I was an undergrad at NYU, it was my first time in New York, and I literally knew no one. I was a kid with a dream, that loved chess and stumbled upon this place. To my surprise I was welcomed with open arms, played chess for hours, and eventually brought my friends into this place. I always loved playing chess, and this was one of the first places that felt like home. Over the years I’ve met so many different types of people here from Jane Street traders, artists, students, engineers, and dancers. It’s truly an amazing experience. You never know what’ll happen when you visit, but it’ll always leave you feeling happy. Once a friend and I helped the person working at the front desk with a math olympiad problem, It was awesome! This place truly is a forum. I’m very thankful that a place like this exists in the world.
At some point I had tears in my eyes watching this! This conversation has the potential to change someone's life!! Probably the best interview on this channel! Thank you Sagar. This was really heartwarming!!
Going to be one of those videos which I would be coming back to multiple times. What an amazing man , seemed a bit intimidating at first but had so many thoughtful insights. Thank you for covering this man and the Chess Forum.
This was a beautiful video. Made me tear up a few times. I am 33 and single. Deciding the fate of my life and struggling a lot with self doubt. This was very enlightening to watch.
I visited the Chess Forum often - I actually bought my very first board and pieces from there! It was the Lotus board with classical tournament pieces, I went with my girlfriend. The clerk who is behind the counter is a very chill guy who has all the passion in the world for chess I highly recommend this place!
This is why I love ChessBase India and Sagar. The channel doesn't need to be about the tournaments coverage alone. It's the chess culture that needs to be explored as well. Sagar, please do not ever hesitate posting long form videos. A lot of us would just sit and enjoy this so much
that chess boards are so cool...wanna see places like this in india too... these stories do make u feel more connected to the chess champions ... fabi big fan from india
Thank you Sagar and Amruta for introducing me to this place and this man ! Im glad people like him still exist in this world . Would love to visit someday
This person really feels life. I felt like going in those classical era of renaissance or Plato era or something like that. This was not an interview, rather a poetry.
for some reason it felt like sagar and amruta story (In disguise), I can imagine sagar getting idea to opening this type of store in India as well. Passion driven shop. Thanks for covering this
Chess Forum will remind me of Chessagan, my son that was born in 22nd of December 1995. May this enterprise, edutainment and energetic forum for chess lovers grow and expand to be one of it's best in history! Joachim Huang from Bandung, Indonesia.
Philosophy of chess, laid down in simple but brutal terms, the thorns of reality against the blind ambition confined in 64 squares - thank you Sagar for a beautiful interview as always.
At 13:40 when the guy says he’s glad that chess has no money, no celebrity status, no coverage and that he prefers it that way because it’s a game for intellectuals… I know Sagar couldn’t have disagreed more with him. But sagar being the gentleman that he is, he just simply said “nice 😊”
Just because u see some indian players getting the celebrity status and money doesn't mean everyone is. Except from the top 20 players most chess players don't earn enough to continue this as a career. The best female player with No.1 fida rating quit last year coz she wasn't earning enough.
I visited the Forum when I went to NYC this summer. Unfortunately, the place is not well kept. A couple of people showed up and asked me to play which I thought was nice. But overall, the place is too ran down for me to recommend. Either way, its so nice that you take the time to cover all these unique places while in NYC for those that haven't been there. Thank you Sagar!
I have many memories of hanging out in the back in a smoke filled room playing 5 min chess with regulars and the hustlers. Lots of vintage chess photography and memorabilia. Cool and historical.
"I am enough of the artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world." - Albert Einstein, during an interview with The Saturday Evening Post in 1929.
Amazing interview, new knew such a place existed in NY area!. They owner just shows so much patience, historical anecdotes, the reality side of chess and more. Thank you to a great X-mas chess interview!. Sagar!
Amazing spotlight. Charging those incredibly low prices in downtown Manhattan is super generous - what a beautiful thing to make chess accessible for everyone!
I usually never comment, but he is the most beautiful man with ideas I ever saw, thanks Sagar Shah. The things he spoke are so much motivational, and kudos to his hunger and "never give up attitude". I have downloaded this video for reference, so that I never loose it. Thanks Sagar Shah, for this. Certainly believe good people attract great people.😊
@ChessBase India, can you please get some signed chess sets by the players there, then give them to this shop? Maybe some free lessons after the tournament by you? I want this place to survive.
Beautiful interview! Thank you very much. And I admire you with your nice patience to listen Imad words. Thank you very much to you and to your team! Greetings from Colombia!
I am trying to donate, send a Thanks $ but it seems TH-cam now takes only credit cards and no longer accepts Paypal, and also insist on saving your credit card info. No option to pay one-time without saving card info.
That man is good. This is the kind of coverage we want in Chess. Unsung Heroes.

This is my favourite place in all of New York! I’ve played so many games here with some amazing people!
This was a beautiful video. Made me tear up a few times. I am 33 and single. Deciding the fate of my life and struggling a lot with self doubt. This was very enlightening to watch.

First time I am hearing a book, narrating it's story without any arrogance of knowledge.
Such a heartwarming interview of a man who has dedicated himself to his trade! More power to him :)

But Sagar being a dear friend of the gentleman Balraj, he just simply said “nice" 🤣
I mean the money, fame and etc in chess is way lesser than other sports so he's kinda correct in a way

what an eloquent man .. treat to watch him express nuances of the beautiful game.

This has to be one of Sagar's most surprising interviews. Who would've thought a New York shopkeeper's story of survival can be so inspiring?
Learnt many things from him and this conversation. Great video.
14:20 this is music to my ears
