The Black Cloud | Box of Paperbacks

Written in 1957, The Black Cloud is a hard science-fiction story written by the British astrophysicist Fred Hoyle, and though it is not as well remembered as the stories by Isaac Asimov or Arthur C. Clarke, it certainly has all the hallmarks of a novel from the Golden Age of Science-Fiction.

I hear you. It takes time for me to adjust to rapid changes of scale with POV. This Box of Paperbacks endeavor has certainly got me to read authors like Fred Hoyle who I had not read previously.

@@PeculiarNotions I recently read a book that had small, but rapid time shifts (i.e., from present to near-past memories) and it was a bit confusing. Love how your exploring new-to-you authors via your Box of Paperbacks!

@@booksmitin I understand what you mean. That technique can be a problem for me, too, and I've notice that some of my students also have trouble following those rapid shifts if they are not clearly delineated or telegraphed ahead of time.

I felt the same. The foundation of the story is interesting, but I wasn't a fan of some of the stylistic choices.
