      Modern Aging - Holistic Health and Wealth After 50 : I have heard of the Blue Zones, but I don’t know where they all are. I will have to do some research.
      I turned 52 last month, and my biggest issues are stress and lack of motivation. Stress will destroy one’s health like nothing else. I am trying to figure out ways to handle stress better, and to encourage myself to be more active outdoors. I have beautiful yards and I do much to tend them, but it is not a daily thing. As the mother of 6, the majority of my life has been raising my children, and that is the best work I have ever known.
      My youngest is in her first year of high school and now the only one at home.
      Adjusting to the different seasons life brings is not so easy sometimes.
      I enjoyed your video and have just subbed. *Thank you* for your tips and advice.

    My friend is vegetarian and at 42 she looks 22, and more importantly she feels 22. Her outlook is so positive, and she cheers me up. I think another thing about diet, especially as we age, is to cut out sugar, and all kinds of it. Minimize fruit even, and instead move toward vegetables with bean dips. Mash up some white fava, add a little olive oil and salt--get the carrots and celery going, the bell peppers, or better yet rhubarb stalks (don't be afraid of the tartness, and remember not to eat the leaves, as they are poisonous). Definitely avoid ALL cane juice products. Drink a ton of water, and if you want to flavor it, go with lemon. The reminder to do "desk exercise" is great too, especially squats, holding on to the edge of the desk. Awesome.

    Connect with nature more. Go to a place of solitude (into a corner of garden, forest or something like that) and spent at least 1-2 hours per week there without any disturbance. At least walk for 20-30 minutes per day with bare foot, which would physically connect you to mother earth. Do fasting even without water at least twice a month (preferably on the 11th day of every lunar fortnight). Try to finish your dinner before sunset, but if that's not possible then make it max by 8PM in the night.

    Im mostly vegetarian although i do eat meat several times a week. Im 54 and retired, and have been gardening since age 49 so i grow my own food. Okinawa is just a hop skip and a jump away from me (Philippines). That active, healthy, rural life almost gives you a second life. Everyone should do it after beating our bodies up during our careers!

    Thanks for your video, it is very uplifting. I'm 55, turning 56 in 3 months, and I am on a heavy side, but it didnt stop me from exercising, like running, biking and mountain climbing. I may not have the speed, but a continuous and regular exercise does give me the endurance to keep going. I'm just slightly conscious of eating healthy, but I try to make sure I eat in moderation...

    There are virtually no vegetarians in Japan (outside monasteries). People eat fish, practically every day, often twice a day. Fish eating is one thing blue zones have in common.

I had gallstones before being vegan. So now I am trying to work into a healthy plant base diet. So thank you for the inspiration.

    When you say vegetarian do you include eggs or dairy or no animal products at all like vegan?

    • @ModernAging
      @ModernAging  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For some, vegan diets work really well and that's great especially if you have some food allergies. Since people are all different, it is hard to make a blanket statement as to what is best. That being said, incorporating mostly fresh vegetables and reducing meat products in your diet will help a lot. I do recommend reducing dairy (from a cow) as well -- and there are lots of alternatives on the market now which is great.

    • @blasiangoddess9831
      @blasiangoddess9831 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have to highly disagree with you. I was an ex vegan for 5 years, and my health deteriorated on eating a only vegan whole foods diet. It wasn’t after I started incorporating good quality animal foods back into my diet, that my teeth and health started to heal. We need animal foods in our diet to be optimally healthy overall. The people of Okinawa eat plenty of meat too! Also, since when have our ancestors we’re ever Vegan? I don’t recall such nonsense and don’t recommend the vegan diet long term.

    • @francisleroy6215
      @francisleroy6215 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@blasiangoddess9831 - you have a nerve, acting as though you represent everyone - the arrogance! A vegan diet works for me, and while others a vegetarian, or even a flexitarian diet can be better. Whatever, eating meat everyday is a proven folly. Treatment: Try a little evidence based thinking in your life, and slow down a little on the fundamentalism....Cheers...

    I so agree with the observation that turning 60 really changes the body and that we feel our mortality, and that it INVIGORATES us! Well put! I've been vegetarian a long, long time - but never ever want to be vegan, lol. It's easy for me to get moving in the morning, but WAY harder in the early evening - so that's something I need to work on. I've also just started a local group where we get together a couple of times a month, so the loner in me is forcing myself into occasional social groups! Thanks for this video!

    They don't normally mention the Okinawans eat lots of pork and they live far enough away that most people don't know any better. I believe the reason why Buettner gets it wrong is not because of a deliberate attempt to deceive, but more likely its another example of what happens when we look at the world through the current medical dietary dogma. After all, if you believe that meat and animal fats are bad for you, then by default you wouldn’t list them as contributors to longevity. Which is a shame because people might continue to be misinformed

      Hmm. I always wondered of it was just their genes.

    • @CK-ij6rx
      @CK-ij6rx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it is all genetics. Genetics play a big part, yes, but I think it is many things combined. These people may be able to get away with smoking because they live in an area with fresher air and their bodies can heal more because of less stress and exercise. People should not compare the meat and cheese that they eat in America to the meat and cheese that the people in Blue zones eat. Their cheese is usually not from the mass produced cows in America, it us Sheep's milk that is high in omega 3's and not pasteurized like dairy products in America. The difference is their overall quality of food. The meat, eggs, cheese, wine, are all better quality. Their bodies can handle things better because of their overall health. An American will probably not have the same results. They would definitely need genetics on their side.
