  • The popularity of the church Hillsong soared in the U.S. thanks in part to Carl Lentz, its New York lead pastor, whose ties to Justin Bieber and pro athletes made him a celebrity until he was fired and admitted to an affair. Now, in a TODAY exclusive, Hillsong founder Brian Houston speaks publicly about failures within the church. “I’m acknowledging that mistakes have been made,” he says.» Subscribe to TODAY: on.today.com/SubscribeToTODAY

This is the problem, people today worship the pastor instead of Jesus. They look to the man instead of God. 95% of the professed Christians I know today are spiritually disarmed and lost. They think saying “I’m a Christian” is enough. You have to walk your talk. Most don’t. You bring up God, the Bible, anything, and they’re just not interested in any of it. I'd encourage you to rethink this theology. The church started because of men being the head of it on earth (the Apostles). The key is "on earth." Your response is a typical legalistic argument to not have to submit to any authority. But Christ is clear that he's the head of the church in the ultimate sense, but he still uses his earthly leaders to guide it and build it. It was the point in Christ telling Peter that He would start to build his church on Peter's leadership (Matt 16:18). Paul was the head of the churches he planted, so were the other apostles that planted.

I choose to look up love of God scriptures. Fear usually comes from Satan. Yes dont let men rule how you think or act. Thats what the media does to get the attention they crave. God definately is interested in our souls because He created them so we could love worship and have a relationship with Him through His only begotten son Yeshua. The veil in the temple was torn at the crucifixion to open that doorway to God so the only high priest we need is Yeshua. The media would like to find fault in every Christian church out there. The pastors are all sinners just like Carl and all of us but guess what those are the ones Yeshua loved on the most when He was here. He looks at the heart. Anyone that puts any pastor on a special pedestal needs to quit. That is a form of idol worship that most don't deserve or want. They are just doing what THEY feel God called them to do whether He did or didn't. I think most try to do their best but it is the Holy Spirit that touches people and brings them to God not any person.

In any institution, which includes churches as well as schools etc. any allegations of child sexual abuse must be reported to police. Even if the "victim" does not want it reported. The reason for that is that others may have been abused also, so the investigation has to assume that. And it is often the case that others are involved. This was not only an allegation, but his father admitted to the offending. Houston has admitted publicly that he did not report his father, but did have him removed from his position. Regardless of all that, it was also a huge conflict of interest that Houston made the decisions about his father, when his father was the alleged person, and proven perpetrator. Totally unacceptable. Brian Houston should have stayed right out of it. All he wanted was to protect the name of the church. And he failed, even if years later it all comes out. If police did not think they had a case, they would not have charged him. There is more to it that the media either choose not to report, or have to be careful with at this stage.

I think pastors and church leaders "crack under pressure" because it is a "one man system" led from the front, while the passive congregation listen. The New Testament cites an "all-body ministry" made up of pastors, prophets, teachers, evamgelists, etc. They are not meant to be carried out by ONE PERSON, which is why they get burnt out. A pastor is not a teacher and vice versa. They are two separate roles. Pastors are pastoral and care for the flock such as visiting and counselling etc, but a teacher is responsible for the promulgation of Bible reading and sound doctrine. If the two roles overlap (as in many denominational churches) then the concentration on one role will be diluted and compromised. The answer to all these 'failures' is in the Bible!

‘You shall know them by their fruits. Any tree that does not produce fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” -Jesus. It’s called actions speak louder than words. He’s a leader of arguably millions and he only exudes wealth, fame, self-promotion, and culture centered messages. Nothing about his actions represented Jesus, the homeless counter culture pacifist that befriended the rejects and healed the sick. Jesus stated time after time after time that actions will always speak volumes more than words.

ive been hearing the controversy about the hillsong church and songs, but one time i knew a christian whom i am not closed with, and had a supernatural encounter with God, she wrote a comic about it and i read it just recently. as someone who also had an encounter with God long ago, i am very much convinced that he is not the author of confusion. and i understand that each on of us has a relationship with God and that is our biggest responsibility, keeping that relationship till the end. so i read one chapter about her being listless and laying on the bed, she played the hossana by hillsong, and then she saw angels on the door of her room singing along the song. and she said she's slept being assured, knowing she's in the presence of God.

@@michellec.7996 I agree the accusations are pretty horrible. But there were a numbers of things I don't like about this case. He had the woman who sent him nude pictures in 2017. He made a statement on that denying any involvement. But the other three women from the day spa in Atlanta made those accusations after he died. He can't defend himself. Anyways, the inquiry stated he was guilty, and that is a terrible thing he did. I don't like how his wife was evicted from her home this week. His daughter and the rest of his family are also getting dumped on when they were not part of these accusations. My family were just discussing this tonight. Ravi Zacharias, Benny Hinn, Hillsong and other ministries have been in the news lately. It doesn't make be believe any less. The point I was making is it proves to me even people at the top are sinners. Doesn't excuse it. But it is part of human nature that people sin. In this case of Ravi, it was a shock to me. I saw him three years ago when he came to my mother's church. I even bought two of his books. It is hard to reconcile when seemingly good people do bad things like this. Fortunately no controversy in my church with leadership.

And how insulting to re-victimize those that HAVE reported abuses only to be hushed. Same response to his father's accusers. Anything to maintain your image. Lol, I think he meant it more as, as a Christian in general, your thoughts on a situation may not always be perfectly aligned with what the Bible says, which makes sense because we are all imperfect and fall short of the glory of God. However, He represents a Truth greater than his own mindset (which is influenced by the world since he's still human), and as a pastor, it's his responsibility to preach the surpassing righteousness of God's truth, even when he can't fully understand it all.

I believe as a church gets bigger and more popular, this can often go to the pastors head. The spirit of arrogance takes over, and these pastors start to think they are celebrities and they take their eyes off of Jesus and what they church is meant to represent.
I left my last church 3yr ago because of the way the pastor treated me and many other people. That pastor is now on the verge of losing his job because of scandal that has recently come to surface. These people forget who God is

A quote that I keep with me while
I’m serving the Lord. The Lord doesn’t say to us, “Good and famous servant” he says to us “Good and faithful servant”. We are all the same in the Lords eyes when it comes to serving we have to come under authority of our Pastors and Leaders. Everyone is welcomed. No famous people should be acknowledged in the church only the leaders that are sold out and serving Jesus whole heartedly and faithfully that’s who Jesus will
Come back to take when he returns to rapture us. Jesus is very near.

This is sadly a sober reminder of man's weakness and fragility...the ultimate focus is our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ. Not celebrities, not popularity, this is a race of endurance, not the fitness or the strongest.
Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 1 Corinthians 1:26.
    Confess your sins.
    Remain humble.
Focus on Christ the author and finisher of our faith and
Continue to pray for the church.

As the director of men's ministries at a large church for 20 years, I can tell you that I spoke with more men about this problem than most people realize. This included a fair amount of pastors who became involved in the same problem that hurt their churches and almost destroyed the church's ministry. We are all human and we all sin, which is why Christ came and died on the cross for those who repent and turn to, or back to Him, and scripture is very clear on judging others. I discovered why it is so important for church leaders to establish accountability which would hopefully head off some of these problems. The churches ranged from the various mainline denominations to charismatic, to large and smaller independent ministries. What saddens me is the pastors and other "religious" leaders who have been posting reasons online why they no longer allow Bethel or Hillsong music in their churches any longer and they will go to great lengths (including taking videos of services and posting them online) to portray them in a negative manner. Instead of trying to bring down a ministry that has reached so many people that other churches have failed to reach, these people in positions of leadership who are throwing stones should be careful about judging and mostly about giving free advertising to the many people who are looking for an excuse to not attend ANY church. Look at the work and the people that were being reached prior to the scandal. If they were that concerned, these pastors and church leaders might have reached out to this ministry to see if they could do anything for them while the problem was being taken care of. Which is how most of these scandals are handled with most mainline denominational churches, instead of posting online. They instead are doing the work for those who are trying to bring down all ministries, and being in a position of leadership, they will be judged differently for their actions. Instead of fighting amongst each other, it is crucial in this day and age for churches to be working together and to look at the important issues that every church should be concerned with. Which is bringing people to having a personal relationship with Christ by grace through faith and not through works (Ephesians 2:8-9). When He walked this earth, we read in scripture that the only people Christ criticized and openly spoke out against were the religious leaders of that day who were threatened by Him, which is the same type of legalism that has become too prevalent within the body of Christ today. Jesus was more concerned with the one person who didn't know Him and came to HIm than the 99 "righteous" people (the Pharisees) who were trying to bring down His ministry and worked to keep people from coming to Him. In today's world, it is more important than ever for the body of Christ to be working together and be reaching out to those ministries who are going through a period of trouble, instead of working to destroy them.

Ive just been led recently to stay away from her basically. plus, things are real good for me, shes missing her hair, her teeth have all fallen out - not kidding - her health is falling quickly, her finances are a mess & shes miserable. Maybe if you start obeying God and defending him like you do trump and start fellow shipping instead of comparing & coveting your neighbors mind, God would bless her too. quick lesson, God doesn't reward the wicked. And the heart IS WICKED. thats why we need Jesus Christ!!

No problem, just tell them “no one is perfect” and there you go. Instant absolution. No wonder people like this Christianity thing, you can do literally anything and no one will ever hold you responsible for it IF you appeal to the basic tenet of the religion which is “you are all terrible people” . You escape accountability for your flaws while you go about judging others, like gays and transgendered people for what you mistakenly assume is their “flaw” . What a mess these people are.

Jesus said "be ye perfect as your father is perfect" in Matthew 5 so why are we not striving to hit the bulls eye? Because of churches like hillsong who teach baby Christians to believe its ok to remain in their sin. NO! Jesus's first ministry was repentance! Are we forgetting that God is sovereign?
