When I was a young kid, I grew up next to a kind old lady whose husband had been a B-17 pilot. Mrs. Spicer told my parents that his plane was named "Little Stinker" and literally featured a skunk as the art on its side! She knew little about his missions though, it may have been because he didn't want to frighten her (she actually was raising several kids while her husband was serving).

One of the b25's in the Doolittle raid was called ruptured duck. Featuring Donald duck with cross crutches. A friend owned one in the air museum in Paris TX. Also named ruptured duck. I would like to know more about its original life. I believe it crashed on the beach in China after running out of fuel after the raid on tokyo

    • @Niinsa62
      @Niinsa62 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I remember that one from the book Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. True story, not fiction. I think the plane got its name after someone pranked the pilot into thinking his B-25 had been damaged/ruptured beyond repair, just before the raid. Or maybe the nose art of the ruptured duck was the prank - "Your plane has been ruptured!". Anyway, the pilot and the crew decided on keeping the name. And yes, I think they crashed into the sea while trying to land on a beach in China, and the crew was banged up pretty badly, so they were pretty much a ruptured duck afterwards. I seem to remember two of the crew members that still could walk hauling another crew member out of the water, only realizing afterwards that they had hauled him out by his dislocated and broken arms. Ouch. The Chinese locals were very helpful, smuggling the Americans away from the occupying Japs, even though this cost them dearly afterwards. Japanese reprisals like the gates of hell had opened, murder and mayhem.

My WWII Vet dad told me the medal every vet got for having served honorably was known as "The Ruptured Duck." He gave me his. The name seemed to come partly from the artwork not looking all that good: a rather wobbly duck, like a ruptured duck. Hadn't known the connection to Doolittle's Raiders.

The B25 straffers with the Green Dragon nose art were amongst the best. When 8-50 cals were blazing the dragon seemed to be spitting fire. The Japanese had a bounty on any of the airmen captured as the squad reeked so much havoc and fear and destruction.

I used to be a docent for the CAF when they were headquartered in Midland, Texas. I volunteered time to help clean up nose art which had been donated by a gentleman who had worked in the destruction yards where a lot of those old warbirds had been chopped up and melted down. He kept the nose art he liked and had them line his fence so that he could see them in the morning when he had his morning coffee. When he passed away, his widow asked if the CAF wanted them and she donated them to the CAF. They still may be with the CAF in the Dallas, Texas area now.

Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby was stripped of her paint and then received her now famous nose art. She was bare aluminum when interned in Switzerland. After her Swiss service, she was sold to the French who used her in a Mapping role, then after being left derelict, she was gifted to the USAF in 1978. She was painted in Olive Drab during the restoration to hide the now uneven aluminum panel shades. And, the original mechanic, and artist, Tony Starcer, applied her nose art once again during restoration. She was restored and then flown to the USAF Museum, but she has now been replaced by The Memphis Belle, and will be going to the Smithsonian Collection for storage and eventual display.

B-25 that flew on the Doolittle raid on Tokyo was named Ruptured Duck, flown by Lt Ted Lawson. (He wrote the book 30 Seconds Over Tokyo.). The story behind the name is interesting. Lt Lawson, practicing takeoffs on a very short runway in preparation for a launch off a carrier flight deck, over rotated and scraped the tail of the aircraft on the runway. His crew chief wrote “ruptured duck” with chalk on the fuselage as a joke on the pilot, but LtLawson thought it was funny so he had the logo designed with Donald Duck on crutches, naming the aircraft Ruptured Duck.

I haven't been there in 30 years, but for a long time there was a B-24 Liberator at the Wright-Patterson National Museum Of The USAF. It was named the Strawberry Bitch, with corresponding nose art. Don't know if she's still there, but she was impressive. My dads' brother was a navigator on a B-24. His plane was knocked down over Germany, and he spent the remaining 6 months of WWII as a POW, until his camp was liberated by the Soviets. He told me he had a very good view of the plane that shot his down. He said it was an ME-262.

Yeah i got one. Do a bit on the B17 Hells Angels. The first B17 to complete 25 missions. 4 days before the Bell. And flew 23 more missions than the bell did. A historical as well as a P.R. injustice to the crew and the ship. For many years i thought the Bell was the first. Till i learned the truth. We can't have a ship called the Hells Angels. Going around the country selling war bonds now can we. That just would be proper. Lets hurry up and get the Bell back first. So we can call it the first. Memphis Bell sounds much Baseball and apple pie than Hells Angels.

WWII Nose art ranged (from the pg to x ratings). It became so bad (Rated X) that during WWII actual censering of Nose Art had to be engaged. Some Nose Art was so bad that even the most hardened had to say, "you painted what on your plane?".
Some decorum was established and a happy medium was established.

I am submitting noise art - Donald Duck by Polish ace Jan Zumbach. This is the most popular Spitfire model in Polish painting in the world. Used on posters advertising war campaigns and election campaigns in Great Britain in the 21st century. The story of Jan Zumbach is no less interesting. A pilot and a bit of an adventurer.
The plane in its nice painting, at least 3 versions, is so popular that you can easily find its painting. However, his life story is as colorful as his Spitfire.

Though the pilot of Big Dick scored 4 air to air kills, I noted 9 swastikas emblazoned on the canopy frame. Did other crews fly the same airframe to run up that tally, or is that a rendering error?

The P47 being called the Jug is because it looked like a milk jug when stood on end. The British thought what the Americans were saying a short for Juggernaut .

Good video! Excellent concept! About time that nose art was examined with more detail...Good job! P.S.- sorry I don't have more detail, but I caught a glimpse of a Jug in a combat film that had an intriguing nose art that ended with the number XIV...I know this isn't much info, but could you check it out? Thanks!

This is a bit of a punt as I don't know if Robin Olds ever flew a Jug, but every aircraft he flew was called 'Scat' with a Roman numeral after it. Maybe there was another pilot did the same thing. FWIW the P51 Scat VII is still in flying condition, apparently.

I checked around and I think the Jug I saw had "Hun Hunter XIV" on the fuselage and a brown bird on a round green background wearing an iron cross on the cowling...

I don't like how some of the nose art is restored. They draw it much bigger, according to modern visual standards, rather than the original size. You see this in several warbird restorations.

Hey TJ3 History. I hope you had a good Christmas and a happy new year to you from the UK.🇬🇧 May I request that you do a video on James Edgar Johnson. Better known by his moniker Johnnie Johnson. Johnson was a British pilot who flew the famous Supermarine Spitfire. Flying this superb aircraft he amassed 34 aerial victories. Making him the highest scoring ace of not only the RAF. But the highest scoring allied ace in the Western European campaign. Of his 34 kills, 20 were against the infamous FW 190. Better known to the RAF as the butcher bird. On one occasion, Jonson flew between the rigging of a ship, whilst in pursuit of an fw 190 that was strafing Allied ships. Downing the german plane seconds later. It would mean a lot to me if you were to do a video about Johnnie Johnson. Hope to hear back from you. Once again Happy New year. 🇺🇸 🇬🇧

"Betty's Dream" is a regular at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh (the Oshkosh Fly-In if you're old enough) and has a bat on the nose. Can't remember offhand if it is a B-24, -25, or -26 but the story is fascinating. The pilot's wife dreamed that her husband was riding a huge black bat and somehow knew as long as he stayed on it he would survive the war.

The are a couple of planes I used to see at air shows back in the late 80’s and early 90’s, the B-17 Sentimental Journey and the B-25 Executive Suite. I’m not sure if they would count if you are sticking only to planes that served in WW2. Another good story to cover would be the P-61 Lady in the Dark. That plane scored the last kill of the war.
