  • In this video I'll be taking you through the steps for making your very own sourdough hot dog buns! The sourdough is not essential for this recipe but I find it adds a great flavour to the buns.
    Ingredients:
    Sourdough Starter: 120g
    Bread Flour (high protein): 480g
    Water: 270g
    Dry Yeast: 3.5g (1 1/4 tsp)
    Sugar: 70g
    Vegetable Oil: 25g
    Salt: 9.5g
    Directions:
Combine all the ingredients into the bowl of a stand mixers, and mix on medium high for about 7 minutes or until the dough passes the windowpane test.
Transfer into a lightly greased bowl, and cover with plastic wrap. Leave at room temperate.
After 30 minutes, stretch and fold the dough onto it's self and place back into the bowl for another hour.
Take the dough, and shape into hot dog buns, then placing onto a baking sheet lined with a silpat or baking paper.
After the hot dog bun dough has nearly doubled, place into the center of a 375f (190c) oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
Let cool on a wire rack for 30 minutes before cutting into them.

I made these a few weeks ago and my family loved them. I’m using the same recipe for hamburger buns today! Thanks for the recipe!

Is your sourdough starter at room temp or could it be discard from the fridge?

Where did you get your tubs. I can't find them in the right size.

I don't use seed oils, will melted butter work?

you say 7 min on med to med hi. Kitchen aids have numbers. So is that like 2, 3 or 4? and mine never is ready in 7 min for sourdough bread.

My kitchen-aid has speeds of 2,4,6,8 and 10 so the medium - medium high speed is a speed of 6 or 8.
Your dough may need a bit more time, but I would suggest testing it with the 'windowpane test' - though I've found 7 minutes is typically enough at those speeds
