I noticed that three of the finalist images had a symmetry to them, with the pillars standing out as the only one without a type of symmetry. The Phantom Galaxy is beautifully symmetrical and has that awesome eldritch color which is why I'm not at all surprised it won. I literally looked at it for five minutes when I first saw it a few months ago. Great work from the engineers, scientists and artists that bring all these beautiful images to us.

5:27: My wow moment was seeing _The Weirdly Red Thing_ in the first ever image from a technical release-they'd just aligned the telescope mirrors and taken these images to, essentially, showcase it. This one was an analogue of the Hubble's famous Deep Field; the stunning difference was that JWST had all this light collected in just 12 hours! It was released as a larger image, coloured in more orange tones, and the centre of attention was that star with the eight hallmark JWST spikes. It was a stunning PR image indeed, and Fraser was entirely correct: that first image, processed from the same dataset, was presented by the President. But I… I ignored the star, I looked at the myriads after myriads of galaxies in it, and thought to myself that this was the first ever dataset which had these galaxies captured. Hundreds of galaxies seen for the first time ever! I lost myself for a whole hour in the image. Then it grabbed my attention: _The Weirdly Red Thing._ It's there on the SMACS image too. You wouldn't miss it at 5:27 directly to the right of the upper right corner of the box that Fraser had stuffed Joe in. It's possibly a high-z galaxy. It's was its colour indeed that dumbstruck me: in both image renditions, the spectrum long-to-short monotonicity is preserved: it's the reddest speckle even in infrared data. I was in awe thinking of the distance to this object-and it was right there! in the very first press image from the new instrument! already revealing the unseen, unimaginable depths of the ancient young Universe!!!
It could be a relatively nearby very red or, more likely, brown dwarf photobombing; only its spectrum could tell. If so, it would probably be the faintest directly imaged brown dwarf. Even though they are a dozen for a halfpenny in our Galaxy, many millions of them, they're ordinarily too faint to see. To bring up a spectral comparison, the star at the centre is in fact a nearby red dwarf, and it came out blue in this image, shifted into the visible range. The object, whatever it be, is indeed very, very red! Yeah, by now, we have light from a few of incredibly red and ancient galaxies captured by JWST, but imagine seeing The Redness for the first time, in the first ever released press image. THAT was a truly striking moment!

Surprised I didn't hear (yet) least-photo-shopped as a criteria. Fiery hourglass is tinted red fine, but at least not multiple colours. Also it's beautiful and illustrates one thing *perfectly* being the jets streaming away from the disc at perpendicular angles. Clear winner in the 1st round!

35:05 Stephan name pronunciation: Édouard Stephan was as French as anyone could only be, and the name is traditionally stressed on the last syllable “ste-FAN,” as it would be in French when stressed at all. I've seen incorrect spelling of the name even at the NASA Hubble's website, which called him “Edouard M. Stephan;” his correct full name is Édouard Jean-Marie Stephan. FWIW, he discovered the “quintet” in the 1870s, most likely with the famous 80cm first ever coated-mirror reflector, built by Foucault himself (the instrument had been in operation for nearly 100 years. until the late 1960s!) at _observatoire de Marseille,_ which Stephan was director of at the time.

Hey fraser awesome video. Just in case you can respond me. When you showed SMACS 0723 picture I was wondering...could you calculate what percentage of the sky is that picture? I know we cant see it with our naked eye, but knowing this data would give me a little idea of the vastness of the universe.

I didn’t expect Jupiter to win either. It’s basically Jupiter with different wavelengths, aka different colors

Fraser, if a nebula is opaque enough to prevent a telescope seeing the stars behind it, doesn't that mean that it would be opaque to the naked eye. If a telescope with a long exposure can't see any photons from behind it, how does the human eye have any chance to see what is behind it.
Seeing it glow is a harder challenge. I expect that properly placed bright star(s) should make it possible to see something. Still nothing like the photos.
