Please, show me what you mean by "point of new growth"! All I see is Mr. Reeves cutting, but, being totally ignorant about gardening myself, I cannot tell how he is choosing his "ideal" cutting point. Help! Thanks.

Federica Clementi I think he means at the nodes where there are other buds or branches.

Points of new growth are the nodes where you get branching and new buds next to where the tall branch is, like he said its where the new growth is and where it will continue from. If you have a tall branch you dont cut it halfway up it since new growth will not hide the cut and it will just look bad.

@@LegendLength yeah that's what I mean, I just did a poor job explaining it.

@@janebadon3988 Follow a long/tall shoot all the way down until you start to see branches sprawling outwards. Right above this point is where you would want to "top" your Azaleas. This encourages bushier, healthier growth for plants in general

I have some azaleas that are over 70 years old and HUGE! Do we trim them the same way? I would like them down to 3-4' tall

Yes, do a selective trim exactly as shown. In your case with such old azaleas size of actual branches may necessitate a heavier tool, but whatever tool is used just make sure it's sharp. A sharp blade not only prevents splintering, but reduces risk of disease. Also, leave a little room between cuts and main growth this allows for proper healing. One last important note and this applies to all trees and shrubs. Nothing is worse than peeling away a large section of bark. To prevent this, always cut heavier branches twice. In other words get rid of the weight before making final cut.

If you have azaleas around your home, you know what beauty they can add to the landscape. But you might not be sure of the best time and method to prune them. Georgia Gardener Walter Reeves has all you need to know about keeping the plants healthy and well groomed.
