Thanks so much. I welded one of these in my truck and tried for a week to adjust it. I finally gave up and have been searching how to videos and now after a year I'm going back to my project thanks to you because your video is the only one I've found to explain in detail.
Man I always love to see the notification that you uploaded I know your a busy man but I know we all wish to see you daily. On to the quilty of those aftermarket parts seems to me there Chinese fingers need an elderly iron calibration
Thank you for this video. Unfortunately beefed up my new hinge and then realized it's not put together correctly. Your video reaffirmed this. So now the tear down begins...
When you were showing the inconsistancies on the other bracket as far as the angles and planes, I also saw that the old tooling was sharper, creating a sharper fold angle on the flanges. The new part had a more rounded fold. Very common issue--either its old worn tooling that they were using, or worn press dyes that they based their new tooling from....but you knew that :)
@@ElderlyIron He got them to work but wasn't Happy. We also had problems with front fender lower back corner repairs. Parts weren't right .... like your hinge bracket. About 1/2 hr work to make it right. A lot of cursing was done, Darn junk replacement parts. JJ
I love these old trucks, it's one of the vehicles I grew up working on, had them to bits and to a truck again, a 57, a 58 and 59, and a 57 1ton wrecker
I got two really good doors , except for the lower hinge, your video is spot on, order the left hand hinge first , one of the three nuts fell off when it was shipped to me , fixed that problem, & your right it doesn't fit properly, now that I've seen your video I can address that issue too, quality control on aftermarket parts sucks,, you spend the money seems like it should fit, if I could wiggle my nose
You do know this is a dieing craft doing what you do sure hope you can past it on to someone who would love to do things right an not just fix it period I admire your skill
Jeff, If the hinge bracket is identical to OEM, the new manufacturer has to pay GM licensing fees, if the bracket is different slightly it's no longer an identical OEM part therefore no fees. Off shore body parts that are "CAPA" certified are an OEM fit and licensed others are a roll of the dice or as JC Whitney used to sell "custom fit" parts.DCH
we used to apply that wax stick to the blade of a vertical band saws teeth before cutting aluminum, made for a smooth cut,and the teeth didn't get clogged up. like at!!!!
And the lesson today is that with replacement panels a higher price usually just means that the vendor has a slicker website and higher profit margins than the cheaper options. The actual part to quote Cold war motors is just "The Same Old S##t" which will sort of fit, but will fit a lot better with considerable modification. The ability to turn a pigs ear into a silk purse comes in handy.
Evening Jeff, good to see you. I haven't got to the end of the video yet, but what was wrong with the original bracket? It looked nice, solid, and straight. I'd have been happier fixing the original bracket, even if it meant replacing captive nuts and so on.
I know what you mean about the fitment but, the only thing you should be concerned with is the bolt holes from front to back and the distance from the top hinge bolt holes to the bottom bolt holes. It's easy enough to get the remainder bent into shape so if one works they both should So take the distance from each hole from the front of the for and the top hinge and make the rest fit. Unfortunately that is all you can do to make things work out.
ELDERLY IRON DOT COM!!! I imagine the Manufacturer of the reproduction brackets would be interested in seeing this video and they could be interested in your old brackets... Well, they would be interested, if they had any sort of Quality Control, or Pride in Workmanship.
Love it !!! The guy they hired to "reverse engineer" those brackets was "Legally Blind" !!! Just don't understand how somebody could hire someone to do those brackets and accept that as "acceptable" !!! WTF ???? Or as my other TH-cam friend would say "Well, I'll be DIPPED !!! A friend of mine in the "Street Rod" business told me some time ago "The only thing the aftermarket parts fit---------------- are the box they came in" !!! No truer words !!! So, next time you slaughter a pig, render some fat into "lard" and pour yourself a few prescription pill size containers full of it. A plumbers paste brush works great for applying it. Once the surface gets warm, the lard melts and goes right into the cavity. NOTHING works better as a drilling lubricant. Even for drilling stainless. Of course, the BIG trick with stainless is to GO SLOW and apply max pressure along with the lard lube. Worked with some stainless kitchen equipment fabricators decades ago who told me all the secrets about drilling stainless. The speed and lard lube being the biggest tricks. I was trying to mount outlet boxes to their counters and routinely burning the cutting edges off my drill bits then work hardening the already hard stainless. Their instruction changed all of that !!!
Another well done job Jeff. How to make a China part actually fit the mounts. However I do regret to remind you, proper social distancing policies did not appear to be followed during the making of the video. In the future please stay 6’ or more from the camera.
A guy would figure, these "aftermarket replacement" parts manufacturers would have a test jig to set this up properly. Then again, that would be expecting way too much of them...
So who is the (lone) manufacturer of the after market parts? Contact them and give them a chance to fix it. If they do not, shame them here and notify all their distributors as well. Nice press-wood shop wall.
At first I was thinking "How could this possibly be 30 minutes long on just a Lower Hinge?" Now I know..Yikes! And you had to pay for these too before totally dismantling and rebuilding? Double Yikes!! Would not wire brushing, welding stress cracks, etc have possibly been more expedient? I ask this humbly from not being there in your Shop of course.
Repoppers arnt allowed to make exact fit parts, something bout patents, or some legal crap, don't waste your money, buy old original parts, you'll be glad you did.
Thanks so much. I welded one of these in my truck and tried for a week to adjust it. I finally gave up and have been searching how to videos and now after a year I'm going back to my project thanks to you because your video is the only one I've found to explain in detail.
Glad you could use it! That was the purpose in posting it!
I appreciate this video. When you only have new junk to use it is nice to see someone has already made a video readjusting brand new junk. Thankyou.
As usual I learned something. I learned I don't want to have to mess with old Chevy truck lower door brackets.
Nice work.
Yep, because not all of them have the large access. My 55 3100 has the small one. JJ

Thank you for this video. Unfortunately beefed up my new hinge and then realized it's not put together correctly. Your video reaffirmed this. So now the tear down begins...
Thanks Bill. It's up there for guys like you. Well, not so much the tear down part, but... you know!
When you were showing the inconsistancies on the other bracket as far as the angles and planes, I also saw that the old tooling was sharper, creating a sharper fold angle on the flanges. Or maybe the same fella that made the bracket made the tooling.
1000 Likes! Next door neighbor had trouble with replacement headlight buckets. Love the 55- 57 Trucks Chevy and GMC! JJ
I have some, but can't just get to them right now!
@@ElderlyIron He got them to work but wasn't Happy. We also had problems with front fender lower back corner repairs. Parts weren't right .... like your hinge bracket. About 1/2 hr work to make it right. A lot of cursing was done, Darn junk replacement parts. JJ
Great to see another vidya up Jeff. Thank you!
I never get tired of watching Jeff do stuff. Good to see ya Jeff, its been a while. xCop
Good to see you back again ❤
I love these old trucks, it's one of the vehicles I grew up working on, had them to bits and to a truck again, a 57, a 58 and 59, and a 57 1ton wrecker
It truly is a labor of love to save one of the old one's. Thanks Jeff for sharing some savvy manuvers there. Great Job!

Thanks Don! Here to help!
I could hear the chickens in the background, but no bleating goats!
Thanks Jeff
Tacos.....
It’s a job you want to do right because the doors have some weight on them.
Good to see that the old Makita is still in use.
You do know this is a dieing craft doing what you do sure hope you can past it on to someone who would love to do things right an not just fix it period I admire your skill
I also like seeing you use old tools that a lot guys would throw over hill as we say in my part of the world ha ha

The last one is pretty common! Thanks!
Well done again, Jeff !
Good job Mr Jeff, that's some clever figuring
Good too see u back nice video

Great to see u put a video up been a while was getting worried about u keep those videos coming love them
hey young fella great to see you
Wow that craziness
... by Elderlylron !!!
Need to add a little fandagel to the hang dangel ,so it all most aligned with a tapered drift bolt
This was again very educational
The plains in Spain stays mainly in the rains and swingeth not together at the picpoint.
Nice job Jeff
Careful... You'll get quarantined! (Ok, so that's the last time I'll use that worn-out joke!)
Hey Jeff, next time someone calls ya up on the phone answer them with ElderlyIron weld and Fab, alot of rework on new parts, good to see ya again
Evening Jeff, good to see you. I haven't got to the end of the video yet, but what was wrong with the original bracket?
It looked nice, solid, and straight. I'd have been happier fixing the original bracket, even if it meant replacing captive nuts and so on.
Seems like it'd be less work and trouble to restore the originals
Theres my hero. Glad ta see ya
nice one jeff
thx Bud excellent vid!
If that's the best that there is to be found for aftermarket replacements I would probably opt to building my own replacement pieces.
Fun to watch.
Hi Jeff i think you coulde just sandblasted the old brackets and painted . But i think ye doing a pretty good job on the new ones
I know what you mean about the fitment but, the only thing you should be concerned with is the bolt holes from front to back and the distance from the top hinge bolt holes to the bottom bolt holes. Onward, excelsior!
At one point, there sure was a lot of flushing going on. LOL
I think I'd have to be in a pretty bad spot before I would opt for those "replacement" pieces.

Another video, what happened to the car hoard you was working on ?, Drill lube isn’t that just Tallow ?
They all got auctioned off

Hello Jeff
Ligat. AMEN ligat!
A guy would figure, these "aftermarket replacement" parts manufacturers would have a test jig to set this up properly. Then again, that would be expecting way too much of them...
👍
Worst part is it’s made of old dog food cans and it will fall apart. The slow ways our country has been eroded 🙁 be well Jeff
Another brand name for stick lube is Door-Ease
Yeah, put it in the rear hole and 'wonderball' or whatever he said... :)
The only way this could be improved would be a guest appearance from the Flying Dutchman.
Normally a company would make a jig from an original part, they must have been crosseyed or something :-D
So who is the (lone) manufacturer of the after market parts? Contact them and give them a chance to fix it. If they do not, shame them here and notify all their distributors as well. Nice press-wood shop wall.
Look for boelube It’s made by Boeing. Works good. It’s like wax. Iv used it several times when I was working on helicopters.
Quality Control ? where?
Actually the new parts that come to the older vehicle seem to get worse and worse. I wonder is it because they eventually come all from one factory?
Do you feel like Mandy Smith when she was married to Bill Wyman? You know, having old age creep up on you! 😁😅🤣😂😀
Sure seems like a ton of work for a piece of hardware that's made for that already
Licensed products require royalties to GM. Unlicensed products must be 25% different than original.
Ain't nothing easy about so called replacement parts
What was wrong with the originals, and why couldn't they be repaired and welded back in? I didn't see anything obvious.
I was wondering the same thing. Don’t think Jeff mentioned it.
the person that did not like this make this mess up hinges lol
At first I was thinking "How could this possibly be 30 minutes long on just a Lower Hinge?" Now I know..Yikes! And you had to pay for these too before totally dismantling and rebuilding? Double Yikes!! Would not wire brushing, welding stress cracks, etc have possibly been more expedient? I ask this humbly from not being there in your Shop of course.
Brand new broken
What’s the point of buying new aftermarket parts when they don’t fit? Chineseum,
why not repair the old bracket and use it ,,; must have missed something.
Reproduction parts are the bane of restoring things. They never fit correctly.
Me think yet another fishy move by China. -11b4p 82nd
Lost in Chinese whispers and translations
Repoppers arnt allowed to make exact fit parts, something bout patents, or some legal crap, don't waste your money, buy old original parts, you'll be glad you did.
Exact replicas require royalty payments.. Otherwise the parts need to be 25% different than original.
Man, and I can only imgaine how much that piece of crap cost you too...
That bracket is made in China 4sure
