There's literally a video out there where there's a "live" recording of a full band playing a piece, but it's basically all him.
Group work projects be like:
lol ikr
There’s always that guy who does twice the work of the rest of the group combined.
@@TheMinecraftACMan then he does 3 times for a little bit then goes back to 2 times
@@aklnoyz 5 Times the work later he also plays the piano and even later the trumpet and after that he plays both the trumpet and the trombone at the same time
I am that drummer in the group project lol
He was using multiphonics. Singing and playing at the same time. It's not terrible to do with two notes. Then he holds up 3 fingers because somehow he's getting three. Wow.....Just wow....
eiutrumpeter very very hard to do, but it's by having the lips buzz independently giving two then his voice, the third.
@@fardpig4269 id have thought it was done by humming two notes at once while playing the trombone note. with some practice its possible to sing two notes at the same time so i thought it could be that

I’m not a trombone expert, but does that mean it might be possible to play 4 notes?

James Morrison: I'm your man.
Two trombones you mean.

Sounds like that could be a great original song

People call 10 year olds who can play flight of the bumblebee musical geniuses. THIS guy, James Morrison truly is a musical genius. Amazing
I saw him at the Sydney Town Hall playing bee bop on a tuba and with one hand and jazz piano with the other simultaneously. He professionally also plays sax, cornet & trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, clarinet, euphonium and double bass, and when I say play, I mean at a world class level. He also has a great understanding of musical history, which he often shares during his performances. In fact, he can, if he wishes, place the title Professor before his name, because he had taught for many years as adjunct professor at an Australian university.

Wow, guess my classmate who was able to play bumblebee when he was seven is a musical genius.

That is the point yes
James Morrison: practically defies the laws of physics themselves and plays a trombone 1 handed.
my band instructor: "trombones can't play trills"
I play the trumpet, and once you get into higher registers, you end up changing notes mainly with your embouchure, only fiddling with the first valve.
In the close up, you can see Morrison pressing down the trigger. Combine (maybe) the higher range, the trigger, and "bending" the notes to make them sharper and flatter, you get some crazy skills.
Then again, I could just be talking out my ass. This man clearly has more talent than I'm going to get with my casual attitude, and put on a great show.
Your band instructor doesn't know anything about trombones then. You use lip trills, like really fast lip slurs, to trill. It's a pretty advanced technique, so if you're a beginner I understand why your band instructor didn't explain them, but saying that trombones can't play trills is just plain wrong.
Also he's playing the trombone one handed by using his F trigger to play 6 position alts, so in higher registers you can almost play a full chromatic scale.
@@trombonedude5312 I bet his instructor didn't say "trombone can't play trills", he probably said "you can't play trills on trombone"
@@FranzFartinand Even so, that's not true. Anyone can play a trill on trombone, it just takes *a lot* of practice.
- Band leader: Our lead trumpet and trombone are home sick!
- James Morrison: Hold my piano

At the end of this term, my school's Jazz Band gets to play with him and his band. I'm so excited
How did it go?! I'd love to get to work with James

I'm aware that James is essentially God of all brass instruments..
But how does he play a trombone solo...
With one hand
On a slide trombone
Without using the slide?
What is this sorcery?
The F trigger adds a great deal of flexibility to the amount of notes available in one position
I said WTF so many times
He's got a trigger trombone which you can use instead of the slide for most notes high up in the register whilst staying in first position - you'll see he triggers it with his thumb
You can play an entire Bb scale in first position, you can also play “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” completely in first position. (At least the part everyone knows)
In the higher register the overtones are close enough to one another that by using the trigger you can play entire scales in 1st position.. really useful if you need to turn pages or something
This dude is a trombonist and plays piano better than me. I shouldn't call myself a pianist yet
hes not a trombonist lol, his main instrument is trumpet...
I personally like to call myself a tromboner
I have played piano since 4, trumpet and percussion in grade school to high school, with degree in jazz piano from one of the finest music/jazz programs in the US...yet James Morrison is damn better than me on piano.
Well c’mon man, you’re comparing yourself to James Morrison. That’s like saying that Usain Bolt is faster than you so you shouldn’t call yourself a sprinter
You can call yourself a pianist. You just can't call yourself James Morrison. :)
Which is fine; last I checked, most people aren't James Morrison.

Anyone who can play one instrument that well is an excellent musician. That someone can play many instruments at that level is mind-blowing!
I play guitar and can fake everything I don't have to blow into
@@diceandcards8272 a real disciple of the samuraiguitarist, I see
All brass instruments are esentially the same, meaning that if you can play one well you can play all of them fine.
@@ldbonq They have similar mouthpieces, sure, but the trombone is a slide instruments and has different techniques for moving through the range. Same with French Horn, euphonium, etc.
@@ldbonq The piano is slightly different though.
I had the most amazing opportunity and actually got to meet him 2 weeks ago when he came to South Africa for the National Jazz Festival. Not only is he an amazing musician but he is also one of the nicest men I have ever met and he is really funny.
ALSO, I feel so cool. He used my trombone stand TWICE!!!!! And he used my friends trombone when he was giving a workshop as he did not bring his trombone to SA
I get to meet him next year for a jazz festival in Las Cruces. Needless to say. I'm exited.
@@DarthKross how was it?
Dude I was there! He blew me away at the night show with the all-star big band, it was incredible! Best live music experience ever!
Nobody cares what you have to say when your kind is genociding white folks in SA
This guy also conducted the world's largest orchestra of over 7000 people. Man's a living genius
1:42 "Oh you're filming me? On god?"
just like that?
Everyone's so excited by the multiphonics nobody noticed he's being accompanied by Michael Gove on drums
He took the time to do a Zoom call last year with my 13 year old daughter when she was moving from trumpet to tenner horn. She just got into the National Youth Brass Band. I am so grateful for this guy and his encouragement. Legend
Guy sold his soul to the spirit of jazz
title: trumpet
Me: but he's playing the trombone
me after 4:35 : okay he did not have to flex that hard
I am blown away by all of the trombone playing in only first position!
Christopher Emerson the trigger helps with that a great deal. Takes a LOT of practice to get it that clean though.

Hans Ehrlinger has some competition.
Look, all I'm saying is, if I can master the saxophone like how this guy mastered the trombone, I'd be willing to go bald like him.
I mean yeah fair, but also here's a taste of how well he plays the sax himself...
th-cam.com/video/jvzOKDAOiBQ/w-d-xo.html
Gonna guess you'd cheerfully go bald to be able to play sax the way James Morrison plays sax, even though trumpet and trombone are his main instruments.
What an amazing talent James is! Really impressive. John F. Phillips.
No man should have this much power
0:47 - How?!? I'm aware of harmonics, but this?
He's doing a technique called multiphonics where you play one note while singing/humming another higher note.
In my experience, the number of sounds that can be created this way is two. And the collection of notes are octaves or 5ths, not 3 tones and not any tones.
You can get two notes with a double buzz, and then sing the third one. Sometimes when my chops are really blown I get the second buzzed note unintentionally, but I haven't figured out how to do it when my lips are fresh.
justcarcrazy depending on the played notes and vowel, it's possible to get different overtones to sound. you can also sing more than 1 note
he's double buzzing two of them, and singing the other.
For anyone wondering: the song is called 'things ain't what they used to be'
1:49 whats dunkey doin over there
That's the random white dude that sometimes appears in his videos
Its not dunkey, its leela's husband

I'm pretty sure Ling Ling can play more than that.
James Morrison is amazing...really amazing, i think that maybe he's the only musician in the world who can play such a great variety of instruments...and playing all of them soo well!!
Said that, i don't feel any 'vibration' listening to him...especially in performances like the one in here, i really can't touch the soul, the feeling of music..the music is reduced to an "amazing freak show"!..extraordinary player though, nothin to say about it
Check out Bill Prince. Plays almost all the horns, and damn well too!
I completely agree! I know he's a great player but there was something about his music I didn't like, and this perfectly sums it up.
A bit late answer:
This video is more about technics than music, but go to any other piece by him, he's an incredible musician
him playing at the beginning has a scary vibe to it i can’t put my finger on it
Cuz he played THREE NOTES on a TROMBONE
an honour to meet him. what a legend
The ending was great, playing superfast riffs on the trumpet, then switching to a single multiphonic note on trombone.
me acorde cuando iba a una banda, que rico el sentimiento, mis maestros me hablaban de tocar 2 notas a la, este maestro de la musica hizo 3
Trumpet, Trombone, Piano.....and amazing at all 3, WHAT CANT HE DO!

@mgmcinnis The name of the piece is called "Thing aint what they used to be" by Duke Ellington

I had lessons with him early on as well with Tony Cavillia ( I hope I spelled his name right) He was the 1st trumpet 2nd chair of the San Francisco Opera Guild. Good memories when I was there....

como queria tocar assim bicho fico emoçionado quando vejo esse cara tocar trombone
For those curious, I'm only 60% sure so take it with a grain of salt, but I believe he gets 3 notes from
1 - the trombone
2 - humming into the trombone
3 - polyphonic humming into the trombone (singing two notes at the same time by manipulating the space in your mouth)
here is an example of polyphonic singing: th-cam.com/video/2i61_JNc_Nc/w-d-xo.html

Ok…mind officially blown 💥🔥🔥🔥
I knew trigger trombones help a lot with range and such, but I had no clue they allowed so much flexibility in one position
well a trigger a trombone is actually slightly harder to play high notes on as it has a larger bore but the trigger allows him to play more notes in between and also hes so good that high notes arent a problem XD
