    Great job Tom,I've been struggling looking for a consistent backhand my entire life.

    Tom, trust you are keeping well. I used your backhand videos to improve my one hander, and now I feel much more comfortable and fluent. As you say in this video, it is much more effortless than any other shots. Please make some videos on making the forehand just as effortless. Also learnt tons from your backhand slice videos. Awesome stuff!

    hi Tom, this is one of the best videos you've produced, and one of the best instructions on the one-handed topspin backhand on the internet. Love that rubber band analogy.
    Pull the rubber band, and let it fly!

    I love the 1 hander for the advantage of having the contact point further out in front of the body taking away time from my opponent and for that freedom feel. The 2 hander feels so "claustrophobic" after using the 1 hander. As a fellow instructor I love how you use the "MPH" and rubber band analogy to explain the one continuous motion concept GREAT VIDEO SIR

    Thanks again Tom, I guess we are off a similar age and I find your analysis and application of tennis coaching really good. The modern tennis racquet is lighter. It also requires a different application...not like the old L2 or M1.
    Thanks for you making the tennis easier for others.

    I'm glad you had that disclaimer at the end but I think you understated it. You gonna lose a TON of control if you do this. As an owner of a one-handed-backhand for over 45 years, I know that this shot is very delicate and the less herky-jerky, backswing motions, the better. I don't think the added couple of MPHs gained by this motion is worth the loss of control. For me, move your feet EARLY and get to the spot so you have enough time for a clean shoulder turn, and the firing of the hips should be all the power you'd need.

    Great stuff. I will practice more of a continuous looping take back with a loose arm and shoulder. One thing is that I don’t seem to see your weight going forward at contact but more of a little lean back.

    A genuine advice from someone who went from 0 in OHB to people standing up to my shots and applauding me for my OHB.
    I evolved seeing his videos since the past 6 months. My accuracy was around 2-3 shots out of 10 and those too felt bad but now I can easily put 6-8 shots out of 10 with placement as per my choice. I generate top spin from my OHB and hit winners with a lot of pace.
    Just dont keep watching videos of his everyday and start playing matches. Watch his video and hit atleast 100 balls per day from your OHB and track your improvement. It will help immensely.
    And thanks TOM AVERY for improving my OHB.
    P.S - I love those Ahaa! moments too! :)

    Tom,
    Thank you for a tremendous lesson on the one-handed backhand. Can you speak to specifically the take back of the one-handed backhand? I would like to know your thoughts on two (2) different styles, i.e, the Wawrinka (loop) take back vs. the Bake (level/straight back) take back. Do you see benefits to either one or does it not matter. I am a USTA 4.0 computer ranked player with a goal of moving to 4.5 within 12 months. I find I am able to get more shape (a higher deeper topspin) ball with the loop backhand on moderate paced balls but the level take back seems to allow me to create more shear pace, i.e., straight back and fire through to the finish but it seems a little tougher to create margin over the net.

    • @Fundamentalsoftennis
      @Fundamentalsoftennis  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They both have great backhands, however, of the two I think Stan's is better. I don't think anyone on the planet can hit it as hard as Stan and with tremendous accuracy, especially down the line. Stan creates more racquet head speed with the higher take back, then as he drops the racquet down before swinging forward the racquet really starts to pick up speed into the contact area, also, I think the higher take back allows him to load up his wrist, which he releases through the contact area, again it equals more power, besides the fact he has strong upper body strength. All that being said, whatever works best for you is great... you're certainly in good company styling your backhand after James Blake.
      All the best,
      Tom

    can you explain the position of grip when hit the ball?

    • @Fundamentalsoftennis
      @Fundamentalsoftennis  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eastern or semi-western backhand grip... with eastern the inside (palm of hand) of index knuckle and the heel of the hand should be right on top of the racquet handle... for semi-western turn the hitting hand slightly more towards your body. Please see my other backhand videos that show you the difference between these 2 grips.
