion rod placement
Hahaha total knee but close
This is exactly why I’m doing crna instead. 24/48hr call!
What was that song in the beginning?

That surgery was defo orthopedics! run me my moneyyyy
That Rolex probably causing hate
What are your thoughts on medical cannabis?
Sounds like a joint replacement😂
ESWL?
Total hip!
Total knee😂
6:38
Obviously vitrectomy...
that's a really loud vitrectomy
That hairline though
Bennie Rapids
6:50 Ortho 🗿🗿🗿
Gotta love it 🔨
I thought times were changing from that inhumane and dangerous lifestyle put upon residents. Clearly not
