As an Indian, I can verify that Anand's contribution and impact on Indian Chess is unprecedented. His own city of Chennai now has >30 GMs (mostly kids and youth). A whole generation grew up watching him. He is also a very polite and kindhearted man, contrary to the champions that came before him.
@@kanekiNamikaze Well, I am not taking away from Gukesh's achievement, but this is more because Anand isn't playing lol. I bet Anand could beat Gukesh in a classical match right now. But the good thing is that Gukesh seems to be only getting stronger with time.
People always find something negative in everything. Why can't it be real respect for Anand? Everything Hikaru says seems legit about Anand. Plus he doesn't need to attract Indian audience.
Selim Yıldız So you honestly think Hikaru, the chess prodigy and arguably one of the best blitz player in the world, will put his reputation on the line and lie about how great Anand was just so he can gain more TH-cam viewers? Sit down.

I'm Indian now migrated abroad, I did not understand the totality of how much Anand contributed to Chess on and off the board. This is just incredible, thank you Hikaru. I love your streams and congrats on being World Champ!!
One thing I can say for Anand (I'm from India) is that he broke into the ranks when the erstwhile Russia/USSR was still THE dominant force in Chess. When I read about how Russian players had a thriving ecosystem that helped them learn, compete and rise up the ranks, Anand's access to tournaments, sponsorships, and strong players (to learn from) was in a much-diminished quality and quantity. (It brings a smile whenever I think that he had to frequent the Tal Chess Club in the Russian embassy in Chennai to improve his game). This to me justifies his ranking 100%.

Rewatching these old Levy and Hikaru videos. They were all so good, hope they do stuff again someday. I was so happy Hikaru rated Anand so highly, that guy is really something else. Even now he's still playing at the top level, in his 50s! He's something else in every way.
@@prashant5229 I mean.. from what I've seen, a big ego is really something almost all Chess players that I've seen had in them. I don't know if the game itself forces that kind of behavior or trait, but all that aside, Hikaru is really humble if you watch his streams and compare his attitude to other big huge Chess personalities! His Japanese non-confrontational nature and slightly self-conscious behavior is apparent! So putting that in mind, I think he is really humble for a Chess phenomenon!
I know I am biased, don't mind if it is pandering, I LOVE what Hikaru said about Anand. Anand was the reason my dad got me into chess! 5 people in my school were IMs, many of them were inspired by and had met Anand!
“First, then, Paul Morphy was never so passionately fond, so inordinately devoted to chess as is generally believed. An intimate acquaintance and long observation enable us to state this positively. His only devotion to the game, if it may be so termed, lay in his ambition to meet and to defeat the best players and great masters of this country and of Europe. He felt his enormous strength, and never, for a moment, doubted the outcome. Indeed, before his first departure for Europe he privately and modestly, yet with perfect confidence, predicted to us his certain success, and when he returned he expressed the conviction that he had played poorly, rashly; that none of his opponents should have done so well as they did against him. But, this one ambition satisfied, he appeared to have lost nearly all interest in the game.” - Charles de Maurian
Norwegian here. I fully agree with Anand being a God of chess. I am proud of Carlsen, of course, but Anand deserves to be remembered as one of the greatest in chesshistory.
Carlsen? Thus far at a classical time control has only beaten an old, disinterested Anand, and Nepo having a nervous breakdown. That's it. Granted Carlsen beat Karjakin and Caruana at trivially short speed chess matches, but that's irrelevant towards deciding the World Chess Championship.
U know when i was kid i doesnt know about chess a single bit, but whenever someone say chess i just know only vishy anand for me he is inspirational, God of chess bcz at that time there are not so many coaches, books, and any other stuf in india, nowdays there is everything on internet,
And thus Indian chess pride was born. Nowadays there's always at least 1 Indian guy clashing pieces with you on a normal match. I wish the Philippines would have 1 too.( A world chess champion)
A note to the discussion at 37:40 ish. In India there are 1,3-1,4 billion people. In Norway there are 5 million. The tournaments are broadcasted live on TV.
It does not aactually work like that. Carlsen and one more guy is a gm on the norweigan chess team, while rest 3 are IMs. Anand may be 20 years older than carlsen, but they were world champions in a very close matter of time. Yes, Anand has played more experiencedly, but the Chess domination came in the last decade of 2010s. I agree to you on your last pointdeeply, without any argument. In conclusion, Anand can be compared to Botvinik perfectly, while Carlsen is one of a type.

@@ripcandice70 well that's the problem , rating wise he is absolutely no.1 in blitz but he's not a world champion , so I would put him in either legend or great + unlucky , but there's a small chance that hikaru could be in the god of chess
@@yashpandey3.3.3 Hikaru was talking about China, because Levy said Fabiano Caruana was the undisputed candidate for world champion. This disrespected the Chinese player Ding Liren, who Hikaru said was also a strong candidate. It's kinda funny tho, because recently half of Indonesia was out to get Levy for catching an Indonesian cheater. Look up Dewa Kipas for the story.
Levy seems salty to see Anand up there, these whites just want to see themselves above rest of others 😏 (same applies to Ding or any other asian player to be fair)
Capablanca was so good that Alekhine hired a Team of grandmasters to help him win the title, Changing the dynamic of the game ( at least its the first I have heard of someone doing that) his games are the greatest teaching tool around (for now and probably forever ), for those reasons I consider him a chess god. Euwe was Lucky that Alekhine was avoiding a rematch with Capablanca
Magnus is the first player in modern history that I feel treats chess more like sport and less like science. He plays these strange opening choices in order to capitalize on his own strengths as a player, rather than trying to find the theoretically "correct" or "best" opening, if that makes sense. And he is undoubtedly one of the greatest ambassadors of chess to ever live, second to maybe only Kasparov. No one can ever beat Kasparovs Deep Blue moment.
Capa played almost 100 years ago and still ranks top according to programs, that's a GOAT. Bobby super-inspiring but Karpov already had people wondering if Fischer would have retained 1st place the next year after his tragic retirement.
Take into consideration the fact that Bobby crushed the scene like no one else when he entered the chess world. I mean, how many times have you seen people going 6-0 against top players? He even mopped the frickin floor with then best player Spasky!!
Shamant he had a great run but it was waaay to short run, look at Kasparov, when he was 44 he was the world champion for half of his life, sure fisher was completely dominant, but he retained his title for three years before losing his marbles. He’s a #1 undisputed at best for breaking the Russian curse
@@xa-1274 I agree that kasparov was there to stay, but even he didn't completely outclass his opponents like Bobby did. Maybe(mostly) Fischer would lose against kasparov, but chess is a sport where you can't compare players from different times as it gets built on previous knowledge.
I live in a corner of the country of India and I still remember when I was just 10 years old and Aanand became the world champion. Only because of this Chess became a part of my childhood
6:35 when you’re trying to be serious about this particular form of death but your friend almost laughs out loud so you laugh as well and try to describe this form of death in a funnier manner because you know deep down that it’s funny until you realize your friend has already returned to being serious about this form of death and is no longer laughing so you return to act like you’re being serious about this form of death
Indeed. Yet very few people realizing that. He did the same thing when he started mentioning agadmator's channel, so that subscribers migrate to his channel.
Yeah, I have one of his books too. However, considering all the legends like Keres, Rubinstein etc who weren’t world champions, he’s a bit of a fluke world champion. He’s like the Greece of chess champions :)
@@Max-kv8uw funny enough, Anand very likely has their important games memorized. He also recites lines very fast when he theorizes, and so does Hikaru too so no wonder Hikaru enjoys Anands pontification of old games -- that's what I infer.
In the East maybe, but definitely Bobby Fischer in the West. Everyone knows Fischer, there’s three movies about him, which kinda says it all. Well, “Searching for Bobby Fischer” isn’t really about him, but it definitely counts.
I can’t even play chess (nor do I watch it at all - this video just popped up in my feed), but even I know just about everything about Anand’s career. He was/is absolutely massive in India.
I think you'd have to say Fabi and Hikaru are both in the "Great + Unlucky" because Magnus exists. Perhaps "Great + Lucky" should be lower than "Great + Unlucky".

But he’s not even undisputed no 1 in blitz tho?
@@ripcandice70 he is ranked 1 in blitz.
@@garry3465 but not the blitz world champion
@@ripcandice70 well that's the problem , rating wise he is absolutely no.1 in blitz but he's not a world champion , so I would put him in either legend or great + unlucky , but there's a small chance that hikaru could be in the god of chess
Hikaru said he doesn't know much about Akiba then proceeds to talk about him so much 😂😂
Kids offend people, legends like Levy offend countries 😂
Which country ??
this aged like fine wine
@@yashpandey3.3.3 Hikaru was talking about China, because Levy said Fabiano Caruana was the undisputed candidate for world champion. This disrespected the Chinese player Ding Liren, who Hikaru said was also a strong candidate. It's kinda funny tho, because recently half of Indonesia was out to get Levy for catching an Indonesian cheater. Look up Dewa Kipas for the story.
@@joelwilliamson3322 thanx for explanation☺️☺️
Levy seems salty to see Anand up there, these whites just want to see themselves above rest of others 😏 (same applies to Ding or any other asian player to be fair)
43:26 the irony in 2023 😂
Capablanca was so good that Alekhine hired a Team of grandmasters to help him win the title, Changing the dynamic of the game ( at least its the first I have heard of someone doing that) his games are the greatest teaching tool around (for now and probably forever ), for those reasons I consider him a chess god. Euwe was Lucky that Alekhine was avoiding a rematch with Capablanca
Hikaru : Anand got a country of Billion people interested in chess.
Also Hikaru/(His editor) : Puts Anand in the Thumbnail 😏
Magnus inspired me to enjoy chess more than anything. His apps helped a lot too. I am just a Magnus fanboy I guess.
That's definitely valid.
Tho i am not Indian but almost anyone would agree with me if I say he is easily in top 8 players of all time.
@@imafraidjumitebeeinnagang3886 i aint one either man xO I am a bangladeshi, I do fall in the same subcontinent tho
@@knightishraq Sherlock wireless network momentarily lost his connection there. xD
Bobby super-inspiring but Karpov already had people wondering if Fischer would have retained 1st place the next year after his tragic retirement.
indian player sultan khan defeated capablanca without prep
@@sunritroykarmakar4406 Sultan was so awesome, I think Reshevsky and him were the two saddest untapped potentials of chess
That's aweome they mentioned Agadmator.. if you enjoy watching chess analyse breaking down games, he's the man. been subbed for years.
I live in a corner of the country of India and I still remember when I was just 10 years old and Aanand became the world champion. Only because of this Chess became a part of my childhood
Alternative title: Chat typing PogO for 53 minutes straight
Anand is also having impact on hikaru's youtube view 😂
magnus, bobby and kasparov are in the league of their own
You forgot mikhail tal
@@joshuagarcia5007 Absolutely - Tal was genius... along with Bobby and Magnus
@@nubianpwr Sure Tal was a creative attacking player, but his moves were not as accurate as Fischer and Magnus.
Morphy is there alongside Fischer, Carlsen and Kasparov.
46:59 respect of Hikaru for Fischer ❤
Alekhine did not choke on meat, he was assassinated by KGB, that is a fact...
Love your exchange and personalities - thanks Hikaru and Levy!
41:05 Levy does great impersonations. That was perfect Caruana.
Levy legit said “I just work here”
In India even those who doesn't know anything about chess(the basics) onow the name "Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand"
He is part of our GK book
So Hikaru has figured out the hack to get more views on TH-cam.
Lmao yes. Suddenly all of india is also watching.
It's all about get more views, lol😊
@@DarkClarity HHAHAHAHHAHAHA true

Indeed. Yet very few people realizing that. He did the same thing when he started mentioning agadmator's channel, so that subscribers migrate to his channel.
It ends right when Hikaru was gonna rank himself!
Hikaru should be +lucky, right?
@@raveoliraveoli3801 maybe a theorist or below I'd say
@@ryankhoury1 Kasparov reference
@@ryankhoury1 definetely theorist
He doesn't even belong on this list 😂
You two playing each other from famous positions was a good idea for a video series.
Man I’m really happy that someone talked about Dibyendu Barua..even Indians don’t know his name!!!
I think by definition, we give Ding Great + Lucky
Max Euwe has also written over 100 chess books (have a couple) and has really been an inspiration for many in the Netherlands
Yeah, I have one of his books too. However, considering all the legends like Keres, Rubinstein etc who weren’t world champions, he’s a bit of a fluke world champion. He’s like the Greece of chess champions :)
Even before knowing chess i knew about Anand . Undoubtedly a god of chess .
who is he ?
I’d have Lasker, Capa, Botvinnik, Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov, Kramnik, Carlsen all above Anand. I’d put him in the ”Undisputed #1” category
With a few of these you can argue for Anand but still
@@whitebiscut4688 He is a cricketer
@@Max-kv8uw funny enough, Anand very likely has their important games memorized. He also recites lines very fast when he theorizes, and so does Hikaru too so no wonder Hikaru enjoys Anands pontification of old games -- that's what I infer.
I didn't even know what chess was but I knew Vishy. He has done more to chess than anyone in history
In the East maybe, but definitely Bobby Fischer in the West. Everyone knows Fischer, there’s three movies about him, which kinda says it all. Well, “Searching for Bobby Fischer” isn’t really about him, but it definitely counts.
For sure. Up until last year Fischer was the only chess player I could name
Euwe wasn't the only 'amatuer' world champion. Botvinnik also had a day job outside of chess - as an engineer.
“He choked on a chicken bone” was so funny 😂
I couldn’t stop laughing that was so funny😂
Chucky, Morphy, Capablanca, Anand, Big Vlad, Hikaru, Agad rank is what I was excited. Magnus Bobby obvious.
It should have been obvious but Magnus was underrated.
In Russia, everyone who goes against government "chokes on a chicken bone".
or you get a cup of tea
When they were listing American players inspired by Fischer, they forgot his biggest inspiree: Josh Waitzkin.
I don't have a clue about how to even set up a chess board but watching these vids are like watching the history of the Sith and Jedis.
How can you not recognize Alekhine? He was not only one of the best, but was notorious. I've known his face since I was a teenager.
I know, right?
12:20 remind me of Anand interview with Shekhar Gupta. Where Gupta shares his story of meeting Kasparov
Where's the second half of the Video? I wanna see Morphy, Tal, and Chuky get analyzed!!
43:11 hikaru: watch it levy
Really cool idea, but I miss GM Jan Timman, GM Peter Leko and GM Gata Kamsky.
Just watching this now and seeing Ding discussed as 'getting smoked in candidates' is quite funny now - hindsight 20/20 I know

The fact that hikaru knows about debendu barua , shows he prepped up good in history of indian chess👍🏻
I wish we got that Karpov - Fischer match. Would've been epic.
I can’t even play chess (nor do I watch it at all - this video just popped up in my feed), but even I know just about everything about Anand’s career. He was/is absolutely massive in India.
Hikarus pronounciation of Euwe, Aljechin and others is top notch!❤
I'm a simple guy. I saw Anand and I clicked. No second thoughts!
"the only cuban im scared of is Yoel Romero"
wow man.. the respect you have for Anand, you just deserve respect for thinking that deep!
I think you'd have to say Fabi and Hikaru are both in the "Great + Unlucky" because Magnus exists. Perhaps "Great + Lucky" should be lower than "Great + Unlucky".
48:15 now we know where hans got the "chess speaks for itself" quote from.
