I have a 2003 2.5 X and I agree, the clutch is a pain, but once you get going it's alright. I usually avoid inclines where possible. My grandfather put 320k miles on his 1998 Forester with every fuel refill logged in a hand written notebook and it's still running.

Second gen, 03-08, this is an 05, so pre facelift.
I like these, and this is what I'd drive, but instead have it in an automatic.
    This is perfect.
    Great video.

I have a 07 facelift manual and the clutch on ours is stiff too. It used to have a dual mass flywheel but when we replaced the clutch we put in a standard flywheel and it’s just really stiff

I have a 2013,5 speed . The hydraulic clutch takes time to get the hang of. It feels mushy and yes your correct, small movements will engage quickly. It's not stiff to push though. Comfortable, safe fantastic visibility. Too bad the new ones are automatic only.

I'm hoping to buy an '05 XT, so hopefully this video helps down the road. Thanks!🙏🏾
