Winter Madness is by far the best solo in the history of metal solos. Disagree? fight me! All in all, Alexi's earlier solos sounded personal. They were wild, they were out of the ordinary, they were Alexi, the Wildchild. Lately, Alexi has just made very boring and "plain" solos. they no longer sound like it comes straight from his love for music. Jari, has an INSANE technique and sense of melody writing. His solos are catchy. They stick to your head. You can still hear that he loves writing them and really loves playing the guitar. I think talent wise, playing wise and writing wise, jari wins hands down. But when it comes to just bursting out personal solos, young Alexi wins.
I can't remember one single melody or song from Jari that stuck in my head for a week ... Yet 20 years later I can sing all the "follow the reaper" album. Do you know why? Not because it was catchy. It was a game changer. Laiho guitar playing style and music was on another league. His musicality and talent at the age of 20, was phenomenal. Jari and all other random musicians won't be able to achieve something like that in a lifetime. Playing boring melodies with 20 instruments or playing fast mambo jumbo scales, won't make your music better nor memorable.
Jari wins at live skill, intricate crafting, and overall legend, but I think more people identify with Alexi more because he's more fun, varied in his solo style, and isn't such a perfectionist that he takes nearly a decade to put out a new ablum!!!..that being said, I'm still a much bigger Wintersun fan, but Alexi gets major props for being a musical genius who doesn't annoy his fans with endless album delays.
It is kinda' annoying, but one must remember that he is at it alone, with very little money to produce something epic, and continued delays with his record label. Also, bands now a days need to be constantly touring, cuz record sales are shit. It's a shame, he's probably one of the most (if not the most) influencial and original musicians out there.
As a great Wintersun fan, I don't see delaying albums as "annoying the fans". Some fans might take it wrong, but I'd rather wait a bit longer, if the artists thinks that is necessary to improve the outcome of the album in the end. Waiting for stuff like this pays off.
As much as I loved Alexi, saying he had "more varied in his solo style" just isn't true even remotely. He routinely employs the exact same 3 note pattern in like, all of his solos. Example: 0:11, 0:20, 1:06, 1:24, 3:51, 8:05. could be a signature thing, also just made all of his solos sound very 'samey'. The worst part was he couldn't perform almost any of them live for most of his career. Jari has a cleaner style, more varied techniques, and is such a great live guitarist (sadly not doing live guitar anymore).
Both are great composers. Although Jari is like a god for me, his songs, especially lyrically, are much deeper than anyone else's music. Jari seems to be writing more 'diverse' music from one point, but in another aspect, Alexi is writing diverse solos, he's using lotsa whammy bars, pitch-dives, etc. Overall, they write solos which are fitting the best for their music. And they are both goddamn good. Objectively I couldn't compare their solos, generally taken, Jari's music is much more complex and deeper. And of course, in the aspect of the amount of released materials, Alexi wins! But... on the other hand, Jari has 6 unreleased albums (unfinished/unedited/unmastered, though). After conquering his studio, he's gonna rip our faces off with his fiery, smoking solos. Sadly enough, that's gonna take at least 1 decade, I'm afraid. Lucky, Jari's an eternal entity :D

Alexi perfected what he was good at and was also just as solid with rhythm guitar. Jari feels like he was always pushing himself beyond his limit with everything he does. That's just my opinion as someone who heard Children of Bodom before Wintersun and early Ensiferum.

Everything written on Sinergy's Beware the Heavens album (which features some really tasty neoclassical playing) was written by a 20 year old Alexi. That's pretty talented, in my opinion. Definitely a good start, but Alexi has had his own problems with injuries, ailments, alcoholism and lack of work ethic for practicing guitar. Still, his recent work, recent live performances and especially his input on the Mr. Crowley track from a Rhoads tribute earlier this year, shows that he's getting his groove back. They both bring something great to the table, which is all I want in a guitarist. I don't care for who's "better", as you don't have to be the most precise and proficient player in the room to put out some nice, tasty licks, riffage and solos. Clearly, Jari is the sharper one. His work on the Time albums and Wintersun's eponymous album is rapturous. The dude's been practicing his ass off, for sure. He also embraces neoclassical much more closely than Alexi, which Alexi has barely any semblance of in his playing, if any. With that said, I personally favor neoclassical playing over other styles, mostly. This is due to the style being based on centuries of melody and the modification of the sound from minor to major is such a subtle but grand change that really catches your ear. It's naturally fast, naturally technical, and naturally melodical, and can carry both grim, dark tones and beautiful, harmonious tones. Alexi has quite a disadvantage as well, because from 2009 to 2012 he suffered injuries and infections that had him severely (and quite visibly) out of practice, combined with his admitted lack of ethic coming from himself for practice, whereas Jari has been improving steadily well before his solo efforts. Still, they both bring amazing things to the table. Jari is his own brand of very technical neoclassical metal and Alexi is his own brand of mid-cranked melodious-thrash metal. Comparing who is better or the best is something I used to do when I was in my teen years, which I now realize is the wrong way to look at things, especially with music. Music should bring people together. Whether it's the poppiest pop or the blackest metal; as soon as competition is involved, the people, the fans, are divided.

everything written by Jari in Immemorial was written by a 16/17 year old Jari. Jari reportedly started learning guitar at age 15 if I remember right. That's less than 2 years that he played before writing When the Rain Ends. which he recorded at age 17 but wrote at age 16.
Damn, that IS what I would call talented! I guess Jari REALLY loves guitar, really practiced a lot, and really has a knack for composition. In any case, I'm really glad he's around because I love hearing great players no matter who they are.

Its actually quite funny, Jari is a god-tier composer and guitarist, all his bandmates are world-class instrumentalists, but Wintersun will forever be doomed to relative obscurity just because he is lazy AF.

Music is not about competition and it was definitely never a competition between those two masterminds and awesome guitar players, so who in fact is here just trying to prove a point? Laiho made and evolution in his style (appart from the dark path that took his health and playing .why mention that to distract from the music fact?) ..don't forget that Wintersun raise with the holy scriptures of bodom first albums. Respect that dudes. and if you gonna spend one decade of your life creating is got to be perfect obviously.. but all the character in Laiho music in one decade ( appart from the fun but good covers) changed his philosophy about the structure of a song . focusing in the whole and constructing riffs that enhance the genre of which he played: Death Metal. not in the fast symphonic metal . but ..he mixed symphonic progression and pioneer it into deathmetal. it never was about been symphonic or even melodic death metal. he was so into pop rock culture. and hair metal bands..and trash bands and of course hard rock, classic rock, and classic metal and NWBHM . that and the anger let him to write yeah no so deep lyrics.. when you point to the fucks and to the motherfuckers.. with hexed the synthetized methaphores and wise anger he got in many songs, got back..children of bodom music cannot be put into one cathegory box.. In all existing universes there is not possible that winter madness can't defeat to Kissing the shadows..not just in the character of the solo but in the construction of the whole song.. the solo must follow the intention of the lyrics or be an answer against . No in the stablished dialogue not in developing the whole concept can defeat it. if you check the lyrics .of WM the solo goes more to a kind of lyrics of kissing the shadows.. but if you put the KS solo into WM lyrics the solo match ... that is call a heavy sober concept..and for that Laiho was a master crafter.
i think jari is much better. i saw cob live and much of the solos you think are the guitar on their albums is actually the keyboard player. he's really good.

If you take Cob first 3 albums, what Alexi could play and write at the age of 20, Jari won't be able to come even close not in a lifetime. You know why? Because Laiho was far more talented and created a unique guitar style and music that inspired generations to come. He was a Game Changer. Period If drugs and alcohol was not priority for Laiho, his latest work would have been even better.

I'm not a professional musician but a poetry writter and an addicted to the craft of pentameters and the character on which a phrase or a verse is developed..and believe me when i said, there is no so much difference between the musical rythm and dialogue and the music in the rythm of a poem.. In all existing universes there is not possible that winter madness can't defeat to Kissing the shadows..not just in the character of the solo but in the construction of the whole song.. the solo must follow the intention of the lyrics or be an answer against . No in the stablished dialogue not in developing the whole concept can defeat it. if you check the lyrics .of WM the solo goes more to a kind of lyrics of kissing the shadows.. but if you put the
KS solo into WM lyrics the solo match ... that is call a heavy sober concept..and for that Laiho was a master crafter.

Although Bodom's my favorite band, I have to say Jari is better than Alexi
i think jari is much better. i saw cob live and much of the solos you think are the guitar on their albums is actually the keyboard player. he's really good.
Lol Jari is far more skilled musician than Alexi. No one can come up with such symphonic atmospheric ambient music like that of wintersun
this isnt even a competition. Jari is so superior to Alexi in playing and techinque.
On songwriting anybody can go with either one.

Jari who? What did he do exactly? I can't remember a single melody or a single solo that stuck deep into my head for more than a week. Yet 20 years later I can sing all "follow the reaper" album like it was released yesterday.
Laiho is on another league. If you take Cob first 3 albums, what Alexi could play and write at the age of 20, Jari won't be able to come even close not in a lifetime. You know why?
Because Laiho was far more talented and created a unique guitar style and music that inspired generations to come.
He was a Game Changer. Period
If drugs and alcohol was not priority for Laiho, his latest work would have been even better.
Alexi is by far a much better composer and soloist hands down

As much as I love Alexi, Jari wins. I do think that all the sweeping in Jari's solos gets a bit boring though.
preffer alexi solos, but i notice more virtuosismo on jari.. not that jari solos are bad.. Different styles.
well i can say this fact, at alexi made so much more music than jari..jari has like 6 solos ha. prolly the worst best band ever. I hate how he operates
