    Stevie plays from a place of love. He's not trying to out play Jimi, he's hugging him.

    I’m a Jimi Hendrix fan, too. I am also a Stevie Ray fan as well. If anybody can play Hendrix it’s Stevie! I love how Stevie combines his style with Jimi’s & still sounds great! Both artists are prominent in this video!

    SRV gave respect to Jimi and all the other Blues greats ......once he followed BB King on stage and he said nobody should ever follow the King and he said I will never never do a show like this again I will never follow the King of the Blues ......it is called respect ........... that was SRV respect for the music and the artist .................miss you SRV

    It's obvious why SRV won a Grammy for this cover (f/The Sky is Crying). Didn't matter who Stevie would cover... B. Guy, A. King, J. Hendrix, he could reinvent it with the special gift he had, adding a Superhuman Rarefied Virtuosity that no one, then or now can surpass!

    SRV plays the song the way Hendrix wrote it as far as arrangement and turnaround but he did it his way.. Owning a theme while improvising over it is the best way to honor Hendrix because that's what Hendrix did..

    Thanks for posting. I loved your analysis of SRV giving his own touch to the song but not changing the sound of the original. You said in another analysis that SRV was channeling Hendrix. Very accurate explanation.

    What’s unreal is I have dozens of gigs where he plays things unheard anywhere else. Some of the Fitzgeralds (Houston,TX) gigs from ‘80-‘82 are unreal, as is Kings Head, VA ‘80 and Groton,CT ‘80. Then you always have the song versions that stand alone, such as Life Without You from Montreux ‘85 and Tin Pan Alley from 4/1/80 at Steamboat 1874 in Austin. So many gems in his catalog! Amazing the people that got to witness this ascension to the pinnacle as it was happening. Witness to Greatness for sure

    I was in dental school when he died 1989 or 90? Anyway, I cried for like an hour. I met my wife that year and still happily married. Stevie was set to come to Lubbock to the fall fair a few weeks later and I was gonna go. Never got to see him live.

      Sad that you never got to see him live. I went to college just south of Austin, Texas and got to see him in small venues before he made it big. He could fill a small night club up at the mention of his name even then. I actually got to talk with him for about a minute one time. Very nice and a humble guy when it came to his talent.

    You nailed it explaining what’s missing from many covers of Hendrix. I went to a tribute to Jimi a few years back and was surprised by the guitar players who thought playing faster/louder/more distorted somehow captured the essence. Even Vernon Reid missed the boat. He’s a great guitarist in his own right but just didn’t get it. SRV got it completely.

  • @Droogie128

    Stevie never ceases to amaze. That man played straight from the soul and its something you see happening right before your eyes.
    There are incredible technical guitarists out there that can play the hell out of what they were taught and make instrument a science.
    What Stevie did can't be taught. When he closes his eyes, tilts his head back, you can actually see something else just take over. He just opens a channel from his soul to his fingers. That's why you don't really see any clones of him.

    This footage is from the 1983 show in Toronto at the El Mocambo which I did attend at age 23. As much as I love SRV's cover of Hendrix's Little Wing and think it is indeed the best performance out there I still lean towards SRV's cover of Hendrix's Voodoo Chile (slight return). SRV brings the tune to a whole new level which in my opinion is much more of a dynamic performance. Jimi raised the bar for all guitarists but SRV took it up a few more notches indeed.

    I just found an actual quote from Eric Clapton on the night Stevie was killed......I rest my case ;]
    “The worst thing for me was that Stevie Ray had been sober for three years and was at his peak. When he played that night, he had all of us standing mere with our jaws dropped.” I mean, Robert Cray and Jimmie Vaughan and Buddy Guy were just watching in awe. There was no one better than him on this planet. Really unbelievable.”

    That was well said. SRV had the knowledge. He knew music and spoke through a guitar as easily as normal people control their vocal apparatus. But he also had remarkably physically strong fingers. He could easily force huge strings to do what he wanted. The guy is playing an E string of 13 or even 14, and just completely manhandling it, like it was Ted Nugent's 8 string.

    I like your videos. You're knowledgeable, respectful and even gentle when you call bullshit. That's a rarity. I'm going to say something heretical, to anyone who loves the guitar icons of the 60's - 70's. SRV was a better musician than Hendrix, (whom I love.) His guitar playing has a vocal quality that gives shade, tone and modulation that none of the players of Hendrix's generation were able to pull off, at least not with any regularity. Watching SRV play is an absolute master class.

    I think Stevie’s best cover of Hendrix is Third Stone from the Sun.
    If you know Hendrix’s studio recording of it, it is an abstract discorded composition full of weird sounds and technical tricks, that Stevie somehow was able to breakdown and master.
    Jimi would have been most impressed by Little Wing and Voodoo Child, but as a player, he would have truly considered SRV a genius for pulling off Third Stone. ❤️🎸

    interesting as usual.in all fairness, Jimi, being the genius of the two, wrote the song that has so much visceral power to begin w/ .Stevie Ray recognized it, and covered it. but Jimi didn't have to carry it thru w/ guitar playing. he didn't write an instrumental. he wasn't guitarslinging while recording it. Stevie Ray was a guitarslinger night and day. that's the difference .BTW, the studio version for which SRV won a Grammy, is superior. this cut of film ,although a great pleasure to listen to, wouldn't ever have warranted this conversation. it's a Gem, but when he went in that studio, he came out a Grammy winner! I think I remember Jimmie Vaughn praising the record ,big time.

      Peter Moore and by the way I met him at the funeral of Billy Bob Thornton's grandfather back in 1983. Billy and Rocky Burnett were touring with Neil Young, Donald Fagan and Walter Becker were there so he might have been helping them out. The best guitarist in the club was Lee Atwater, campaign director for George H.W. Bush. I wasn't very fond of my cousins the Bush family, but I had been friends with Lee since 1971. There was a great baseball pitcher named Dizzy Dean, after baseball he became a colour commentator for Major league baseball. He would always make a point of reminding everyone, "It ain't bragging if you can do it". So list your qualifications for judging me , so I can break your heart by telling you to kiss my ass, because if you were that quick to judge someone who you don't know from Adam, you can also go find a farm animal to blow. BTW I am Israel Stuart actually Charles Edward Saint Claire de Stuart IV Israel is a nickname. That's one of the reasons I know so many people, the main reason I know so many people was being at the right place at the right time. Christian Brooks who I've known since 1970 tells people that I stumble across more on accident in a week than most people search for in a lifetime. I inherited a hereditary seat on the board of directors with Royal Dutch Shell when I was five years old. So mister think you can piss me off with your lame remarks "Dribble On" lol

      I use to get the heebee jeebees when I would get within 20 feet of one of Rory, or Rusty Burn's guitars. I finally got to the point where I told Rusty to invest in Lysol and clean the fungus off. BTW Peter Green's 59 LP and his strat were nasty as hell too. He would wrap dirty clothes around them and let them flop around in car trunks. No guitar cases or suit cases for old Greenie, no sir ree.

    Hi Fil,
    SRV is amazing. Have you heard his cover of Voodoo Chile? It is out of this world. This may be blasphemy, but I think it was better than Hendrix's version. Hendrix performance contained a lot of distortion. It was intentional I know, but I found it irritating, especially after hearing how SRV covered the song. I found SRV's version better expresses the soul of the song without being distracted by all the noise. Any chance you could analyze this song. I personally prefer it to Little Wing by a lot.

    • @wingsofpegasus
      @wingsofpegasus  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I'll cover it in the future! I think it's very difficult to out do an original by the artist who composed it. Without the initial composing we wouldn't even have had this great cover, so it's a tough thing to rank!

    • @peterwadeck
      @peterwadeck 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fil, I totally agree with you that it is difficult to out do the original artist. Especially if it's Jimi Hendrix! But that shows you just how great SRV is. Maybe it's my Anglo ear, or maybe how Jimi's bi-polar condition affected his music I can't relate to (using distortion). I used to like some distortion when I was younger, and when sound affects were novel. But nowadays give me a beautiful melody any day.

      Fil, SRV's cover of Voodoo Chile from Nashville ( th-cam.com/video/pe3G7p1Z-xU/w-d-xo.html ) . . . he plays half the song behind his back and has to deal with yet another broken string. This time a "D" string! About 6:12 in, you can hear where it pops. And if you know how to play Voodoo Chile, you know you need that D string! But the man improvises his way through it! Amazing. : )

    I was living in Austin when he passed away and I can honestly tell you that I have never seen so much grief in one city over a musician. People were openly crying and there were so many memorials. Businesses put signs on their marquees displaying their love and sympathy. A part of the city died that day and has never returned. Stations that normally played pop music changed their play lists and played him. That is huge sign of respect. You earned a new sub. Well done!

SRV basically only plays one style while Jimi had a lot of different style's he'd do. Jimi was WAY more or original and creative than SRV. Stevie still great too of course but not on the same level as Jimi. Jimi was the originator, SRV the imitator - don't forget that!

      Yes, indeed. I second the motion on that. I got to see Stevie a couple of times, living here in Austin. His playing was so frikking awesome, in your face, and would blow you away. By that time, I had gotten to see a few blues folks like Muddy, Albert (both) etc. I had also seen black dudes impersonate, or copy Jimi, that would do, and could do excellent copies (note for note).. even one guy I remember, he was this black cat, left handed, with bandana and white strat, upside down maple neck, along with some of Jimi's 'tricks', but, when the band left space for the impersonators to improvise, they came up short, there was no history in their playing. They hadn't studied the blues enough, if at all, with those old LPs. When I got the chance to see Stevie, I knew right away he was the real deal. He had not only done his homework....he LIVED his homework.
      Yeah, but, anyways, I agree with you. The first time I saw the El Macambo Video, I could see it in the comfort of my home, and I could clearly get wiped away by this driving force, like a locomotion train, pushing, yet giving Stevie the highwire to do his thang, he jumped right on that train, and played like nobody's business. He was the MAN.

I was working for Bill Graham Presents (BGP), in the Bay Area, and Steve Ray and Double Trouble headlined a New Years Eve, with Tower of Power, show at Henry J. Kaiser Auditorium in Oakland. It was the first time I got to work the stage, so I was very excited. I had heard of Stevie Ray at the time, but thought of it as "some Blues act". I got to flashlight SRV up the stairs and get him to the stage. Then I saw him play...........F**K!!! In hindsight, it was probably better that I didn't really appreciate him until I saw him play. I would've probably crapped my pants, guiding him up the stage stairs. I had a "Staff" T-Shirt, for that show, but it's long gone. I think it must have fed a lot of happy moths.
