Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith - In The Studio

  • The electronic composer invites us to her LA home for an intimate performance.
Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith has become one of the most fascinating champions of modular synthesis in recent memory - but she didn’t start out that way.
Raised on Orcas Island in northwest Washington state and classically trained in guitar and piano, Smith spent a curiosity-fueled year teaching herself synthesis after a serendipitous encounter with the Buchla Music Easel, an instrument that’s come to define her as much as she has defined it.
Her explorations in synthesis reach an apex on her stunning new album EARS, out April 1 on Western Vinyl, blending woodwind and her own vocals with the primordial sounds of the Buchla to make her most definitive statement yet.
After recently relocating to Los Angeles, Smith invited FACT to her home studio where she showed us the different synthesizer voices used to create her modular symphonies before churning them together in a spontaneous improvisation.
The intimate home performance serves as a taster for her show on April 1 at Rewire Festival in the Hague, Netherlands, where she’ll play the city’s Lutheran Church with Chris Watson and Kara-Lis Coverdale + MFO.

@@kentsparling8222 I think your comment is a bit over the top.. what´s wrong with him expressing that he likes her from what he sees from this video? Sure it may not be her entire personality, but it wasn´t meant "to reduce her" either. Literally the whole music artist/fan relationship would be "incredibly disrespectful" then, and while I agree that an artist is to an degree always just an image of the fans´ imagination and projections, it´s far from disrespectful, and I think the artists would agree and not be so easily offended like you were. It was just an sponateous expression of admiration, while you made it a problem, and I even made it worse with this long text ;) peace

Someone needs to create a eurorack-compatible high-power vacuum cleaner with soft-bristle brush nozzle and long hose for getting between cable spaghetti, deep in keyboard keys and jack sockets; maybe a special nozzle that is a soft brush but when you push down on it a 3.5mm jack sucker protrudes. Venting of dust could also be modular, with choice of bag-compatible module or a hose output for more permanent installations, so you could route dust output -> window. Ideally you'd have a magnetic robotic crawler to keep things dust-free automatically, but I don't want to get too ambitious.

As a hobby-guitarist, who has a half-stack in his living room, and also some keyboards, samplers and sound-modules in my home-studio, and just getting interested in modular synthesist, i can relate to the "bleepy bloop style" sounds she's talking about, as that's what it seems that i hear in almost every video, after watching countless of hours of YT content on that topic.. There are hardly ever any full songs.
By now i think that modular synthesis is just here for those people that think a crack- or heroin-addiction has too much impact on their bodies, but rather want to spend all that money (or more) on things that basically go "beep" in different ways.
Then again, next to my house being full of "conventional" music equipment, I shouldn't be talking, i spent over 20k on a telescope, ccd-cameras, filters and mount for doing astrophotography, but because i live in the Netherlands i can use it maybe once or twice a year.. .if even... also a bottomless pit, but at least it keeps me from being able to afford a drug-addiction, despite having a good salary ;)
