What a tragedy. It really highlights the importance of the work Billy has done for the chateau and now for the convent. Bless you all for doing what you can. I cannot believe they would not even let Billy buy the art. So sad. Such a loss to the community. 🧡
Sadly this happens for four reasons 1. Declining Church membership; 2. Regular maintenance is not carried out when it should be with the result that small issues become massive problems; 3. There is no one with deep pockets coming forward to save the building; 4. The community at large does not care enough to come together to save their collective history.
Yes, and now the globalists and Communists can continue to take over and control the people. No one is paying attention…even the Pope is complicit in allowing the destruction of our churches. I agree with you, Ryan, I am outraged…
A lot of the destruction of church buildings and accoutrements in this century is due to the abuses by church clergy that occurred against parishioners/congregation in the previous century. The churches claim they haven't enough funds to pay restitution to the victims so under the guise of accruing funds they are destroying property as punishment to general society for having spoken up about the abuses that occurred, the necessity of accountability and redistribution of finances as deterence.

Thank you for bringing attention to this deplorable act. As a person working in the design and construction industry, I find this heart breaking and have to wonder if this church could not have been saved buy putting it up for tenders. Deeply religious people might have clubbed together to save this piece of history regarded as God's house on Earth. Surely repairing a roof must cost far less than tearing down a whole building? The interior could have been adapted to accommodate modern day businesses. A sad day.
Thanks for sharing this, I know you really cared for this building Ryan. It is a bit strange that they didn't go in and save the contents? They might not have been worth a lot, but were valuable in other ways. When the Anglican church was made redundant in Alassio, Italy, the local Anglican community was invited in to take away the removable stuff and much was removed for use elsewhere. Luckily that church and its related buildings were saved for continuing use by the local community. Very sad. To be fair churches in the UK are being closed down at a crazy rate as well. And many of them do not find a new use. But your point about their being the heart of most communities is so true. And once they are gone, they are gone.
It's also clear to me that the town council wanted the ancient eyesore removed because of what was around it. I certainly don't consider an eyesore. It was a gorgeous building and should have been repurposed. What a shame
The town did not have the money to repair the roof, let along renovate it. It was a safety issue as well, someone would have sued if they got injured by falling tiles etc.
Dear Ryan I am saddened by the destruction of this beautiful church. I’ve watched all your videos and remember you and Billy talking to the mayor about the demo and the cost of repairs to the roof too costly for the town. Too often historical buildings and stirs are destroyed. Very sad myself. Thank you for sharing this once again. Love fr Northern California.❤❤❤
Ryan I agree, none of us want to see our history destroyed. The mayor should had reached out to Billy about housing the artifacts from the church. I don't understand why they would rather let these things go to the landfill instead of being admired by the public in Billy's Convents Chapel. God Bless your kind heart, Kathy USA 🇺🇸
I love architecture and one of the main reasons I watch shows like Billy’s, yours and escape to rural France is to do my part as insignificant as that maybe to help with cost. My support of these channels makes me happy seeing advertisements and the viewers help support the cost of renovations of the historical buildings otherwise lost to time.
I feel the heartbreak - to not salvage the icons, altar, or stained glass is a true shame. I'm glad you were there to document the church's last day. It's fitting that the youtube captioning "thank you" glitch displayed during the first demolition clip.
Remember your video about that church, sadly they didn’t have the money to repair…sadly to see such beautiful building demolished…unbelievable, they could have made apartments in that church, and I do understand Ryan, why you are so disappointed…but don’t let you down by this…and glad Billy and Gwen brought the convent, they are people with a good heart to save the pass, and give it a another function…
That breaks my heart watching that old Church getting demolished. It’s so very sad and the stained glass windows I’d be angry if they didn’t save them. I hate this disposable world. I’m with you Ryan
I’m devastated to see this beautiful monument going down I agree with you the town the region should do something about it go public on television they should be ashamed of themselves

It's a shame Billy couldn't ask to have or buy the statues for the convent, if they're just going in the skip. It's sad when any historic building is demolished.
@@janetpendlebury6808 True, but the mayor also said that the town could not afford to buy the convent and Billy bought that. It was not an entirely serious comment as Billy has several other projects. I'm sure there were items that he could have saved from the church for the convent chapel, had he been given the opportunity.
I’m with you Ryan. It’s heartbreaking to see a historic building hundreds of years old be demolished. It actually makes me sick. It happens all too often in the States which disgusts me but to see France take down a church that probably could have been saved, is so sad. All of that beautiful architecture and history lost. To make matters worse, there will probably be an ugly building erected in its place. Hugs, xx
This is so sad. So much history, gone! I hope all of the records of baptisms, weddings, and funerals are in safe keeping. I really hope the spire and the stained glass get saved.❤
Deplorable, no sense of history. Very upsetting and that this has happened in other places in France, as well as USA. Awful and heart wrenching. The least they could have done was to find out if people were interested in purchasing artifacts inside this beautiful Church. 😢
My regards to Billy 😜
Wow! it is Extremely sad when someone takes down an old cherished building. why did they not give the building materials away for reuse to anyone that wanted them. why did they not restore it? Love watching your videos.
I feel your sadness Ryan, but I suppose they didn’t want to be responsible if anyone got hurt removing something. What a shame though. I also agree that the government there isn’t good, just like ours here in America. Troubled times ahead.
I'm one of those silly sods who gets attached to things and places. That was beautiful piece of architecture with deep meaning to so many locals. Historic and culture aspect being immense, I can't help thinking of some elderly lady or gentleman who are spending their last days in solitude, watching old albums, recalling all those memories inseparable from that old church. How many times they've shad a tear there, how many prayers they've said, how many hopes and sorrows they've left between those walls. How many happy and sad moments they've spent there. Being christened, getting married, christening their children there, grandchildren...saying goodbye to childhood friends, taking a moment to say hello to people they've spent their lives with in the same town on Sunday service...all of that, the entire universe of memories, precious moments is lost. It's like taking away a piece of them. I agree it was avoidable. Look what Dan is doing with a building that was in much worse condition, practically just a frame was left. People buy and restore places from foundations, going through hell of regulations and hidden costs. It could be done. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be for that beautiful church.
Ryan I agree so sad that a beautiful, historic building is being demolished. Unfortunately local towns don't have enough of a budget to repair an old building, I would like to presume that the local mayor did everything he could to find a way to repair this beautiful building rather than just assume that it would cost way too much. I remember one of either yours or Billy's videos where you were filming said video and the local mayor stopped to talk to you both about the church. That was some time ago now. I am sure many people will be of the same mind set as you Ryan in thinking this is so wrong. Lots of love. Jill U.K.XXXXXXX

How heartbreaking that this has to happen. I’m so glad for the previous video you had done about it. I’m glad you were there to be able to document it story. Thanks, Ryan.
I think that most of us feel the same about our own government's!!! Windows, doors, alter and statues should have been saved. They didn't want to save it or any of the thing's from it. Erasing history. It's so very sad to see. Thanks for sharing. God bless your sweet heart and protect.
I'm astonished that with all the Brocantes etc. that the artefacts couldn't have been sold on for someone else to cherish for future generations. Once these buildings are gone they're gone forever! 🙏❤
So heart breaking to witness the wanton destruction of such a building, they're had to be a way to at least save the interior and those beautiful stained glass windows, which are all unique to each church and era. Absolutely disgraceful behaviour from the French Government, they should feel embarrassed and ashamed. Thankyou Ryan for sharing this and I totally agree with you, more should have been done to prevent this from happening.
Im with you Ryan i hate to see the destruction of historic buildings, that history is gone foe ever, and by the looks of it nothing was salvaged. Such a shame.😢.v😊🏴
I just rewatched this and I have now gone from sad to frankly, really angry. There must be some kind of law that they cannot destroy those windows? Okay, going back to sad. Ick. 🧡
So sad to see that beautiful church torn down, I sure hope they are saving those gorgeous stained glass windows! I enjoy your light-hearted make people smile side, but it’s nice to see this side of Ryan as well.
It’s sad that they didn’t want to collectively do something to save this building. If this had promo and internet go fund me or something!! My goodness in this day and age the building could have repurposed it could have carried on as a moment in time. So sad. Thanks for sharing it Ryan. 😦
The problem is everything on earth is about money they can explain it all to God when they see him they have destroyed a house of worship of all buildings on earth that's the last building you should be messing with
@@prestonlard7687God never said you should build big churches. People do it for their own vanities. In the US many times someone buys the building and turns it into a business or a home. Jesus said "Where ever 2 or more of you have gathered, there is God". Once it was no longer holding services it became just another beautiful old building.
@@prestonlard7687 God shouldn't have destroyed the roof during the storm if he did not want 'his' house knocked down. Religion is in decline so churches are no longer needed.
The bricks, the stonework, the statues, all could've been sold, recycled and would have brought money to the church or monies donated to the needy. Old bricks sell for top dollar in the States. Sickening it all went into the trash.
Inconceivable! Heart wrenching, imagine the work, workers endured to build structure during their time, skills and craftsmanship, all to go down in a fraction of the time vs the time it took to build.
I agree with you Ryan, they could have saved the Church, they needed to attend to the roof right after the storm, instead they left the gaping hole and allowed the mother nature take over. I can't believe as well that they didn't remove the Alter and the statues, plus whatever else could have been removed, the beautiful stained glass, as I recall you and Billy talked to the mayor and mentioned the Convent, I am not sure if Billy left a number, anyway he knows where the convent is. I feel your loss and your sadness.
I, an American, literally just watched a news report about the extraordinary repairs (hand hewing beams, no powertools!) to Notre Dame in Paris, and comparing that to this. 😢😢😢😢😢
This video made me cry. Ever since you first told us about it many months ago I guess we all hoped there would be a way to still save it. What a das day.
Sad about the church, but mad about its interior. It’s awful that the historic objects inside weren’t saved. If you can’t save the building, at least save its contents!
Change is hard to absorb, even if it's change for the better. But this sort of change goes layers deeper, down to the soul. All that craftsmanship, charm, symbolism taken away leaves one feeling bereft. In our city, old churches have been made over into condominiums, and as much of the original building kept intact so people know it was a church. It's absolutely breathtaking. I don't see why people use a bit of imagination, maybe even make it a competition among designers, and the best one wins...gain publicity using social media. This church could have housed 10 families, and brought more people into the town, definitely more revenue with property tax etc.
Oh Ryan I truly understand how you feel. The way you and Billy feel for the true architectural history. I am very ill at heart knowing that they did nothing to reuse anything. There was so much that could have been salvaged. Truly very ill over this. I remember when you and Billy went and spoke with the Maror about the building .😢
I agree with you Ryan. So sad each time a piece of history is demolished. Unfortunately, here in the U.S. this is very common. 😢 I also agree with you about the government and it is also the same in the U.S. I love France and the people I know there.

Ryan, I agree that it is sad, very sad, part of the identity of the people of a place of a country that is lost , disappeared. A lost of a cultural heritage.
I'm sorry Ryan. It's heartbreaking to see a historic building like this being destroyed, along with all the craftmanship and skill that went into it. It might be worth your while approaching the demolition crew, see if you can rescue something from it. Appalled that they didn't remove the altar, statues or stations of the Cross. Take some comfort from the fact that you're conserving some of the history of the town in your restoration of the convent and perhaps your video might make people think twice about what they're doing. Goodness knows how many people were baptised, married and buried from here. It's not just a building. Maybe you can wake them up. Sometimes it takes the outsider to see things as they are, and their value. Take care and looking forward to your next video.
I agree with you Ryan. It just seems wrong to tear it down without even trying to save the statues and the windows. I imagine there are pews that were salvageable too.
Even from the outside it looks like a beautiful old church, but if the roof is damaged the weather is going to continue to get in and continue to damage the entire structure and if nobody is willing to buy it and restore it. The destruction of such a beautiful building makes me sad. It didn't have to happen and it falls on all of us to do as much as we can, as I know all of you are trying to save as much as possible. I think Dr. Seuss said it wonderfully in "The Lorax" "But now," says the Once-ler, "Now that you're her, the word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear. Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."
Thank you so much Ryan, for caring such a lot. That's an important starting point towards being able to do useful work in the future. I think that it's really helpful to everyone watching your videos to be able to hear the truth of what's going on, not just see all the shallow surface pleasures, but get an idea of the reality. I understand that there is quite a lot going on politically, which affects peoples lives, in a country that I love so much too - the people, the history the architecture, the way of life and the countryside...as well as the absolute beauty of the language. So every little thing that anyone can do to try to help moving forwards is so very valuable ❤❤❤
So sad. So sad. I agree with you. I have been to France and saw Notre Dame before it caught fire. They are rebuilding it. When I saw the film of this church being torn down it filled me with the same sick feeling as when I saw Notre Dame on fire. I wish they had replaced the roof on this church like they are doing for Notre Dame.
Thank you for sharing your feelings about the historical nature of this beautiful old church. Remember that the history books are filled with stories of ruins in Europe. What survived the World Wars was left to ruin by the town's managers with the idea that make room for the new and modern structures which are built as temporary will "beautify" the town... *b..s..
Here's the thing... the cost to pay the company doing the demolition would certainly not be less that it would have cost to install a new roof. Personally, I think it's the Catholic Church that wanted it down and the money after selling the land, and most likely some of that revenue would go to the city and the mayor. That's my guess.
The Catholic church could not sell the land, nor could they enure any income from it. Churches in France were legally declared state property more than a century ago, requiring local governments to maintain them at public expense while allowing their use for Masses. As this particular church's membership decreased to the point that the weekly collection plate revenue could no longer support a priest. the few parishoners that remained merged with the church in the next town, and before it was deconsecrated they would of course have removed any religious artifacts and or ephemera to that new location. As the building was no longer used for worship, the town was free to repurpose the land and/or the building as they saw fit, and regretfully they could not find a suitable use for the existing building.
Billy and Ryan actually got to chat with the mayor and the lowest bid, literally to just stabilize everything was in the millions and millions of pounds. I highly doubt demo was even close to that much. Cost of demo is just the time and fuel to run the machines for a few days.
@@GrandmaLM So who owns the church that is being demolished? Perhaps the town? I don't know how this goes in France. I live in Italy and the vatican controls pretty much all of the church properties in the world, and only they can deconsecrate churches so they can be sold or torn down.
@@alecs1196 I didn't know that Catholic churches in France were state property. That seems like a very unusual move for the vatican. I'm not Catholic but it interests me because the old churches everywhere are cultural treasures. I have to research how this came about. I do know from a friend in France that years ago she told me that France was secular in every respect, and even anti-semitic. Anyway, thanks for the feedback. Interesting topic.
there is no point in the diocese paying a fortune for renovations if there are no faithful to attend Sunday masses. and I also believe that it is not a Catholic church, but a Lutheran or Anglican one. unfortunately it is better to sell the abandoned building, as vandals sneak in and desecrate the altar, so it is better to demolish it anyway since people no longer care about the importance of the church.
As you said a real shame that they didn't take statues and other things out. Perhaps its a victim of a rather large restoration project that the French Ministry of Culture has on its hands.

It’s sad and fills me with dismay. Thank you. May you please take care and stay safe. Louisa. 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️🤩🤩🤩
That is all too sad for words. Heartbreaking.
I feel the pain your feeling. It is a rational logical emotion. I do not understand the village government allowing this to happen. I grieve with you
I feel the heartbreak - to not salvage the icons, altar, or stained glass is a true shame. I'm glad you were there to document the church's last day. It's fitting that the youtube captioning "thank you" glitch displayed during the first demolition clip.
I feel he same way Ryan. This makes me sick to my stomach! 😪
Absolutely unbelievable Im in total shock !!! Such a beautiful church !! Why would they not try to save it?
Or sell the beautiful things inside?? 💔
Oh my heart is breaking.
I am in the USA > we have other things like this that do not make sense. New leaders are in order everywhere > Agreed 👍 Ryan. THANKS for showing us what goes on around you all as it gives us insites & better rounded perspectives. Stay Safe Ryan.
It's a shame Billy couldn't ask to have or buy the statues for the convent, if they're just going in the skip. It's sad when any historic building is demolished.
I think he did offer awhile back to put things in the convent.
@@maryannspicher Sure did
It's a shame Billy didn't buy the church.
@@alanrobinson7866 The mayor said it would take millions of euro's to repair just the roof, I dont think many people could afford that.
So terribly sad. That church was an important part of the town for hundreds of years.
Deplorable, no sense of history. Very upsetting and that this has happened in other places in France, as well as USA. Awful and heart wrenching. The least they could have done was to find out if people were interested in purchasing artifacts inside this beautiful Church. 😢
If the artifacts are still the property of the church maybe it was up to them to try and sell them?
My regards to Billy 😜
Wow! it is Extremely sad when someone takes down an old cherished building. why did they not give the building materials away for reuse to anyone that wanted them. why did they not restore it? Love watching your videos.
I feel your sadness Ryan, but I suppose they didn’t want to be responsible if anyone got hurt removing something. What a shame though. I also agree that the government there isn’t good, just like ours here in America. Troubled times ahead.
They did not have the money to restore it, and safety would be the issue in letting people grab what they wanted.
Just think of the wonderful home Billy could have given those artifacts 😢😢
What was the name of the church and the town please?
Hi Ryan 👋 thanks for sharing this video. Sad, The destruction of a beautiful past era and they didn't even try to sell any artifacts, no words.
Have a great night Ryan.
Ryan I believe you are a wonderful young man who loves his new country and doesn’t want to see the destruction of its beautiful buildings coming down. This is part of what this country is famous for. Not being able to stop it or save some of it is disheartening. But I believe maybe you have found a new passion to work on for yourself. There needs to be more men like you who care so much.
Thank you Ryan and Billy for having such respect. I am so sad.
It is heartbreaking that the city did not allow to let the windows and other beautiful items and stones. Heartbreaking
Thank you for sharing your heart, Ryan.
It's always sad to see an old building torn down.
I'm astonished that with all the Brocantes etc. that the artefacts couldn't have been sold on for someone else to cherish for future generations. Once these buildings are gone they're gone forever! 🙏❤
I am sorry that they went thru with this. This is something my country would do. They have no respect for our historic buildings.
We have the same problem in South Africa, what they don't like they burn to the ground!
Next step is Communism. I'm not even joking, it should scare everyone.
@@Leonorha-co1gkThat’s very sad, sorry to hear it!
Heart wrenching, barely could watch this. Sending you hugs, this had to be depressing to see in person.❤
Save the stained glass! That is crazy to lose that beauty.
That is so sad. I think of all the soldiers who worshiped there and were remembered there and their families.😢
I remember your video. Heartbreaking.
It’s sad that they didn’t want to collectively do something to save this building. If this had promo and internet go fund me or something!! My goodness in this day and age the building could have repurposed it could have carried on as a moment in time. So sad. Thanks for sharing it Ryan. 😦
I can understand why they did it, the cost to repair it was so high. It's terribly sad that such a beautiful old building has been demolished😢
Love your passion for history and preservation!!
I agree with you Ryan. So sad each time a piece of history is demolished. Unfortunately, here in the U.S. this is very common. 😢 I also agree with you about the government and it is also the same in the U.S. I love France and the people I know there.
Heartbreaking 💔 unfortunately this is happening in a lot of places to a lot of historical buildings. It’s good to see and read other people are heartbroken and appalled by this.
it's a catastrophe!!! THe news mentionned it yesterday but I didn't know it was in your region. Thank you for your compassion. You are British and you have more respect than the French. I can't believe nothing could have been done. It's a very anxious sign of deterioration of our culture. 😮💨
They could have let people salvage some of the things like statues and windows. Love you Ryan ❤️
So sorry, Ryan. Your video was heartbreaking, & sadly this is happening everywhere. Here in America the same thing. History is being destroyed to make way for offices & parking lots. Many thanks to you and Billy for giving a damn about these stunning historical buildings.
while the West destroys its churches the Arabs build their mosques, one day Europe will reap what it is sowing now. Christianity is the only light in this world of darkness, the West is sinking its own culture, and the Muslim Arabs will take what is ours. congratulations left!
Not surprising in this day and age we live in.
We JUST got home from a French holiday and after seeing so many churches and villages I wholeheartedly agree that it is so disheartening. France is so beautiful!!!!
I am so surprised they didn’t try and save some of that building. Destruction of the alter and the beautiful windows. This is such a sad thing to see.
I’m not religious but it brought a tear to my eye to see such a beautiful piece of history being destroyed 😢
I agree with you Ryan. It just seems wrong to tear it down without even trying to save the statues and the windows. I imagine there are pews that were salvageable too.
Ryan u have a tender heart. So sad to be destroying the old church.
Even from the outside it looks like a beautiful old church, but if the roof is damaged the weather is going to continue to get in and continue to damage the entire structure and if nobody is willing to buy it and restore it. The town had only the one choice. It's sad. It's disappointing that nobody came forward to repair and repurpose. Such a beautiful structure but it happens everywhere. It happens here in America too all the time
I'm not so sure that would happen in England. England and France share the same history.
@@daxcoco1229 England and Wales has thousands of redundant churches, Usually only the most historic ones get saved not the Victorian/Edwardian type so much. Some get repurposed into homes or community centres but not all, we are losing them at a terrifying rate
Oh Ryan, I am heartbroken. It seems so senseless not to re-purpose. Some of the stuff that was in there. They would’ve recouped to quite a bit. Beautiful history. Such a shame.💔💔💔💔💔🤗🇺🇸
The United States rarely saves, reserving history, historical buildings. Tear them down put up new, ugly ones. I’ll.💔💔💔
I'm sure it was devastating for the town... Heartbreaking. It takes so much money to restore a condemned building of this size. A precious bit of history. Such a shame it wasn't saved.
You would be a perfect choice..to champion the life and future of historical buildings in France. ❤️
I agree with you Ryan, it is a shame. Other historical sites have been saved and it unbelievable that nothing could be done. Must be a money issue.
So sad o see an old church go down like that. When you think of the hundreds of thousands of people who were baptized, married , or who had their funerals there, and those who faithfully went to Mass every Sunday for hundreds of years there. 😢 such a sad ending. I can’t believe the statues and Alter were left there to be demolished also. I can see why you are upset Ryan. It’s awful.
Such a shame, it could have had other uses, thank you for sharing 😊
I've never seen you this upset before. What a beautiful soul you have. You are so right Ryan. I agree with everything you said. 😢
As you said a real shame that they didn't take statues and other things out. Perhaps its a victim of a rather large restoration project that the French Ministry of Culture has on its hands.
That is so sad that they didn't let people remove stuff. The stone, the wood, stain glass, statues... I realize it couldn't be a free for all because it wasn't safe but that building was gorgeous. Thank you guys for sharing the update with us.
The old churches in France are living, breathing beings. This makes me cry. You can feel the lives of those who built and used the buildings over the centuries.
Disgusting indeed! At the very least there should have been an effort to salvage the stain glass, altar etc. Outrageous! They tore the historical heart out of this town!
It’s heartbreaking to watch 💔
Ryan it is soul destroying to see such utter destruction, not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well.. The history lost and the sheer magnificence of times past, totally
