    My second time watching this video. First time I watched it I thought, I don't need another small scale truck. I went to the hobby store today and they had about 20 of them and only one wasn't spoken for. The owner let me drive his with all the upgrades and needless to say I brought the last one home with me. I pulled the body off and was just looking at it. Wife says, what are you doing? I'm looking for things to change. She says, but you haven't even driven it yet. She wasn't wrong so i put a battery in it, drove it in a circle, picked it up, and started looking again. 😂

    Something i did on my SCX24 was taking a 800mA 2S lipo, separate both cells, put longer wires and install one cell on each rockslider/side panel. Put the weight down low but still centered :)

    The stock battery fits perfectly sideways up front using factory Velcro strap. And front shocks can't move back all the way or tires contact them at full steer and compression. Thanks for sharing and all of us will figure out our own setups obviously these are the best mini/micro trucks hands down

    You can put the stock battery in up front sideways with no mods to the body or anything, lope a ziptie semi tight around that front platform or use the velcro, that way you can slip the battery in and out easy, and the body kinda holds it in place

    Hey Troy, TY for the great ideas! I took it a bit further and actually cut the front of the frame off! and that front plastic plate, I took off and cut in half then I mounted each half of that plate to the free top shock tower positions and glued magnets to those to give a double magnet mount to the truck! This gave me full front travel and took some of the higher weight away! :)

    First time watching one of your vids and really enjoyed it. You did something I think a lot of guys skip and that's starting with the no or low cost mod's. Seems lots of reviewers on YT go from stock to full mod with $500+++ worth of parts in one leap. Not that it's not worth it and power to them if they have the cash. But I think it leaves a majority of us standing there, scratching or hanging our heads. So it was very nice, and much appreciated, to see you start in the no budget basement. I hope Redcat reads this because you've answered almost all my questions about the Ascent 18 and have pushed me towards getting one be cause it looks like it could run quite well out of the box with some DIY mod's. (I haven't got much to spare for things like this. And being in Canada, without companies adjusting prices for us, a lot of this stuff ends up double the price with the US exchange rate, shipping costs, taxes, and import fees. Really sucks for us)
    Only thing that would have been nice to see would have been weighing the rig with the batt and esc in some of the other positions, like batt on the tran/motor and esc on the skid, just to see the difference. BUT, I appreciate that's a bunch more work filming too. :)
    Again, thanks for thinking of us in the cheap seats! I'll go check out more of your 24th vids.

    There are some lithium ion batteries that are the same size as an "AA" battery.
    I would get two of those, mounting one on each side of the motor, and wire them in series with a balance connector.
    They are also heavier and can help put the weight lower with a left right balance.

    • @RoadsideRC
      @RoadsideRC  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Interesting option!
      Honestly though - when looking at the scales, the left-right balance was only off by 1% with the battery on one side.... not sure I am going to worry about that.

    I know this was intended as a free nod video, but curious if you've given thought and planning to create a 3d printed battery tray. Where you put the battery obviously affected the side to side weight bias. If you could mount the battery on top of the motor, that would shift weight to the front, add weight of the printed part and keep the weight side to side as 50/50. Would also be something you could sell for those of us without 3d printers 😉

    • @RoadsideRC
      @RoadsideRC  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Interesting idea!
      I have been running this truck with the little 400mah lipo on the side. Scales show the side-to-side balance is only off 1-2%.
      With such a little bias, I don't think it is worth worrying about.
      But - I might get zesty and make something like that for testing!

      The chassis is nice and low...it is sitting on some very tall portals.
      I wonder what other axles would swap under it...???

    • @wingnutbert9685
      @wingnutbert9685 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was thinking the same. But after seeing it with the body off, looks like part of that look is because the shock towers are tall so that kinda pushes the body up making it look more top heavy that it may actually be. Only a side to side tip test could say for sure. And as mentioned, the portals push it up too.

  • @CannonMusic05
    @CannonMusic05 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Went into a hobby shop not even thinking about this truck. I was thinking about getting different axles for my FMSK 10 and then the guy at the RC counter started talking about the Redcat Ascent 18 saying how crazy it was even right out of the box. He let me run the one that he had purchased and done some upgrades to and then I kind of just had to buy one and I’m very impressed with it. I put some aluminum rims on it which I believe lowered the center of gravity, even more and now I’m probably gonna do a few of these things that you’ve shown in this video today, in your opinion, are the brass axle housings a good idea

    Great video. These a very helpful tips. I don't know a lot about crawling. With the battery move you now have more weight to one side. Could this effect side hill crawling? Would it be possible to take two of the smaller batteries and mount one each side with a "y" connector. Or just mount two of those smaller batteries and plug in one when the other runs down. I understand this defeats the goal of reduced weight, but it might give it more balance side-to-side. Just a thought.

    • @RoadsideRC
      @RoadsideRC  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good thinking!
      That is certainly an option, to run two batteries.
      With the smaller battery installed on the side, the side-to-side balance is 51/49...so basically no difference. I doubt it makes a difference in most situations.

      Hello - awesome that you are jumping into the RC drift scene!
      You are right - you already have a good chassis platform to start from.
      The parts you spec'd:
      - servo - that will work great
      - motor - also a good choice!
      - ESC - I would suggest stepping to the newly released Hobbywing 10BL120 G2: www.hobbywingdirect.com/products/quicrun-10bl120-esc-g2?_pos=4&_sid=62cfc1e49&_ss=r This ESC is just a few more dollars, but allows a LOT more functionality than the 10BL60 you listed.
      - servo - solid, very common choice. I personally perfer other servos, but MANY folks use the Yokomo you listed.
      - Controller - this is HARD NO. You do NOT want the Dumbo for drifting. If you really want to go cheap, go Flysky GT3C: amzn.to/48LnaAF It has A LOT more functionality than the DumboRC, for a small price up.
      Good luck with the build!

      @@shawn3218 The gearing will get you started. You will change pinions depending on the size of space you are running.
      I honestly would not recommend swapping to that Yokomo servo. Not only is it more expensive - but you also need a programmer to go with it. The AGFRC is just as good for a fraction of the cost. If you are going to spend more - go with the ReveD RS-ST instead.
