This leads to the production of autoantibodies, proteins that target tissues and organs, causing damage. This condition can affect almost any organ in the body, resulting in a wide range of symptoms.

Muscle and joint pain are prevalent in lupus, affecting areas such as the neck, thighs, shoulders, and upper arms. Joint problems, categorized as lupus arthritis, can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling in joints like fingers, wrists, elbows, knees, ankles, and toes. Additionally, inflammation in tendons (tendonitis) and unusual looseness in connecting tissues (tendon laxity) are common lupus-related issues.
Lupus can also impact muscles, leading to myalgia (aches and pains) or myositis (muscle inflammation), typically in the hips, thighs, shoulders, and upper arms. Muscle weakness is a common symptom of lupus myositis, affecting daily activities like standing up or raising arms.
Fever, often low-grade, can be an early sign of lupus, indicating inflammation, infection, or an impending flare-up. Skin manifestations include rashes, with the distinctive butterfly-shaped rash across the nose and cheeks being a hallmark of lupus.
Lupus extends its influence to the respiratory system, causing pleurisy (inflammation of the lung lining) and potential scarring that results in shortness of breath. Additionally, lupus can inflame the heart or its surrounding sac, causing chest pain.
Hair and nail problems are also common in lupus, with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) causing dry, coarse hair and various types of hair loss. Nail changes include cracking, discoloration, and swelling around the nails. In cases of discoid lupus, hair loss may be permanent, leading to scarring.
Lupus nephritis, affecting half of lupus patients, involves kidney problems where autoantibodies affect kidney function, leading to symptoms like blood in the urine, foamy urine, high blood pressure, and swelling in the legs, ankles, hands, and face.
Mouth sores, both associated with active disease and as a reaction to medication, are common in lupus. Prolonged or extreme fatigue is a prevalent and often debilitating symptom, affecting daily life even with sufficient rest.
Ear symptoms, including hearing loss, tinnitus, and dizziness, can be early signs of lupus. Anemia is prevalent in about 50% of people with lupus, often resulting from inflammation hindering iron utilization. Cognitive symptoms, referred to as "brain fog" or "lupus fog," can affect thinking, memory, and concentration in 70-80% of people with lupus.
Lupus increases the risk of blood clotting, potentially leading to clots in the legs or lungs, stroke, heart attack, or repeated miscarriages. Headaches, including migraine-like headaches, are common in lupus, affecting around 70% of individuals.
Eye-related complications include changes in the skin around the eyelids, dry eyes, inflammation of the outer eyeball layer, retinal vasculisits, and damage to nerves controlling eye movement. Symptoms range from irritated or burning eyes to blurry vision and eye pain.
