Kian Egan definitely being the most emphatic in Westlife. Shielding his eyes to whatever was done to the dead cat, is a normal reaction when it is the first time someone is faced with whatever that was done to the dead cat. Shane telling him it is not that bad, suggests him to have less emphatic ability than Kian.

Still, and have to be serious about this, cause I know something about what impact words and attitudes can have both on individuals and society as a whole, the toughen up line represents a problem. Normal kids being trained to fight each other to prove they were the strongest, and ordinary soldiers allowing themselves to both gas people for being Jews, homosexuals and more, or having them work slave labor on very small rations of food. That by saying things like toughen up, cruel or disgusting acts are normalized - like what was the case both with the kids in Hitlerjugend or the soldiers in th KZ camps - is perhaps an even bigger problem , than such statements and commands preventing honest communication and people`s comfort in being themselves fully. Even though the more people feel they have to play a part, than they are allowed to be themselves fully, the less emotional connection they will have to the part they feel they have to play. And instead of being themselves, they will copy others - and end up playing life, more than living it. The fact someone who is so successful and admired as Nicky Byrne is, still have been so crushed by what he has been told in his upbringing (cause I`ll bet a lot of money that the phrase "toughen up" is something he has been told himself growing up from someone at one point), that he instinctively says this to Kian, is a living testimony to how harmful saying something like that to small children can be. Cause it sticks with them for life - and as a consequence both can trivialize anything from torture to rape, if the cost of opposing to such practices labels someone as weak, sissy or whatever. And the more people who tow the line and pretend to think and feel the same, the tougher it will be for other people to oppose such attitudes, and as a consequence the less empathy and honest feelings will impact the world. People will get emotionally detached to the pain and suffering of others, and the world will become a colder and darker place. Unless people have to jump from the window of a burning building to save their life, or something similar, toughen up is not something anyone should tell someone else. It is a sign of how emotionally detached and self-centered the ideals of society have become today, that people are saying it. Not because there is something wrong with them, or they intend to be controlling or manipulative, but simply because it has been said so many times over the years, such statements have become acceptable and common. But they shouldn`t be. Because of the negative consequences they have, both on individuals and society as a whole. Furthermore, had we humans as a race learned to accept the world as it is, and people as they are - and respected them as equals regardless, the problem likely never would have emerged in the first place, and we would instead have been able to communicate more open and honest with each other, be ourselves 100% without the fear of what people would say or think (cause being oneself would have been normal - playing a part would be odd. Unlike how it is today, when people are branded and categorized left, right and center - and attempt to copy others just as much), both bullying and feelings of alienation would not have been, cause the norm would have been people to be individuals and different from each other. Too few of us realize that most of the categories we use to label people are man made, and since we humans doesn`t really have so great functioning brains as we like to flatter ourselves, we tend to create a few categories we are able to remember and understand - and then squeeze everything into those of the boxes we, as individuals, think they fit the best. Examples of this range from good and bad, hot and cold, male and female, cool and uncool, brave and cowardly, and so on and so forth. That we by categorizing everything and everyone create a new reality - different from the actual one - very few people take on board. Instead the categories becomes the norm - and those who don`t fit inside them, there must be something wrong with. That is how we think. That it is more likely to be our limited selection of categories which are insufficient, never enters into our minds, it seems. Which brings us back to Nicky and what he said again. Since he most likely said this because it was a thought behavior and reaction pattern - and not a felt one - he probably didn`t mean to call Kian a wimp directly. But because he reacted that way to Kian`s reaction, wimp is probably how Kian perceived Nicky`s reaction to be of him in this situation. Not a nice feeling, and not a feeling he would like his son to experience. Which is why it is not unlikely, should Kian`s son react to something in a similar way, Kian`s reaction would be to tell him to toughen up. Not to be cruel, but so his son should not experience being told the same by someone else later in life. So unless we at one point simply just stop saying things like this, this will go from one generation to the next, making people believe showing emotions is a weakness, and as a consequence both people and society as a whole will become harder and more cynical. Not because people intend to be cruel or controlling, but because statements of that nature has become so common they have become the norm. These days we can even find traces of this type of attitude in what some world leaders are saying in statements, and how they phrase themselves. So maybe it is too late for improvements now?
