  • Hopefully this is the Making of Myst mini-documentary that was on the CD of MYST. If not, I've probably uploaded a random file

    I must have watched this a hundred times back when I was 12 or so when Myst was all the rage. It was included on a demo disk that came along with one of those 400 page manuals that retailed for like 200 bux w/ a title like "MAKE YOUR OWN 3D GAMES" with all kinds of fluorescent colors on the cover and claw scratches and what not.
    Man, I fantasized about owning this game for years. :D When I finally got it, Riven was just around the corner for release. Myst was a huge part of my youth. It's fun to watch this again. :D

      Same here! I used to think creating worlds like that was so cool. Hard to explain how ahead of it's time Myst actually was to the youngsters... such a great atmosphere, too.

      Was probably even younger back then and understood almost no English. Still watched it many times, I was soo fascinated by what they achieved!!!

      It wasn't until later that I understood the concepts that were presented in this making-of. (I used to watch this, but only for the visuals, and the different ideas like the blue-screen segment for Atrus' desk) I didn't understand enough English (I was 3-4) at the time.

    "...just taking my Craftsman 7/8th inch wrench, with a lifetime guarantee..."
    As kids, me and my brother used to quote that line all the time. We thought the mention of a lifetime guarantee in that context was out of nowhere and hilariously random.
    For real though, Myst is an amazing game.

    Oh man, this takes me back. 1993, 7th grade, playing this with a buddy of mine on a school computer in our free time, bringing our "Myst journals" with us. Even one of our teachers was into the game as well, and played it with us every now and then. Good times...

    Ah man this is so nostalgic. When I was 5 I could'nt work anything out or even get off Myst island so I used to watch this video over and over looking for a clue and gawping at the images of the other places and trying to work it out lol. I got there in the end I think when I was ten ...

    I know this was uploaded over 3 years ago, but yes, I can tell you....per the description, that this is in fact the documentary that came with the original game. I probably watched it a dozen times, and I was blown away. When this game launched, it was amazing...my computer could barely handle it. To this day, it still holds up as a genre-defining moment in gaming.

      I'm sure I got at least one (very minor) clue as to how to solve certain puzzles by watching the "making of" video before I finished the game - still took me years to finish the thing, when I was a kid. Took me best part of another year to *realise* I'd finished it, because it lets you keep playing after you've solved everything and Atrus mentions needing you later! I actually bought the paperback hint book (no internet walkthroughs back then) *after* I'd beaten the game, before finally accepting there was nothing else to do... :-P

    • @TheRedRaven_

      Lol same, I believe the only worlds I got to were the forest/swamp area and the area with the octagonal buildings surrounded by ocean. Can’t believe after all these years (1994) that I still remember them so vividly.

  • @Kazuo1G
    @Kazuo1G 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What really would make you a true Myst fan is the fact that you could recognize all of the locations and puzzles they've made for the game in those sketches they show at the beginning. :D

  • @jcortese3300
    @jcortese3300 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I have such fond memories of this game, this one and Riven. I didn't even really try to solve the puzzles. I just loved walking around in such a lovely world and fiddling with stuff, and listening to the ambient music. Then it seems like video games all turned into gore-fests and shoot-em-up, and I lost interest.

    I wish it were in better quality, but this was on a CD-ROM in 1995, and was quite high tech at the time.
    And to think, the whole game was built in HyperCard. That's like building an interactive game in PowerPoint.
    BTW, this why 'click to not die' actions in modern games are still called Quicktime Events.

    • @DaVince21
      @DaVince21 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There was no such mechanic as a quick time event in games like Myst. Quick time events are called such because you need to press buttons with quick timing in order to have the movie-like sequence in your game proceed. The term "Quick time events" itself originates from Shenmue.
      It _did_ always entertain me that it was also called "Quicktime" like the media decoding tech of the early 90s, but they are definitely separate things with separate origins.

      Check your dates, the copyright at the end of the doc says 1993, which means this was probably filmed and produced in '92. Yeah, we're only talking a couple of years, but not sure where you got '95 from.

    It is amazing how talented Robyn Miller is in his music. Did he compose that all himself? The music in Myst is something I believe a genius made.
    When i found this documentary on the game disc itself, i thought i had this very special secret look into the making of Myst. it made the game all that more interesting to me again knowing this team of talented people made this game. The sound effects and music part of the video was the most interesting part. And what i want to know, is why this guy blowing bubbles in a Toilet bowl? Was there no sink available!? 8:44 : )

      Same here, dude. I think it was because, at the time, there wasn't a game so immersive AND so isolating. It was just you. The only other live bodies were trapped in books. It just played up a sort of primal response to being alone in a strange, potentially unfriendly world with tons of questions and no answers.

      i totally did something similar after watching this, i rigged a bunch of mikkie d's straws together and then rigged a mic with like 3 or 4 extensions so i could get it in to my bathroom and recorded the sound of bubbles in my toilet in a program called WinDat that came with my packardbell. I made a whole bunch of cool sound effects that summer i was like 13 or 14.

      I don't think RealMyst ME is as good as it seems. It might just be me being a die-hard fan since the first version came out, but I just don't like the ultra-high-res graphics and how they contrast with the videos. If I was designer, I would've asked the Miller brothers or Guy Sprung and Brian Wrench to re-shoot Sirrus + Achenar's scenes. The audio on those clips is still as compressed as ever.
