New Testament Baptism Part 1

  • Part 1 of 2 interviews discussing the principles and practice of baptism.
Broadcast in 2007 on Finnish television.
What made a Methodist minister come to believe that infant baptism is unbiblical and then become a Baptist?
Although David Pawson was “baptised in the sight of the church”, he began to ask whether his baptism met the criteria of the New Testament. Was he “baptised in the sight of the Lord”?
After examining the relevant thirty-one separate passages of the New Testament to get the “whole picture” about baptism and its requirements, David concluded that he had not understood baptism at all and had been following the “tradition of the church”.
He discovered that “baptism, in essence, is a joint action between God and man”. To be baptised, the believer has to do things that “a baby is incapable of doing: hear the gospel, believe the good news, repent of their sins, and to call on the name of Jesus”. He came to regard his infant baptism as invalid, which freed him to get baptised “for the first time” as an adult. His conscience now prevented him from baptising babies.
These thought-provoking interviews, which David gave for a TV channel in Finland, stress the importance of baptism. He discusses the challenges that arose from his change of position on the subject as well as the new doors that staying true to his faith and convictions opened to him to preach the gospel.
In the first interview, David talks about New Testament baptism - what it was/is, its purpose, its requirements and why it is for adults rather than babies. He also covers some of the history of infant baptism.

This is the apostasy, the great falling away is beginning. Instead of praying for a church building where doctrines do demons are taught, pray God brings you to a true believer in the narrow way, fully sold out to Christ and separated from the world.

I love David's teaching and humble spirit.
I suggest rather than looking to a denominational church to belong to, it would be wise to be born into the church of the first born which started in Acts 2.
Do not start with a Baptist teaching on baptism, but look to the apostle who was personally given the keys to the kingdom.
Peter said, "Repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ..."
This is where scriptural baptism begins.

12:20 "Which of all the churches in England were practicing NT baptism.. and none of them were."
12:45 He references the Church of Christ, or the Disciples of Christ, in the US as the only denomination practicing NT baptism as he saw it.

You are misquoting David Pawson - Babies are not guilty of commiting "consious sin" and as such have noting to repent of - but that is very different to "original sin" - ALL have sinned and fallen short

@@noelenliva2670 you’re missing the point. All people are born within inherited sin, with a nature, predisposed to evil, but the issue is culpability. David was assured that he would see his baby again, and in Romans seven, Paul said that he was alive without the law once, but then the commandment came, sin revived, and he died. so just because one has inherited sin doesn’t mean that they are not alive unto God. When understanding comes, and that is different for all people, and we do not know when that is they die spiritually, and are in need of regeneration through repentance, water, baptism, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and the infilling of the Holy Spirit, John 3:5, ACTS 2:38, one Corinthians 6:11, Titus 3:5.

@@ryandawson2877 So inheriting sin does not mean that you're guilty of sin and so you can be spiritually alive. But how do you get that all are born with a predisposition to sin

Why is baptism in the new testament only?

    • @DavidPawsonMinistry
      @DavidPawsonMinistry  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Firstly its not
What many Christians do not know but Jews had been practicing ritual immersion in the form of entering into a mikveh, immersing ones selves and then emerging from that purified long before the New Testament
Thats why this teaching is called NT Baptism
John preached repentant baptised in water for the forgiveness of sins but he who is coming will baptise you in the Holy Spirit
After Pentecost ref Acts 2 Peter instructs those present to repent and be baptised for the forgiveness of sins - then you will receive the Holy Spirit
The difference in the New Testament to the Old Testament practice of Baptism is that Jesus is the Baptiser of the Holy Spirit is now with us

    “Is infant baptism wrong?”
Of course simply because there is no biblical authority for it. That settles the question; nothing else need be said.
