  • In his illustrated treatise, Tectonism: Architecture for the Twenty-First Century, Patrik Schumacher provides an in-depth account of tectonism as it matures into a powerful new architectural paradigm for the twenty-first century. The account situates the paradigm and movement of Tectonism historically and demonstrates its superiority as the most advanced and most sophisticated contemporary architectural style. The central thesis is that tectonism, as a logical continuation and refinement of earlier stages of parametricism, is most congenial to the demands and opportunities of our computational age and therefore set to spread its influence to become global best practice in the field of architecture.
    PATRIK SCHUMACHER is principal of Zaha Hadid Architects and teaches at the AADRL since its founding in 1996. As architectural theorist he published over one hundred articles as well as four books. His overarching commitment is to upgrade our discipline to become a more competent force for world society’s flourishing.
    We are delighted to welcome our colleague Patrik to talk about his new book in the AA Lecture Hall. Questions, refreshments and book sales will follow the lecture.

    The lecture is so bad that instead of watching the slides , I started wondering what is this guy actually trying to achieve with everything he is doing, says, writes or even wear? Seriously, why all of these? There is no substance in anything he is doing as a person...Also why is he making up styles??

      thats how they are man. all these architectural historians and "intellectuals". they use complex words as intellectual bravado just to make themselves seem really smart. reminds me of that annoying guy from the movie the Menu.
      but the things is a lot of their designs are shit and only a close community of architects can really appreciate. and if you say architecture is also for laymen, they think they have the intellectual high ground to say otherwise.

    It is really ridiculous to have one's preferred style as the ruling style of so called the epoch. The style itself could be novel however, let the history decide if it is the style of the epoch. As modernists did a novel break through and found opportunity to lead their epoch, nevertheless the later one's like postmodernists, brutalists just remained like small clubs. Schumacher keeps trying to get himself in the history by founding a novel style that shapes the epoch. And even this is not the first try. The world has serious problems and the architects are way beyond in this century than the ones on the former century to help solve it. We are really bored of such narcists that keep occupying agenda. Keep designing what you like to design and let the history decide if it is a style of the epoch.

    I love what Patrik brings, why these salty comments from the keyboard warriors? He is/was the business partner of one of the greatest visionaries of the 21st century (Zaha), I will always remember the first time I saw a Zaha design, absolutely exhilarating and enthralling. And initially made with insitu concrete. This guy facilitated the delivery of these previously abstract concepts. He deserves respect for this at least. Like or loathe, he has achieved, which I assume is a hell of a lot more than any of us you tube consumers have done. The best way to engage in this battle of ideas is to build your own ideas. While I don’t necessarily agree with global architecture or the organizational apparatus associated with it, parametricism doesn’t have geographical borders notwithstanding the capital premium and political will currently required to implement, however through a Creative Commons approach, the intellectual components could potentially be free via digital reproduction systems. Anyways, my take away is stop being salty and do something!!

      That's exactly the reason why the lecture is so bad. Because instead of staying where he is good at - whether that is delivering amazing projects or managing ZHA - he is trying to invent pseudo-styles or become a god-like persona for architectural history. The problem as many comments mention, is that a) he is not zaha, so he will never catch her architectural status or have the same place as her in architectural history and b) he cannot create a style because he wants and therefore that's why his lecture don't make any sense. Thankfully architecture is going into a phase where there will be no star-architects and therefore people like him who try so hard to become one, will be completely irrelevant.

    • @jaykay507
      @jaykay507 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Giorgossp-cq8hw Fair enough, but I still think people focus on his persona too much and not the substance of what he’s saying. He has some interesting ideas, sure they may be an amalgam, or derivative, but he’s entitled to say his piece. Parametricism is essentially advanced CAD capabilities and its permeation through all aspects of the industrial complex associated with the conception and production of architecture. You can call it whatever you want, but the idea is the essentially the same.

Ask/listen to his students. I personally think he is full of BS. He has never produced a line of code and when he talks about parametricism he does not know what he is talking about. I could write more but I do not want.
