So first phase is the wedding. 2nd phase is the family before she "dies.", 3rd form is Kefka parody, and the 4th phase is the taking your bows when the show is over. Love this fight. Great performance.
Sally Stageplay, as she was often called, wasn't always the star that people knew her as. An amateur actor playing lesser parts, with her own one-woman show (which itself had merely a lukewarm reception), Sally cursed her supposed bad luck on the stage but knew not its origin. She never said the Scottish play's name on stage and wasn't one to whistle, nor did she ever wish her fellow players "good luck". _Why,_ then, was it that she never got her one big break? She would have given anything for fame and fortune...which was just what the Devil wanted to see and hear. He could sense her frustration, and her desire to be the brightest star anyone had ever seen. After some brief negotiations, the starlet signed away her soul (not that it had done her much good anyway, in her eyes), and before you could say "To be or not to be", Sally Stageplay was rising through the ranks, landing lead after lead. It was everything she'd dreamed of...but the curtain falls on everyone sooner or later.
Haha, I just went with the practice of referring to Macbeth as "the Scottish play", since apparently it's bad luck to refer to it as Macbeth in the theater.
I love how Sally prematurely celebrates in her final form when she hasn't killed Cuphead yet. It's like she has complete confidence in her umbrella or something.
Honestly one of the most fun and underrated bosses in the game. A lot of people don't talk about her much and it's a shame considering how fun her fight is
Anyone else notice the attention to detail in phase 1 for the groom? While you’re hitting Sally, he lifts up his hat. When neither of you are hitting each other, he runs back and forth. When Sally hits you, he does a heel click.
I just noticed that the second phase has TWO different babies. One with brown hair and one with blond hair and curly like Sally's. I'm thinking Sally and the guy are husband and wife both in and out the stage.
So, never expected anything close to a normal human in THIS game, but here she was, and by god, she got really intense by the second phase, sometimes I had no idea how I managed to dodge the attacks
Since so much of her fight alludes to love, family and angels, I'm assuming Sally was a romantic person who wanted to have a happy, normal life. I think she sold her soul to the devil in exchange for love, which is partly why her husband doesn't join in the fight--first off, her husband is too precious to her, and secondly, her battle with Cuphead is her way of defending her dreams ane proving to herself that she made the right choice.
If I remember correctly, the bosses you fought in that final battle were part of the background, which might explain why Sally herself, can't hurt you via contact in this phase.
Yes, that's what asbestos is used for. I guess what I'm trying to get at is was it common for fires or any of the sort to happen in theaters and why was the word printed on the curtains, they honestly had no alternate for them?
The 3rd phase is inspired by Kefka's final tier in Final Fantasy 6. With the cut husband character in phase 1, also appears in a reclining position eating grapes (Which is similar to Kefka's second phase).
I love the conception here, the multi phase boss fight being acts in a play. The man walking across the stage with a cutout wave is perfect. They really lean into whatever theme the boss is and take it to a conclusion.
The similarities between Sally's divine form and God Kefka from FF6 can't be a mere coincidence... Even meteor is part of the attacks! It would have blown my mind if she used Ultima as well xD
I've seen people say it's more like Necro's (from SFIII) dive kick with the the way one of the legs is bent, but it was totally Dhal who started that. Also with the start of the fight there's a nod to another SFIII character Urien, what with arms up as she blasts off the dress she's wearing before doing battle.
Love this boss and havent even faced her yet. This being said, I enjoy seeing her knocked out since her first attack pattern reminds me TOO MUCH of the Baroness and her f-ing cupcake minion.
Can't believe out of all the bosses in the game beside the main antagonists, Sally got to be the one to get references in a Spirit Battle for the Cuphead spirits in Smash. Neat.
Didn't really like her design but this is one of my favorite boss fights. The stageplay aspect is really cool and charming, and I love her laugh, I think it's really cool and kinda eerie. The fact that this boss wasn't really hard or easy was nice too. Overall a really fun boss.
At that point when she throw her foldable fan that becomes an obstacle, I'll dare say this to everyone who fought Sally Stageplay: You never "THINK" of getting rid of that by making her throwing it "off-screen"!!!
I like to think that Sally was planning for the Cupbros/whoever was going to collect her contract to show up and crash her performance; she wanted their fight to be a part of her last play as her magnum opus. The show must go on after all!

Sally had always been an aspiring actor, wishing to be one of the greats of Hollywood, like many others before her. However, her luck was never that good, always landing her in second rate plays as a side character. This made her blood boil. She spent days and nights, rehearsing scenes and lines for plays she was or wanted to be involved in, yet her big break never came. She would give her life for just ONE chance to achieve fame, fortune and glory, something The Devil was delighted to hear, seizing the opportunity to snatch another soul. He made a deal with her, and before you could say “Shakespeare”, she was already making a name for herself, rising to stardom using the name of Sally Stageplay. I know Sonic Destroyer came up with one for Sally, but I kinda wanna do my own story for her which I've adapted a bit from I fan's stories. Sally Strouser was a girl who loved the art of theater, ever since she was young, she loved and wanted more of it. Her parents didn't really see it, as they wanted her to be a doctor or an author like they were. Regardless, Sally strived to be the actress she wanted to be. In her high school years, she got into drama class, where she met a man who would later be her husband. Enter Harold Richardson, a handsome debonair man with a flair for show biz and tap dancing. The two fell in love and they both saw potential in each other. They stared together in many school plays, usually as the romantic leads. They were inseparable and would usually never star with another actor or actress in a romantic play that wasn't each other. Eventually she rose to stardom and Sally especially got huge praise, even being dubbed Sally Stageplay. But later, the Great Depression hit Inkwell Isle. Yes even this wasn't safe. As a result, Sally and Harold stared in lower budget plays, which wasn't what they wanted, but they had to support their family. One day, Sally was greeted by a supposed talent scout named Dean Vill who promised her wealth and fame like old times. What she didn't realize was that Dean Vill was The Devil in disguise. It wasn't until she signed the contract that he showed his true colors. She managed to escape with her life and her soul. Soon, Harold caught up to her to tell her photographers and interviewers were wanting to know about her next play. The contract had worked. Before you knew it, Sally and Harold were back on top. But it wouldn't be long before The Devil would catch up with her, and would send over two new associates of his.
Even though I like the stories of how Sally Stageplay is either an up-and-coming actress who's good, but not great or a hack actress who tried to get people to like her despite her lack of talent, I prefer yours, because it actually does something the other two stories don't: fits in the husband and children seen in this level.
My head canon about the "babies" in this battle is that they're actually midgets playing babies. Given the time period Cuphead is set in it wouldn't be that big of a stretch.
I like how the “Big Wave” is just a guy carrying a cardboard cutout.

Even though I like the stories of how Sally Stageplay is either an up-and-coming actress who's good, but not great or a hack actress who tried to get people to like her despite her lack of talent, I prefer yours, because it actually does something the other two stories don't: fits in the husband and children seen in this level.
Canais Young thanks. Though I wouldn't take all the credit. Some of it, I adapted from other fan stories. Well one a little bit.
Man I would love to see the voice actor for this character!
She keeps swirling and twirling and rolling
Show’s over, Sally!
My head canon about the "babies" in this battle is that they're actually midgets playing babies. Given the time period Cuphead is set in it wouldn't be that big of a stretch.
That Big wave tsunami thing tho XD 1:21
JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA
YOU KILLED A MARRIED WOMAN WHO HAS A HUSBAND AND TWO KIDS! / A FAMILY!
*How are you gonna live on yourself? HUH!? HUH!!??*
Justin Richard EX Don't worry their not dead
Original Gameteer yeah. At least the father has to take care of them. (And get a new gal as well.)
Actually, in the ending, she is alive. And she kisses her husband. :)
Its clearly a matter of self defence! :-D
She owed the Devil debts and he sent Cuphead to collect. Though Cuphead was only doing it to save his own soul from collecting.
0:39 listen closely and you can hear her say "YOU!"
Update: You can kill Sally's husband by not shooting her at all.
You actually have to stand on both cherubs like a Jason-like bastard.
Heinz Doofenshmirtz That too.
Sally Stageplay's secret dream is surely marrying the "husband" actor for real. In the good ending she kisses him......That is so sweet somehow
I wasn’t expecting a little big planet karting song at the end lmao
ahhhhh the play was wonderful
Thanks, Mugs!
@@daportal757 I also enjoyed the play.
