    I agree the iPhone is so much closer now. Last year I liked 90% of the shots from the pixel over the iPhone. This year its more like 75%. Pixel is still the king but if they do add an extra camera than all I can say is good luck apple on catching up again. Btw the top 3 list of cameras on the phone will stay the same for pretty much forever it feels like. Google, iPhone, and Samsung will always be in the top 3 in no particular order. This also goes for the best phones in general.

    Personally, as someone who does photography as a hobby, the dynamic range is better on the iPhone XS making for better fine tuning in post. So like Rob said, if you want great shots right out of the camera the Pixel 3 does that and it admittedly does look great. However if you like to edit photos in VSCO or Lightroom then the XS's dynamic range will have you satisfied.

    The pixel is sharper for sure in some scenarios, and has a higher colour saturation too .. I personally like that, but if I went with an iPhone, I’d just do a quick edit and reach the exact same result .. no biggie !
    So it really boils down to which ecosystem you’re invested in.. Fantastic both of them! I’m sure software updates will up the game further !

    iPhone photos are flatter, but pixel 3 photos look like the software edited it. While the pixel 3 looks better right away, it loses detail in stuff such as the shadows. With the iPhone, if you are willing to take the time to edit each photo, has much more options, since flatter images retain more detail. For instance, I was able to take the iPhone photo of the flower, and make it look very similar to the pixel photo (using the editing feature in google photos).

    • @pjeverly
      @pjeverly 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I disagree about about the lack of editing options with the Pixel. And I thought the point of a smart phone camera was to take great pictures, not good pictures that you can edit into great ones. That's my personal opinion. In fairness, the 2018 camera phones are all outstanding so we are really nit picking. But it's still fun to compare.

    • @peterxiong3367

      Damehuri AD shadows on the pixel are darker, making it look better, but it loses some detail

    • @peterxiong3367
      @peterxiong3367 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Jason Everly It's all personal preference. I'd personally want my photo to look good right off the bat, and i did not say pixel photos don't have good editing options. I even said I edited my photos using the Google photos app. I'm saying that while it's easy to edit a photo, it is hard to undo those edits. To be fair, you can take raw photos on the pixel that will allow you a wide range of options for editing, but then the photos will require editing to look good.

    • @SCtester
      @SCtester 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Exactly. On the Pixel, it's a one way thing - you can't get that detail back, and you can't reverse the over sharpening it does in a lot of images. On the iPhone, you have the choice - if you like a contrasted look, it's really easy to crank up that contrast or clarity, but you can't do it the other way around.

      @Swift Boiz Swift Boiz I guess washed out is the wrong term to use. Maybe flat? Because the iPhone brightens the dark areas up so you can see it when irl they're pretty dark.
      And overexposure: I will say it's TONS better than last year's iPhone X from what I've seen. But look at the car picture. There's a hazed look and a lot more glow from the sunlight outside the car. Or the pic with the neon lights. There's a lot more glow to it on the Xs.
      It's really it's all about preference. Neither one can beat a DSLR lol. Note 9, Xs, 3xl... They are all great cameras with their strengths and weaknesses.

      Can you say biased? The pics on the IPhone are more washed out. I have an XS and it takes beautiful photos but these images the Pixel clearly produced more real to life images. The IPhone video mode is clearly in favor of the IPhone, which is the main reason I cancelled my Pixel preorder and picked an IPhone XS up. I just wish I could change the settings in the actual camera app though.......

  • @thecooljohn100
    @thecooljohn100 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I prefer the XS because it tends to capture a more neutral, true to life photo rather than how the Pixel will throw more color, more contrast, more sharpness without giving you much of a choice. Yeah sometimes the photos will look better, but I prefer getting more of a blank slate to edit if I want to than having software decide how I want my photos to look. Apple gives plenty of tools, and I'm sure Google does too, to edit photos in the app however you want and even has some default filters to choose from. I prefer letting the filters add effects over the default camera settings doing whatever they want.

      @thecooljohn100 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chet Patel I did listen to the video but I don't agree with his analysis. I mean if you pay attention to the comparisons the Pixel always has more color, darker shadows, sharper edges. Not to mention I just recently got my XS Max and have been testing out the camera here and there and noticed about the same results. The iPhone is subtle in it's processing, it doesn't work to completely change the way your pictures look from the original snapshot like the Pixel does in this video and others like it.

      Chet Patel Considering I can watch the video, see what he took a picture of, see the photo from both phones with my own two eyes... Yes...? I have a pixel 2 and I compared the pics with an iPhone XS and mine is still better :/ XS blasts colors and overexposes pics but admittedly they have improved. What is underrated about the pixel is how it adjusts to the amount of light present and maintain shadows appropriately preventing overexposure. XS max under bright light takes pics that gimme a headache. :(

  • @fish9468

    you said the hdr was more agressive on the XS, but its more on the pixel 3. HDR means HIGH dynamic range, which means deeper black and brighter whites, without clipping, which the pixel did better in the vines picture.

  • @47crazed
    @47crazed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    HDR is very important. The video is always mentioning that the iphone is lacking of shadows and contrast, you can easly fix that by editing the photo. on the Pixel, you can't recover any details on the shadow if it's already dark. what i don't like about the New iphones are the color accuracy and white balance..it's becoming like a samsung phone.

    • @Ignacio.Romero

    • @MacXpert74
      @MacXpert74 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Ignacio Romero No, when shadows are 'crushed' you can't get the information back in 8-bit images. Only if you'd shoot everything in RAW mode, you could do something. But a flatter image on the other hand is much easier to give extra contrast to your liking.

    • @paulxiong5057
      @paulxiong5057 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can set the Pixel 3 to shoot in RAW all the time. I'm pretty sure the video is just showing the JPEG composite the two phones shoot. The JPEG algorithm the Pixel has just shoots with a higher contrast and is for use as an already good looking picture for the "average consumer". Seeing that you're not an "average consumer", a person with the knowledge to edit, this video may not be intended for you. I want to see the Pixel's RAW picture files before we start talking about editing.

I do the same in Photoshop and there's a line where it just becomes a bit fake. True life will be darker and the algorithm should be tuned down.
