  • @rbase96

    This is probably my favorite sb nation video ever.
    One thing to keep in mind with this video is that's it not easy to play in the MLB for a long period of time. Jeff Francoeur is a very average player, but that means that there are many players worse than him. '1.8' oWar means that in his career he is worth 1.8 wins better then a replacement player. He's a very good defensive outfielder with a cannon arm. Most of these players, which are ok but not great, are replaced by younger prospects once they've had their 3th or so chance to become better than average.
    These statistics compare Jeff with players who have played as long as he has in the MLB. He's one of the worst to play for this long. But if you look carefully at that graph at 15:03, you see that of the 65 rookie outfielders that made their debut in 2005 only 12 finished their career with a better career WAR then Jeff Francoeur. And a lot of them were out of the MLB in less than 5 years.

    Nate Robinson Highlights! Dude was 5'9" and played a solid career in the NBA. He was so athletic he had the choice to go pro at whatever sport he dedicated himself to. A former dunk champion, dunked in game, blocked Yao Ming, Blocked LeBron James. He definitely played way bigger than he was, while still using his height and speed to his advantage

    They usually fall off because they start super well but then the league adjusts and starts throwing them different pitch types. Unless the player adjusts back then they will be bad after that. Baseball is a game of adjustments that’s why players burst onto the scene then fall off

    A Lot of rookie hitters do well at first because the pitchers don't know how to pitch to them yet. Only after they've seen a few at bats do they have enough information to know what pitches they need to throw to strike them out.

    Jomboy Media has been doing a review of a few particularly good innings from the World Series in each of the last 50 years, since there's no new baseball. Watch some of the older games, like the mid to late 1970s. They don't know much about the teams from before the mid 90s, especially if they aren't Yankees teams. But they know a lot about baseball. It's a bood way to get into watching the dynamics of actual play from top players. It is really different watching pitch by pitch as opposed to just the highlights. The tension and story developing is an important part of the game. And Jomboy does a good job of explaining it and joking about it.

    Pitchers figure out where the holes are in a hitters swing, what pitch hitters have trouble with and other exploitable weaknesses. Over time, without an adjustment by the hitter, things get ugly for the rookie hitter.

  • @lazyidiotofthemonth
    @lazyidiotofthemonth 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is a such thing as a chemistry player, a guy you get just because his effect on the locker room is so huge, usually they have offensive stats to back them up though. If you only looked at Batting average he isn't a terrible player, but his low walk is what drops his On base percentage(.303) off a cliff, and his slug percentage of .416 in more of a meh number than a abysmal number. He did manage nearly 700 RBIs although having 1080 strikeouts in only 5661 plate appearances is genuinely bad.

    I know this is my second comment but part of his fame is that he was a hometown kid for one of the best fan bases in baseball. Like think if a 18 year old born and raised in let’s say Sunderland came out and scored 10 goals in his first 20 games, and was an amazing person who had a real personal connection with the fans. He’s a cult hero of sorts.
