This is one of my favorite songs, PERIOD. It is such a smooth and relaxing track that is VERY danceable, and has a very nice and consistent rhythm. Why, oh why, don't more people look for this kind of music? Another thing: Just listen to the harmony among the singers! There is really nothing that I can find wrong with this song, and is really quite professionally and seriously done by The B-52's, which says a Hell of a lot about how much they appreciated its beauty. That's that.
I mean it’s not a rump shaker how do you think they plan of hypnotizing us in to open a portal to hell. Topaz is truth and beauty while ushers yeah is slowly inching us toward a castlvenia style apocalypse
The song reminds me of my father Jack. This was his favorite band and some of our favorite songs. He passed away years ago just in his late 40s.. from complications of diabetes that he struggled with for- years. I was thinking about him today and this song played randomly. I had almost forgotten it somehow and as soon as I heard it, it brought tears to my eyes. I will forever be grateful for the love of music that my father taught me, he showed me the best music in life including this song, pure magic.✨🔥80s baby for life.😎☯️🧜♀️🌅🌙🏹🔮
I had the pleasure of living in Seattle in the 1989-93 era when this song came out. Coming over the I-90 into the Snoqualmie mountains and then you see the beautiful city of Verdant Green Seattle in the Summertime. If you have ever been to the Pacific Northwest and saw The Emerald City at sunset in the summertime it is a breathtaking sight. I would play this song as the sun was setting over the harbors and looking south towards Alki beach. Vancouver BC is just as breathtaking. This song is about what is best in humanity, and what it possible if we love enough - and if we care enough. I am now 51 and still engage in acts of kindness whenever and however I can for the planet, for my family, and for people that I will likely never meet through charities. This song was part of my awakening as a young adult as to what was possible as a humanitarian, and that we can care for our planet and have a stewardship to do just that.
Funny how time is. I'm 40 I bought this album as a cassette tape. When it came out. I was in 6th grade ( I think). I played the cassette until it wore out. And, here I am still listening. still loving it.
I'm 44 and had the tape as well. I actually listened to it one day reading Avengers Annual #17 (iirc), 'The Evolutionary War' issue, while trying to work on a tan... the tan didn't happen (Swedish and English genes, its tough man!), but the comic and music were great! ;}
The whole song is summery poetry: the harmonizing vocals, the complementing melody, the actual lyrics themselves 😍 this song is too underrated, I can’t
This song is absolutely fantastic! The harmonies are beautiful, and the lyrics talk about a futuristic heavenly paradise...happy happy happy! Thank you, B-52's.
"Topaz" New cities by the sea Skyscrapers are winking Some hills are never seen The universe expanding We're gazing out to sea Blue dolphins are singing Minds swim in ecstasy Clear planet, ever free Topaz Our hearts are traveling faster, Faster than the speed of love Straight through a tear in the clouds Up to the heavens above Bright ships will sail the seas Starfishes are spinning Some hills are never seen Our universe is expanding Moonrise upon the sea Starships are blinking We'll walk in ecstasy Clear planet blue and green Topaz Our thoughts are traveling faster Moving beyond the heavens above Planets pulsating, constellations creating Voices are guiding me to the cities by the sea Yes, I see cities by the sea Deep forests by the sea Skyscrapers are winking Some hills are never seen The universe is expanding Topaz
I was living in Indonesia when this came out. I'd listen to cosmic thing on my Sony Walkman while laying on the beach watching palm trees blowing in the breeze. Topaz always takes me back there.
Found this song's name written on one of my father's old notebook along with other's from them...this one is amongst the greatest...its severely underrated.
This was one of my favorite songs to blast on the car stereo while I was driving. The harmonies on this song are haunting. Still gives me goose bumps. And you can tell Mr. Strickland's guitar work coming from being a percussionist , just great rhythm . Still one of my favorites. =)
I saw the B52’s in 1984 Umass Amherst! My high school treat to myself! What a blast! One of the best original band in rock history! Completely new sound and approach!
Listening to this song on a remote Island with a cold bottle of sweet Champagne and fried shrimps, with a Bose Cd player and partying with a dozen of young just married couples dancing to this eternal classic art beat and simply having a marvelous time.Add a thousand colorful balloons and roses all over the place plus the presence of Keith,Fred,Cindy and Kate. Let's '' ROCK ''!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When it was released I used to listen to it in the car in Maida Vale & Camden ...now everytime I listen to it I'm transported back to then. Great track.
I'm doing my best not to cry as this is my life, since I was votied most not to successd at anything in life complementts of my parents . my Pop knew better. Topaz.
God I love this song it really is a gem I so love this vibe here today Blessings and a about out to all the loving beings on and off world.....topaz... Our hearts are traveling faster☕💐💖💝💗
I will never forget my much older sister coming back from a concert from this tour and telling me this was her favorite song from "Cosmic Thing." One of "her" songs that has always stuck with me ~ an 80s kid and Hard Rockin' Metal Head
This song is about taking Blue dolphin ecstasy and driving along a coast looking at a cityscape or walking out to the ocean with the cityscape behind. Its got a super funky vibe and I loved this song ever since my grandma showed it to me one day before elementary school and I was like "this is so nice oldma" Grandmas are so awesome.
1989...just graduated HS when Cosmic Thing came out. Along with Tom Petty that same year...this song is one of my favorite melodies. Amazing vocals & musicianship!😁👍👏👏👏
I bought cosmic thing in Berlin when i was 15 and i loved it, I stoped listen to it and start listen to it again and lost it again and start listen to it again. Life changes and i become older but somewhow cosmic thing is still there, There are not many things that are still there so cosmic thing might be special.
Attended their concert in Grand rapids Michigan a couple of years ago and got to meet and greet them backstage!!!! It was a show full of energy and fun!!!
I remember this song so fondly....I was 20 years old, and was working as a security guard at Philmont Boy Scout Ranch. Nearby was a very artsy-bohemian town called Taos, about 20-25 minutes away. You would wind through the mountains between Philmont Ranch and Taos and it was a beautiful drive. I would put on my Walkman( lol) and listen to this song, over and over and over.....the last 20 seconds of this song are especially golden.
i never know how Fred does it, if i were standing between those two lovely ladies and their amazing voices i would be way too embarrassed to try to sing.
This is one of my favorite songs, PERIOD. It is such a smooth and relaxing track that is VERY danceable, and has a very nice and consistent rhythm. Why, oh why, don't more people look for this kind of music?

That's that.
ExposingZionistEvil oh god it’s so beautiful
Gets me every time. Even after more than 30 years
ExposingZionistEvil - Me too. I can hear Topaz heralding the dawn of a peaceful two-state solution.
I mean it’s not a rump shaker how do you think they plan of hypnotizing us in to open a portal to hell. Topaz is truth and beauty while ushers yeah is slowly inching us toward a castlvenia style apocalypse
La ecología en estado puro
One of the most under-rated songs ever. Gorgeous harmonies. Thanks B-52's!
i agree so enchanting ,mansfield uk
Yes, it is especially haunting when you tripped ballz to this song with a dude that later became a murderer!!
Yep.
I thought this was the true gem in the entire album.
My personal favorite.
This is definitely their most underrated song. It's a shame that it's never played live.
best b-52 song ever
Feels like a rocket ride to musical nirvana somewhere deep in space!

The girls vocals are full of emotion & personality, brings a tear to my eye. Should have been a single.

Always felt like a secret for fans. This exquisite song is for us.
This song a gem glad it was never main stream.

It's a shame that the band has hardly ever performed this live. I think Kate, Fred and Cindy could still slay it!
this song blows me away...everytime.
The future is NOW...lol... Blessed.be..☕
"Topaz"
New cities by the sea
Skyscrapers are winking
Some hills are never seen
The universe expanding
We're gazing out to sea
Blue dolphins are singing
Minds swim in ecstasy
Clear planet, ever free
Topaz
Our hearts are traveling faster,
Faster than the speed of love
Straight through a tear in the clouds
Up to the heavens above
Bright ships will sail the seas
Starfishes are spinning
Some hills are never seen
Our universe is expanding
Moonrise upon the sea
Starships are blinking
We'll walk in ecstasy
Clear planet blue and green
Topaz
Our thoughts are traveling faster
Moving beyond the heavens above
Planets pulsating, constellations creating
Voices are guiding me to the cities by the sea
Yes, I see cities by the sea
Deep forests by the sea
Skyscrapers are winking
Some hills are never seen
The universe is expanding
Topaz

I was thinking of this as the perfect song to "go out" with....and then came here only to see you already had that idea. Excellent choice!
Gorgeous song. Kate & Cindy's harmonies are always absolute perfection.
Kate and Cindy's harmonies are absolutely perfect in this song!!
This song gives me the 1989 just-out-of-high school freedom type of feeling.
This is one of my favorite B-52 songs. Cindy and Kate’s singing in harmony is perfect. It’s just a great song.
I was living in Indonesia when this came out. I'd listen to cosmic thing on my Sony Walkman while laying on the beach watching palm trees blowing in the breeze. Topaz always takes me back there.

The B-52s = Happy Place.
This was one of my favorite songs to blast on the car stereo while I was driving. The harmonies on this song are haunting. Still gives me goose bumps.

Actually Nile Rogers played guitar on this one.
Hah, that explains a LOT. I seem to love just about any piece of music Nile Rogers touches.
Boy I tell you cindy wilson and her partner Kate pierson their singing together or solos you know separate. they are both angels. good group B 52s
When you lose your best friend and older brother but know that he's still out there somewhere and the show must go on! R.I.P Ricky Wilson.

I will never forget my much older sister coming back from a concert from this tour and telling me this was her favorite song from "Cosmic Thing." One of "her" songs that has always stuck with me ~ an 80s kid and Hard Rockin' Metal Head
Born in '82 and my cool parents jammed to this album throughout my upbringing. I not only get the nostalgia but the fact that this is just good music.
Remember going to clubs out of it late 80,s 90,s, love still today

For 30 years at least
This song is about taking Blue dolphin ecstasy and driving along a coast looking at a cityscape or walking out to the ocean with the cityscape behind. Beautiful, relaxing, endlessly listenable. You can hear Keith really clearly on background vocals at 1:56!
Their best song,
from their best album!
Bright ships that sail the sea. Star ship are blinking. I love the cities by the sea.
Someone please explain how you could not fall in love with this song (and this whole album, for that matter).
imagine you're deaf and don't have the capacity to listen to music. There. That's one.
Even if this song was the only worth while song on the album which it is not. B-52’s rock. Even John Lennon said so.
I love this song...reminds me of the ocean
I bought cosmic thing in Berlin when i was 15 and i loved it, I stoped listen to it and start listen to it again and lost it again and start listen to it again. Life changes and i become older but somewhow cosmic thing is still there,
There are not many things that are still there so cosmic thing might be special.

One of the best rock albums Ever.
Love b52s harmonies in this song👍
This song is my absolute fave from the band. Makes me think of night harbor cruising in NY or sailing in the Bermudas.
I remember this song so fondly....I was 20 years old, and was working as a security guard at Philmont Boy Scout Ranch. Nearby was a very artsy-bohemian town called Taos, about 20-25 minutes away. such a good song...Kate and Cindy....mmmmmm
This track should have been a single....could have been a hit.
i never know how Fred does it, if i were standing between those two lovely ladies and their amazing voices i would be way too embarrassed to try to sing.
He gay.
being gay makes him not embarrassed to sing over two clearly far superior vocalists.
If Fred's voice was removed, they would have been as popular as Fleetwood Mac. I'm glad they didn't remove it.
this music really feels like a new adventure in life!
This song helps me get through bad thoughts ❤
BEAUTIFUL
Imagine : Starships are blinking - awsome !
From Germany
This is a total gem from the 'rubbish' years, one of my favourite B52 songs
This makes me want to know how to play the guitar.
Wow! This is amazing! I love the melody, how calm and reflective it is. Kinda like being sorry and looking back. I love it!
Albert Einstein would have cranked this!
