Originally, clicking on this video, I thought this was just going to be about retired lego colors. But this video was much different, and honestly much better than I originally thought. You can tell a lot of heart has gone into this video, and this video honestly really made me think. Thank you for putting the effort into making this for us! ❤️
This video is the pop of color on a shelf full of grey, and I hope you know that. It was so insightful, thorough, and personal that I feel like I earned at least a half an hour's worth of knowledge here--way more than most of what I consume these days on TH-cam. Just wanted to say keep making good art no matter what form it takes because it would be a crime to stop putting yourself out there.
One of my favorite themes in recent years is the Indiana Jones reboot. The sets are accurate and yet they use a different amount of colors to make some parts of them stand out.
@@TheDucksEye I’ve only collected 3 D2C sets and the temple of the golden idol and the Jurassic Park set are tied. Love those both. The Jedi Training one’s good but doesn’t compete with those two.
I have been truly captivated by the sheer imagination of retro lego videos popping up as of late but this is something else. One of the few LEGO videos that actually makes/inspires me to build right after (the highest compliment I can give any LEGO video) I mean you even got the R R stamp of approval :0
Agreed, I like to hear them talk about Lego and their passion for it, discuss its history and bring up topics you wouldn't normally think about, not their latest "haul" or dime a dozen review of this decade's third X-wing.
I love it when i dig up my sand red, blue, and green pieces from my bin and see the 2000s harry potter, starwars, and space themes, always feel really nostalgic
Man, this video makes me REALLY wish LEGO would just release either more sets in more colors, or give us a way to purchase more of these pieces in unique colors that aren't in sets yet. (Also, the strange yet nostalgic OST of Earthbound being used for this video? Amazing choice, it fits SO well.)
I was building the Lego Friends Leo’s room set a few months back, and during it, I thought to myself that Friends is a way for Lego to counterbalance that sea of grey that is Star Wars. I also recently got a Lego yard sale haul that mostly comprised of Friends and Disney Princess sets, and it made me appreciate those themes much more, since they allow themselves to have tons of color. Because of that haul, I have way more pinks, blues, greens, and purples, especially, which I’m happy to have, especially since Dark Purple is my favorite color.
This content gives off major RR Slugger vibes, which is an amazing thing. The passion, the research, the tone (no pun intended) the only thing was the very end of the video was pretty creepy but I still loved it lol.
I sure hope the CITY line will eventually follow Lego Friends direction more and include more enclosed buildings instead of being pretty much a cardboard cutout
Feels like most starwars fans dont even care about the actual builds anyway, it all being decided if figures have a spot of paint on literally every side of the minifigure imaginable
Yeah ): in a way I understand why a lot of Lego fans fixate on figures, there is indeed a certain novelty in seeing so many famous characters in a consistent style. But that mindset, and the need for accuracy and detail it requires is also equally stifling. Why find an obscure clone trooper for 50$ when you can make you’re own creative dude with parts you already have?
For some people Lego is a hobby, for others it's a "hobby." I find it hard to believe they actually like Lego, instead they only like Star Wars Lego, or Harry Potter Lego, or Marvel Lego etc. While I still think it's neat to have some of your favourite franchises in Lego form (Stranger Things Lego was cool) it's always been about creativity and imagination. If you're so hung up on it being something so predefined and accurate then just get a model that isn't Lego.
@@autumn702 Or maybe people enjoy Lego and enjoy Star Wars for example. Why could they not want an accurate model of something they love built out of the very Lego they love? Is that not able to be synonymous?
I’m a chrome lover i understand why they stoped it but i have some really old chrome pieces sitting in a bucket and they haven’t started chipping, the only ones that have are the ones on softer plastic like the sword you mentioned. A hard non flexible chrome coating does not mix well with soft parts they crack very easily but every one on hard plastic like the satellite dishes, lightsaber hilts, ore piece and harpoon held up just fine in over 20 years of me having them
Appreciated this trip through Lego history, well done! Really appreciated the love for Lego Friends-as an adult female I only got into Lego recently, having grown up thinking it was just for boys, and the Friends theme has been one of my favorites (to share with my daughter) for its fun uses of color. Meanwhile my partner has essentially decided to stop buying Star Wars sets because they're all so grey!
This was a great video. I love how balanced you were most TH-camrs really just complain that their favorite colors aren't produced anymore, but I like how you went into the a reason why the Lego group has to keep retiring colors. Most TH-camrs seem to complain that their favorite childhood Lego sets aren't constantly being reproduced that Lego isn't allowed to make anything new.
Thank you, not only for the knowledge you provide, the love you show for lego, but also for the quality of your work. This days I find documentaries just shallow representations of boring subjects. Long gone are the days i watched them with a child view, with curiosity. But this was was just aw inspiring. No wonder television companies are so worried, you're running circles around them. Best regards
You are an incredible film maker. I'm totally getting back into Lego because it's an itch I've been wanting to scratch for a while now. And because your passion is infectious.
Here are some more notes! Sand Green was introduced in 1999 as Endor Luke print. Same goes for Sand Yellow (Dark Tan) on Jar Jar’s torso. Belville introduced (old) Dark Pink (Medium Reddish Violet), which was replaced at the end of 2003. Bright Reddish Orange (Dark Salmon) might be making a return soon. :)
Very interesting thoughts. I love the obscure and weird colors. The first Lego castle is often forgotten - it was yellow, white and red primarily and came out 8 years before the one everybody calls the “yellow castle”
It's my first time on this channel and i love the style of the video, it's so calming yet it doesn't make you fall asleep, it's just right to keep the viewers attention
This is why I do collect both Lego Star Wars and Friends, the mix of more muted colors from the starships and the more out there vibrant houses and other things.
Wow, this was an absolutely amazing video. I feel like the lego community is overwhelmingly far from vapid -- as enthusiastic, imaginative, ingenuitive, mutually encouraging, inspirational, and rich with reflections of fans' sustaining inner child and simply their creativity. And most videos on lego or lego history I feel like exude that passion and love for the toy and the hobby. It's just pleasant content. But this ^ , this felt just exceptional. This felt so personal and sentimental; almost diaristic or like a love letter. Everything about not only just the subject of colour in lego, but what lego has meant to you in your life and throughout the different periods, and even in presentation it all just feels so heartfelt, and authentically touches how meaningful this simple toy has been in my life and my best friends' lives. I remember there was this one nakeyjakey video where he's just laying in bed half under the covers talking the whole video about this game he loved and what it meant to him. And this video makes me feel like i'm almost back on my friend's floor or on the top bunk at night just talking in the dark about what was meaningful to us at the time, often lego of course, but it felt real. And i feel like you did a good job at not just giving a history and not just expressing the enjoyment and even critique, but also how it's been something real. i really loved this. and am definitely sending it to a couple of my friends.
this is one of the best comments i've ever gotten, every thing you said is exactly why I made this video and love lego. it's like I'm being seen for the first time. In general the reception to this video has made me feel like part of a community. people in tune with the spirit of lego are all on the page emotionally, and it's absolutely magical. im so overwhelmed with joy reading this comment, you've made my day ten times over.
My favorite Star Wars set has to be the Jedi interceptors with the huge cockpits and opening wings. They translate so well into lego, and they always put a dash of color onto whatever lineup they follow. I think it might be one of the only yellow Star Wars sets they make. It’s just a shame they are long retired and rarely produced anymore.
I love lego star wars, but it is very dull on colours and i love all the different colours lego has, especially those tasty chrome pieces, grey will always be needed but in a set or mocs a splash of colour can go a long way
I enjoy the Prequels Star Wars sets a lot more, from all the various colourful Jedi Starfighters to the Republic Gunship. I use a lot of niche colours when designing my Ninjago City expansion MOCs. Good video!
What a beautiful video :D I can tell this took a ton of effort to put together, and you explain a lot of my thoughts perfectly. Even when it comes to things like having some colors be too pastel, or finding more beauty in everyday splashes fo color once you've worked with building stuff for so long. Just incredibly interesting and very well produced and meaningful, all while showcasing a good amount of your personality. Keep up the great work, I loved it :)
I love Star Wars and superheroes and their Lego counterparts, but I tend to end up buying other themes a lot of the time and I think the colors definitely have something to do with it, the variety of ninjago, monkie kid, friends,a nd city among other themes is just impressive and fun. It also makes me wish, as a fan of comics and superhero comics that Lego would dip more into sets inspired by comics and less boring movie stuff, as most of the coolest and brightest super hero sets have been inspired by comics, not the movies, it’s how we would get stuff like a green lantern jet, or lobo vs krypto, or an avengers jet that was an appealing bright red and white instead of the standard dull gray or dark blue. Unfortunately I know that the movies with darker colors are more profitable, but still it would be nice to get these sets with more colors and creativity for the marvel and dc worlds I love. Heck this even applies to the new 400 dollar batcave, instead of something creative with lots of fun builds and a trophy room with a T. rex and giant penny, we’re getting a Keaton Batman batcave in a 300 dollar brick built black box. Oh well, at least lego’s original themes and new theme of dreamzzz will have the creativity I love. Oh also the two main sets for the new guardians of the galaxy movie serve as exceptions, as theyre really cool and use fun colors
That’s exactly why I think the LEGO Batman Movie sets are so fantastic. It really is a modern Lego-fication of Batman, and their designs for Poison Ivy, Joker, Killer Croc, are straight up amazing.
this was a really good video essay and really just solidified the fact that lego star wars needs to just make up new ships etc that add colour and life. star wars takes place in lush jungles, frozen wastelands, dry deserts, lava pools, beaches & weird non sensical planets but older collectors have basically pushed lego to only doing the same 5 sets in all grey which kids dont care about.
Thankfully Lego knows that they still need a vibrant color pallet. Star Wars sets need to pay the bills but even city sets make good use of common colors.
I love Lego Star Wars but I can definitely agree there’s a huge abundance of gray, black and white in so many sets. I always appreciate when we stuff like Jedi starfighters or Republic Gunships or pod racers because they add color to the theme. I love both Lego and Star Wars. Between the two, I admit to liking Star Wars more, but I have developed a huge appreciation for Lego's original themes and looks thanks to people like Nick on Planet Ripple and RR Slugger. For example I really want to collect Ice Planet 2002, Rock Raiders Space Police, Pirates, Castle, Aqua Zone, Life on Mars, Exo Force and Knights Kingdom just as much as I want to collect Star Wars and DC/Marvel.
Love this, all of it. I know life gets in the way of new sets sometimes. Lucky I was busy with lesser responsibilies during the gray phase. The world it a funny place but enough friends sets add that extra fun when I take myself to seriously for duplo.
the original use of blue on LEGO tie fighters sets, wasn't for a 'LEGO flair' as you put it but because those sections on the real life models of the ships were blue but because they used bluescreen, they had to be made black and white.
It is true that tie fighters were originally supposed to be blue. Perhaps that was the inspiration for the LEGO version, but to say the decision wasn’t unique and indicative of LEGOs design language is not giving them enough credit.
I agee wth the dull star wars colours, i like the franchise but I barley buy any of ths sets, instead going for classic space because of the vibrant spacesuits and bright vehicles, grays and blacks can be nice but when the while set is one colour it isnt great
Personally, I like the muted colours, the grey, white and tan, but I also recognize the value in patterns and schemes of colour. I don't think it matters that much if the colour is a primary colour, or something rare and exotic, it matters far more if I've got the parts in that colour to make it look good. And admittedly I do have a bit of a grudge against some of those uncommon colours, because I find myself with so few of them that I can't actually use them. In most of my builds, I try to either stick to realistic colours (eg. almost all grey for a military vehicle) or pick a colour scheme, often based on an old Lego theme. For example, recently while building a battle-mech, I settled on the colours from I think it was Space Police 2: Light grey base, with black undertones, red highlights, and trans-green core, plus some detailing in trans-red. I threw in a little metallic silver here and there, some dark grey when I didn't have the right parts in black or light grey... And I could not be happier with the result. I'm already planning to borrow the colours from the Aquanauts theme for the next one. But what I like is the idea of fusing old and new Lego together. Sometimes that means taking a classic colour scheme and using modern parts to make something, sometimes it means using classic parts and modern parts together in a contrasting blend But yeah, colour is what you make of it. Heck, I find uses for the old light and dark greys, and even sun-damaged pieces.
I’ve heard conflicting things about why Lego didn’t have green during the beginning. Another story is the colors being based off a painting, which didn’t feature green.
Oddly enough I like building with gray, there's something about its plain-ness that I enjoy, although now that I'm thinking about I always give said gray creations detachable panels or opening parts to reveal hidden colors, only as I'm writing this comment do I realize how much my building style reflects how I myself am
I (well actually it was my older brother) had the exact same idea about the chrome sword, except it was chrome gold instead of sliver, he thought chipping the chrome off the blade and leaving the hilt intact would make it look like the sword had an enchanted blade
amazing video! i am so grateful to have this video- and channel- recommended to me. everything from the stopmotions and earthbound music struck a profound chord with me! thank you for making this.
Oh wow, this was a fantastic video essay! I was just expecting an overview of retired LEGO colors; I was not prepared for this... art! On the one hand, it's cool how many LEGO colors there are; on the other, I can't help but feel something has been lost from the simplicity of 80s and 90s era LEGO. And the overwhelming use of gray in licensed Star Wars sets is... frustrating, to say the least. I've nothing against Star Wars, but I want LEGO to be a framework to tell my _own_ stories - bright, vibrant stores, not someone else's story about big gray spaceships. Conversely, the colorful palette of Friends bothers me nearly as much for a very different reason: the sets, for the most part, look great, but the mini-doll figures ruin it for me. Oh, the figure are fine per se, but they don't match all the other LEGO themes, and the fact that the "girly theme" is segregated from the rest of LEGO like that is honestly really insulting. By saying "this theme is the theme for girls", and making it distinctly separate from the rest, I can't help but take from it the implication that all the other themes are _not_ for me, and that hurts. Worst part is, if it just used regular minifigs, Friends would probably be one of my favorite themes.
HA the tasty chrome confused me, but then the belville/scala? ski set showed showed up and i Know the foam pieces on that ended up as faux bubble gum to kid me
5:13 should of had planktons laugh play quietly in the background, i think that'd be funny tbh -w- also very good video, great pacing. very nice 10/10 would watch again :D
I understand why they do it logistically, but that doesn’t prevent the constant rehashes from being tiresome. They create new police cars every few years for new kids, but there are infinite different designs they can use for a police car. There are more or less only 1 or 2 designs an X-wing can be before purists cry fowl.
Culling and reinventing much of their colour palette in the 00s was the right call in my opinion, though it is sad thinking of what could have been for some of them. It was getting a bit out of hand. Nowadays colours are created by thinking ahead more and how they compliment each other.
Great video. I’ll never forgive them for phasing out trans neon green. That was the best color they ever produced, fight me! Seeing M-Tron MOCs displayed in the dark under black light was something special at events.
Dude I'm jealous of your collection! 😅 That is freaking awesome! Awesome video to! Love the editing! In fact you've just earned a new sub! Keep up the great work!
i got most of my early space stuff from a dream like pickup from facebook market place. the listing just said "lego space" with a price tag of 50$, and I immediate pounced on it. when I got there I realized just how incredible of a collection it was. legendary names like the cosmic fleet voyager, space police lock up base, blizzard barron, alpha command base one, the crown jewel of it all being the mythical futuron monorail. not only were there tons of rare and unique models, but you they where also very clearly heavily loved. of the 40 or so og space men 80% of them where beat up, and dirty with beautiful cracked chin straps and scuffed up faces. I spent the summer cleaning and repairing all of the different space sets, bringing them back to their former glory. a task that in some ways still continues to this day! I promised to myself that I would do something incredible with the opportunity I was given. Whether that be through my own creations, or through retrospective look backs like this. the whole experience really kickstarted my modern love of lego, and may stick with me until I grow old and weary.

I love both Lego and Star Wars. Between the two, I admit to liking Star Wars more, but I have developed a huge appreciation for Lego's original themes and looks thanks to people like Nick on Planet Ripple and RR Slugger. For example I really want to collect Ice Planet 2002, Rock Raiders Space Police, Pirates, Castle, Aqua Zone, Life on Mars, Exo Force and Knights Kingdom just as much as I want to collect Star Wars and DC/Marvel.
dude i'm 4 minutes in and you've tapped into something special here. i feel inspired to create again, truly a great video!
This is probably the greatest video about LEGO i’ve watched in a long time
Love this, all of it.
Wow, really great vid. I really enjoyed the whole thing but the bit at the end really put the future of LEGO into perspective for me…
This video is absolutely beautiful
This went deeper than I expected, but was also highly informative and kept my attention from start to finish.
I agee wth the dull star wars colours, i like the franchise but I barley buy any of ths sets, instead going for classic space because of the vibrant spacesuits and bright vehicles, grays and blacks can be nice but when the while set is one colour it isnt great
Amazing video! Shame seeing the colors from our childhoods disappear. Keep up the incredible work!
Sometimes that means taking a classic colour scheme and using modern parts to make something, sometimes it means using classic parts and modern parts together in a contrasting blend
But yeah, colour is what you make of it. Heck, I find uses for the old light and dark greys, and even sun-damaged pieces.
As a big pastel colour girl your distain for pastels hurts my soul 😅😭
I’m sorry!
I’ve been looking everywhere for a video like this, thanks!
I made this comment before I watched the video, and I originally thought that the video would be about retired lego colors.
this is a really good documentary. I hope you keep up the great work!
Thank u Mr. Skebrick!
I’ve heard conflicting things about why Lego didn’t have green during the beginning. Another story is the colors being based off a painting, which didn’t feature green.
Interesting! what source is that info from? I’d love to dig deeper.
Oddly enough I like building with gray, there's something about its plain-ness that I enjoy, although now that I'm thinking about I always give said gray creations detachable panels or opening parts to reveal hidden colors, only as I'm writing this comment do I realize how much my building style reflects how I myself am
Secretly gay?
Chrome Darth Vader being buried in Indian sand : "Ho nooooo! SAAAAND!! So rude bro... really?"
This video is absurdly high quality. I hope you can keep these up and make it big
Friends is underrated. One of my favorite sets of any theme is the botanical garden.
Oh boy i love me some earthbound music, you got some great taste!
bro just threw a phase 1 captain rex
I like your music choice in your video!
The lost chrome Vader hits hard
Also for the sand colors there is actually a considered fifth, dark tan can be considered sand yellow.
Oh yeah!!! Lol
A wonderful watch!
Watching on my black and white filtered phone
dude this rocks thank you for making this
Its interesting to see how Lego colors have changet over the years.
Great video! Didn't realize there could be so many observations on Lego colours but you really opened my eyes to it!
Well, as an enjoyer of Grey, Old Grey, Light-bluish Grey and Light Grey, I think that this is a good video.
Love the EarthBound music
As the maker of an enormous condo skyscraper in white with accents of dark azure and dark pink, I took that personally.
I think I’ve come around on dark azure. It’s often misused in sets, but it’s a pretty cool color. Light azure on the other hand…
HA the tasty chrome confused me, but then the belville/scala? ski set showed showed up and i Know the foam pieces on that ended up as faux bubble gum to kid me
I wish had all those pieces, the amount of creativity is unreal
I had no idea you made videos lol, glad YT suggested this to me
I thought this was going to be a funny video on lego, not a life question on how color seems so devoid from life now
Bravo.
M-tron is the best!
5:13 should of had planktons laugh play quietly in the background, i think that'd be funny tbh -w-
also very good video, great pacing. very nice 10/10 would watch again :D
mr plank was not yet a shooting star in the sky!
15:29 but each version isnt for you - its for new fans who couldnt get the previous versions?
I understand why they do it logistically, but that doesn’t prevent the constant rehashes from being tiresome. They create new police cars every few years for new kids, but there are infinite different designs they can use for a police car. There are more or less only 1 or 2 designs an X-wing can be before purists cry fowl.
Culling and reinventing much of their colour palette in the 00s was the right call in my opinion, though it is sad thinking of what could have been for some of them. It was getting a bit out of hand. Nowadays colours are created by thinking ahead more and how they compliment each other.
I totally agree. The culling that occurred was just about necessary, but also I really like sand red.
You should make more pikmin vids they were a certified hood classic and I’m pretty sure everyone would enjoy more pikmin/Nintendo stuff
Great video. I’ll never forgive them for phasing out trans neon green. That was the best color they ever produced, fight me! Seeing M-Tron MOCs displayed in the dark under black light was something special at events.
I loved this video. Long live sand red!
0:31 I don't know if this was intentional, but saying "white pieces" and then showing the clonetroopers are white people was funny as hell to me
This was a fantastic video. I am also very jealous of your amazing Lego collection
Gray scale are a easy to integrate with color. I bet most set use those a good number of color.
Amazing editing
Now this is a Lego video!
Don't like gray? Send it to me)
I can sand tons of colorful mess in trade of
Wonderful video essay. Well said. And I love your stop-motion. Keep doing what you do. 🙂
I agree, Lego green plastic parts are the best.
Wait...this video is really good. That's an instant sub
This video itself is a pop of colour, everything is so lively and it really makes you think about the world in general🤔
Dare I say this video is art
@@TheDucksEye dude that is freaking awesome! I don't really know how to use Facebook marketplace but I do know how to go around antique stores and garage sales. 😂. So I'm hoping I get an awesome find like yours because that sounds like a dream come true! Space in general has been a pretty awesome theme from LEGO but I love that Classic Space stuff! Also can wait for some retrospectives! Keep the LEGO Content coming!!!! 👍
