There has been a supercar and hypercar arms race over the past few years, I am glad to see that Lotus is not jumping on the bandwagon. I think we need more smaller, simpler, useable cars like the Emira and Alpine A110. Having a few more options would be great, especially if you design them to be either gas or electric powered.

Well Volvo haven't looked back since the disastrous days under Ford ownership and it looks like Geely might be about to prove it isn't a fluke as the Emira looks stunning. I love that the car looks incredible but without resorting to random slashes, folds or grills large enough to give a basking shark a scare. Surely the mark of good design is when it just looks right - and this really does. Great job Lotus.

That’s because Geely has been historically making cars that revolutionized the world. No.

Geely gave them the funds and let Lotus build their own car which was the right things to do. They don't actually fully own Lotus though, just have the largest share at 51%.
I think the SUV will also be built in China (as well as the UK) though, which is going to rake in the cash from the sheeple to allow them to make more real Lotuses.

    • @craigo2656

Lotus are being artificially kept alive in order for China to use their brand to infiltrate the UK and western economy. It will eventually move everything to China once it has built a big enough following and its ownership is accepted. All production and eventually engineering and design will move to China. It will slowly suck out all of the knowledge at Lotus and feed this to Chinese engineers and designers. This is a common Chinese play book and you are all being played. This tactic is being engaged across every industrial sector and will eventually drain away all economic advantage from the west. You will all eventually loose your jobs, or have basic jobs with low wages that service Chinese companies in your country. The old Lotus saying of “Simplify, then add lightness” is totally lost on modern sports car buyers. Lotus HAVE to add all the electric seats and mod cons as thats what buyers expect, but make no doubt about it. There will 100% be a track version, it'll be godly, and nobody will buy it. But they will buy this one as a full package it truly hits the bullseye.

    • @ianminter7822
      @ianminter7822 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Mark, I think you've hit the nail on the head. All these people bleating about the weight of the Emira are probably the same people who didn't buy the Elise, Exige or the Alpine A110. All three are wonderful cars that have a fairly limited appeal and have never sold in significant numbers. The reality is that most potential buyers want all the creature comforts and, as Porsche and Ferrari have proved, most of them don't want a manual transmission either. I count myself as an 'old-school' purist and love the lightweight ethos of Lotus, but the Emira will be far more popular than any previous Lotus. I suspect Lotus will produce a lightweight Emira if there's a real demand for one.

The weight comes from it being a GT car like the Evora, it probably has a normal amount of sound dampening which is heavy. Elise had none and things like the wishbones being mounted directly to the chassis like a racing car to save even more weight (at the cost of road noise and comfort).

I don't think it'll be awful. Just because no one has made a loud ass production electric car doesn't mean it can't be done. Like, have you ever been on an old electric streetcar from the 80's or earlier? Like the ones they have in Eastern Europe? Those things are loud as hell under acceleration. But, they're not going to be awful.... at all...... Sound is only one of many parts of driving, and yeah sure, in some aspects it's a big part of it, but it's far from all of the experience. Electric cars will be able to bring monumental changes and upgrades to handling and vehicle dynamics that would never be possible in an ICE car. Things such as a lower and more controllable center of gravity, fully decoupled torque vectoring, completely instantaneous torque, 6-7-800+ horsepower "by default", fully adjustable and customizable throttle maps, etc etc etc is going to completely transform driving for the better. And if you're so genuinely worried about the sound, have a look and listen at the Porsche Mission R, that car is completely bonkers and sounds super aggressive, I might even go as far as to say it sounds quite good for actually being an electric car. We lose one part of driving, sure, but we gain in almost every single other area there is.

2003 111S here, newly acquired but it has got me hooked like nothing else I´ve driven. The thing that intrigues me is that, unlike most people who say it´s amazing in spite of the impractibility, I seriously feel the harsh ride, crazy ingress & egress acrobatics and raw interior all combine in a total attack on your senses. It removes you completely from the mundane and boring, which are 99% of all other cars in comparison. Easy and comfortable are not memorable. The Elise forces you to learn almost everything about itself so that it will shine for you, from the skill it takes to master it to understanding why you don´t drive it hard until the engine is nice and warm. There are rewards for getting good at new things and the Elise offers no shortcuts.
      Never selling it.

@@devandrasimanjuntak1646 you’re absolutely right about the weight, but you forget the iconic supercharged V6 sound which the Exige had as well. The reason why you buy a lotus is because you love driving. For me, engine noise makes up a big portion of that.

@@sean-yt8bm I like the ethos of the A110. The light weight design has so many benefits that just keep adding up. It's 300kg lighter than the Emira which is like a car full of people, we all know what that feels like. The engine note is great for a 4 cylinder and 300bhp is about as much as you can put down on a public road. They've geared the A110 so that it hits 60 mph in 3rd gear instead of 2nd which impacted the 0-62 time but in the real world, is perfect for B roads.

It's quite unfortunate that this might well be the last internal combustion powered Lotus, at least for some time. I don't expect it to be, but it'll take some time for the next one to come out. And to see the company do a near-180 and go from designing the world's greatest twin pair of track focused sports cars, the Exige and Elise, to designing electric SUVs, I personally find quite sad. It definitely goes against what Lotus stood for until now and has (mostly) stood for in the past, the Spirit of Colin Chapman has undeniably died along with the Elise and Exige.

Also hocked the Lotus badge on to anything that would make him money. It’s romantic idea that he would have stuck to some kind of ethos. The reality is he would moved to where the customers are. Today I drove on a suburban street route, 45mph limit the V6 / 6-speed Emira at Gator Motorsports in Indianapolis, a loaded First Edition car. The red/black car I drove is one of about six touring the US available to drive by those with $2500 deposits in place.
Photos on the Lotus website and in other articles/blogs do not do its appearance justice. Its proportions are perfect and largely original. I’m a designer, always looking for trouble and found none with its shapes, proportions, detail. And remember, it’s said to weigh about 3200 pounds and is a much more useable size than, for example, a C8 Corvette; it’s in the Cayman scale.
The engine has a very ready power-band and sounds great in the more “open pipe” mode. No problem with it being Toyota sourced.
The controls come to hand easily and the steering column adjusts in/out, up/down readily. The seat seems excellent though I was not in a side force driving situation. My current drives are an E Type Jaguar and a late Honda S2000 so I am into driver involved cars and care nothing for digital dashes or infotainment so that will take some getting used to. The road ahead, motor, the trans, brakes and the steering wheel are what I am paying attention to, only. Steering accuracy is all one could ask for and the car tracks with directness regardless of crappy Indiana roads. This car was equipped the sport suspension, Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and was quiet and smooth. (Lotsa drama about this being a noisy track tire. I love them and the 4’s on my Honda as well.)
This Lotus is what a sports car should be, and we have fewer to choose from with each passing year.
If you’ve looked at the Lotus website, you know this car ain’t cheap, and there are a few good options in the price range, but it’s a Lotus and has an internal combustion engine!
Availability of these cars is a ways off, Spring 2023, maybe, even for folks with a deposit in place for six months, like me. But if you happen to be within an hour or two of Indy, Gator looks like a great shop to buy from, have tuning work done. The main guy, Tony, is knowledgable and focused on DRIVERS, the only people who deserve to own Lotuses!

I am a big Lotus fan. Evora and Elise would be the ultimate track focused upgrade from my 987.2 Cayman and NC3 MX5.
But the GTS 4.0L is still my dream car.
I really like the Emira. But I feel like the Cayman can still be your only car if you don't have any kids. The Cayman has a lot of storage space and weighs less. Emira is more like your third car (similar to the ALFA 4C). But its too risky for the enthusiasts that's stretching his/her budget. The car is very much in the rich persons crowd. Its a toy. Where as with a Porsche, you can be an above average income earner and have it as your only car and generally get into one without much risk.
As for looks. I like the subtle look of the Cayman. But if you want attention, get the Emira.
Respect to anyone who becomes an early adopter. But with the tiny dealer network, general long wait time on parts. Unless I was very wealthy. I would still choose the Cayman.

@@ImBarryScottCSS Yep agreed. I daily my 987.2 Cayman. The front and year storage areas are huge compared to all of its rivals. I know the Emira has a small shelf behind the seats. But its a shame they couldn't get something in the front. The Emira will sell well, anything remotely decent will in the current market.
However if this car was released at the same time as the Alpine and 4C. I would suspect the sales wouldn't be as impressive. The Cayman or C8 is just a safer purchase for the average bloke who is looking to scrounge money up to buy a sports car, but wants something a bit more special then a MX5, 86, Mustang or 370z. I really wish Lotus was more successful and had a bigger dealer/service/parts/support network similar to Porsche.

These are all great points and as awesome as the car is it is not close in price to a supra or m2. Those are around $60k whereas this is north of $100k not to mention the projected $30-40k markup from some reputable sources. It will have to be awesome to live up that price tag, it sure has the styling to live up to it though.

But the Emira has that European luxury/exotic look and feel, is a lot lighter weight, and is looks amazing to drive.
