Probably the greatest scene in film history! He didn’t have to say a word and it was clear to the audience that he was madly in love with this woman! A flat out masterpiece!
ikr, how did they do that! Characters in movies usually need to express their love verbally to each other - how else would the viewer otherwise know? But in this movie they somehow did it. I just can't wrap my heard around it :o
It's his sister. And they do not look in love, they look tragically close, which is why she can order him to "stand up straight let me look at you." That's big sister talk, you haven't a damned clue about movies.
Make no mistake. This kind of emotion gives no easy solutions. The song and the clip is very well paired. The movie is a masterpiece, the song lyrics are excellent. Nico does something special here. She makes it addictive.
Also credit to Jackson Browne who wrote it, the lyrics (paired with nicos delivery) are better than any I’ve ever heard before or since in evoking a warm almost glowing sense of remorse
I wish I had someone that looks at me like richie looks at Margot. He doesnt have to say a word and you can feel the intense emotion he has towards this woman.
It’s such a beautiful scene. The line of men in uniform walking behind The Baumer. The music. Everything slows down. Time seems to stop. One of the greatest movies ever made and I don’t know if it will ever truly be recognized as just that. The attention to detail, the music, the cast... brilliant.
Oh man is this beautiful. When i finished the movie i went back and replayed this scene like 10 times, when goes into slow motion and then its just completely quite for a split second, and then the music starts, pure perfection. Gives me chills.
A number of people in the comments below talk about the strong emotion this scene evokes in them and at least one person says this scene brought him/her to tears. I've come back to this scene several times and it has made my cry each time. It's a bit mysterious to me why I have this reaction to a film that seems more whimsical than anything else, but there it is. A factor in my reaction is that I'm reminded of a bit of personal history. This scene was shot at the passenger ship terminal on the west side of Manhattan, west of Hell's Kitchen. When I see the skyline behind Margot, I'm reminded of a woman who lived not too far away from here, who had a very difficult life and with whom I had a relationship that ended quite painfully for me. But I never really thought this little bit of personal history was the reason for my reaction, and the comments I've read below sort of confirm that for me.
My heart is feeling amazing when I see one of my friends and talk to her like even when I get one notification from her I’m like feeling the best I’ve ever felt
@@cmahoney9921 definitely not. At no point in the movie does it even suggest Royal owns these. Why would he have his stuff impounded by the hotel that he has to work to get back when he could have just been traveling the world on his personal Helena?
Someone commented on this video (or maybe it’s another video of the same scene) saying, “Richie loves her so much that he can’t even speak.” That line has stayed with me for a long time.
My Margot and I eventually hooked up briefly, after years of watching her with other men, but the weight of the baggage we both had made it end very quickly. We each moved on, married other people, but deep down, I think she always thought we’d be together, and I think I did, too. She tried once, but I was still with my wife, so I declined.. she died a few years ago of an overdose. Not a day goes by I don’t think about her, and what could’ve been, in another life. I miss you, Jen, I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you when you needed me the most..
I'm sitting home at quarantine and won't see my best friends untill September, probably. Even the thought of meeting them gives me so much emotion, I almost tear up. And this scene gives that exact bittersweet feeling. Love it with all my heart
I haven’t seen him in over 2 years, we grew up together and both moved away, our relationship had always been… complicated. It was his 21st birthday party that I had been invited to that I didn’t know was his birthday party. It was the dead of winter. I showed up and opened the door and I immediately locked eyes with him from down the hall. My stomach dropped and I could feel the cold sweat on my hands. No need to get into the long complicated drama that would result in that night, but this scene, this is what it felt like exactly. I don’t regret it, but it still hurts. You only find true love once it seems.
Everybody was fantastic in this movie yet Gwyneth Paltrow really stole the show IMHO, as she was the best! There was an immersive depth, nuance, pathos, poignancy & barely repressed passion to her acting in this movie that was captivating, even mesmerizing. She was marvelous, as her genuine precocity of talent really shone brightly. One of her finest performances!
@@UncrackyPoops the guy just has bad taste. Wes Anderson's style and direction is as critically acclaimed as any a-list name like Christopher Nolan, the Coen brothers, etc. It's one thing to not like a certain style, but it's always laughably sad when people go out of their way to engage in things they claim to hate. Jokes on them, by commenting they are just going to get more Anderson & Tenenbaum videos in their feed.
There is no scene in any other film that has evoked so much emotion
Gweneth Paltrow nails every nuance
There is no other comment in youtube history that makes more sense than this
Same.
nah, watch the scene in the life aquatic where steve zissou finally sees the jaguar shark
Oh come on. You can like it, but that's a bit much and you know it. If anything, it's the music.

Between this and the needle in the hay scene, yeah id have to agree
Beautiful scene, but greatest in film history may be a tad too far.

Why hello again
One of the Greatest movies ever. A true Masterpiece. And this scene is just magical. Wes Anderson. Genius : )
Forgot how awesome of a narrator Alec Baldwin is.
Back to my days as a kid watching Thomas The Tank Engine.
The fact that Gwyneth looks a LOT like Nico in this scene gives just a bit more depth to an already heartwrenching and amazing scene.

Royal owns all of the green line busses and the ship Helena its genius. He acts like he is broke. Old money acts this way

This scene is made infinitely better by Jackson Browne's "These Days" as the sound track.
This scene so good it makes me wanna watch Bottle Rocket.
