    Very good summery. As a fellow Porsche Fan, I can agree that this season so far is extremely hard to watch but like you said Porsche operates in both IMSA and WEC, plus has the most cars so they have by far the most data to work with over the Winter. Most people seem to forget that the now legendary 919 was also underwhelming in its first season (2014) with only one win in Sao Paulo at the end of the season (3rd and 9th in the Championship). In 2015 they won 6 out of 8 races (1st and 3rd in the Championship), therefore I have big hopes that we might see a Porsche resurgence in 2024.

    I kinda think the limiting factor of the Porsche proto endurance program in WEC is their platform of choice. Yeah the LMDH is a more cost-effective than hypercar but it has more restrictions. Oh also the BoP in WEC so far hasn't helped any LMDH cars to be more competitive against hybrid hypercars. I won't be surprised if there's no LMDH cars winning a WEC race this season.

    • @TassieLorenzo
      @TassieLorenzo ปีที่แล้ว +2

      " I won't be surprised if there's no LMDH cars winning a WEC race this season." It seems grossly unfair to penalise Ferrari and Toyota for building better racing cars and to penalise them so heavily to the point of LMDh cars winning races IMO. If anything it is a relief that the two properly engineered, thoroughly developed cars are at the front as they should be, in spite of carrying the most BOP ballast.
      The idea that you should be able to just stick an old LMP2 engine (Porsche), or old DTM engine (BMW) or F2 engine (Alpine) in an LMP2 with some stylised bodywork and be given "by rights" a high probability of winning the 24 hour Le Mans or WEC races (against much higher budget cars that have been traditionally engineered in the F1--like LMP1 way) just seems crazy.

    I have only casually observed this new "LMH /LMDh" business, but as a fellow Porsche freak, I gotta think the problem is that the 963, is not a 100% Porsche design as it is LMDh using a chassis made by somebody, and common stuff to other cars. To win, and assert the dominance that is expected from a successor of the 962 ... Porsche has to stop half stepping, and do a 100% Porsche design.
    Norby Singer spoiled us... The 956 /962 proved to be such a killer extension of 917 greatness, that "excellence is expected". First place, is not enough. First through seventh place ? ... Yeah ! More like it ! Yeah, this new crap allows more lesser folk to compete ,and has bunch of brands competing ...But for my $$$ , (about $0.02 US) Racing has to advance technology. Push beyond current limits. Do great things. This "leveling" may be fun if you are a slot car racer (I am) ... But prototype has to be ultimate , killer state of the art stuff...
    Yeah ,the $$$ involved runs everybody else out ... Maybe this LMH business, can be a not quite "hypercar" (as old LMP 1's are supposedly much faster) and still allow LMP to be the real "Hypercar". The new Toyota, 11 seconds slower that the LMP Toyota ? (at Le Mans ?) ... That's just going backwards ...

    Much smarter men than me are paid impressive amounts of money and dedicate their lives to engineering, design, garages, test tracks, mathematics, and physics and would be working to answer that question this very second if it were foundationally sound.
    What I am sure of is this. In the time it takes anyone to read this comment, PORSCHE, the greatest moniker in the history of automobile racing will have added to it's staggering win totals in the most prestigious races worldwide or added to the 1000's of informal and undocumented spankings placed upon Audi, AMG, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, BMW, Corvette, Lotus, and other also-rans on the world's streets, highways, and bi-ways each day.
    We now bring into the equation the 1000's of daily challenges we turn away from Challengers, Mustangs, Chargers, Corvettes. Typhoon, F250's, etc.
    These must be turned away. For the children. For all children.
    They are counted as PORSCHE wins because to ensure the safety of all parties a blood test would have to be taken to determine how much hay and/or contraband is in their bloodstream. A "circle/rectangle/square recognition" exam would also be required of those drivers and Porsche driver's schedules simply have no time for that.
    The 993 Teams worked hard and would have loved to had more wins and a championship in 2023, but downtime only focuses the fury.

It seems to be hard on it's tires which helps building up heat which they probably did because there are no tyre warmers normally in IMSA or WEC besides Le Mans and turbocharged engines can run better while in cooler conditions. Wasn't Penske saying during the first race in the US that their Porsche's were quite heavily ballasted due to the BoP? It seems like the WEC "erred on the safe side" when ballasting Porsche, thinking that Porsche would have an advantage against Cadillac & Toyota because of..... reasons?

    I'm watching lemans right now every night before bed, I'm about half way through. It certainly seems like porsche have picked up the pace and are getting quite a bit more competitive. The main issue I see plaguing them is reliability. They've had so many races where they'd absolutely have gotten a podium finish just completely botched after electrical issues. They were actually surprising me quite a bit at lemans, sometimes fighting and keeping up with toyota, peugeot, cadillac and ferrari. Which is a far cry from races earlier in the year where it just felt like they werent even competing in the same class. I'm really excited for next year, hopefully most of the electrical/mechanical gremlins can get snuffed out, and with 4 more manufacturers heading over to wec its going to be a proper site to behold. I cant believe they are coming to my local track at cota, I'm beyond ecstatic.

    • @DuvJones
      @DuvJones ปีที่แล้ว +6

      There seems to be two things that really hurt the 963.... First is the reliability, and some of that isn't down to Porsche. For example.... at Daytona... that 30min garage work, that was for the spec electric battery. It failed. Porsche doesn't make that part, Williams does and it's been a thing all season that supply is constrained. Still, some of this IS in Porsche's control and it's been bad. Their is a instance in Monza where the 38 Jota..... De Costa was just slamming on the wheel as it just cut out, as he entered the pits and could not run the speed limiter for the pits. Taking a penalty for that.
      The other thing isn't so much top speed, tho that is an issue. It's the aero? I don't know why, but hearing some of the drivers talk on WEC Full Access about the 963 problems at Monza, the aero seems to have been coming up a lot. That is likely a harder fix to keep the vehicle in compliance.
      There have been other smaller things, like tires... it eats them, a bit higher than normal (and WEC [sans LeMans] stopped using tire warmers this year). And well, bugs in the software (See the Spa race).
      I will say this much... I think that the 963, when things are going for it... it's something as it flies, it might have the pace in it to keep up with the 499P/GR010. However, this season seems to be a "death by a thousand cuts". When the problems do show, it's never been a consistence one thing that fails. I will be honest, I think that it would be asking a lot out of Porsche in it's first Hypercar/GTP season given that it's it first run at this after years away, partly why Team Penske is involved in the factory effort to be blunt.
      Peugeot has had a miserable two seasons (half of 2022 and all of this one) but by LeMans, things have been looking up... It will still take time to get Porsche up to speed with its car, but it should be in the fight when they do.

Allegedly, when the post race inspection was conducted, the officials found the #6 car was less than one millimeter too low. This is what Porsche Penske came out saying after the race. Seriously? Less than one millimeter not only ruined Porsche Penske's only victory, but put them at a huge point deficit after getting 0 points from that race when every other car except the #24 BMW got points. That one millimeter might ruin their chance at the championship too.

    I'm not a Porsche fan but I do have a ton of respect for their racing team and history, this is just baffling to me. In addition to fighting for outright pace, I though Porsche had always looked for ways to be consistent and easy to work with. As an example, I heard they were one of the first teams to make sure the pedal, steering wheel effort were balance to make the car easier to drive. I thought in a field where outright pace is constrained, you had to either look for innovation to compete in non-outright conditions (Pug looking for gains in dirty air and the wet), or be consistent, easy to drive, and easy on the tires. I thought Porsche would surely be great at the second one, but they've seemed hard on the rear tires, difficult to drive and inconsistent. Hopefully they can fix their car balance to make them more consistent next year.

    I said this after Daytona, and so far, it's proving to be true: Porsche's struggles are eerily similar to those of Mazda and Acura; that is to say, typically very fast on a single lap and often highly competitive over a full season, but plagued with myriad struggles at the (much longer) blue-riband events. Remember that the engine of the 963 is the only bit that's pure Porsche, with not much else of this effort in common with their successful programs in GTE Pro and LMP1. The chassis is built by Multimatic, and the operations are handled by Penske. While these organizations are, on paper, highly capable outfits, recent history indicates that Stuttgart may not have done their homework. Multimatic's LMP2 chassis has always been a turd, and even with years of work, their Mazda-powered DPi never achieved much, despite lightning-fast quali pace. Meanwhile, the Acura DPi was the best car in the later years of the category in the hands of WTR and MSR, but when Penske had exclusive rights to run it, it never quite matched the Cadillac in endurance events.
