- After the White House confirmed 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods would go into affect on Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced incoming counter tariffs against the U.S.
“Tonight, I am announcing Canada will be responding to the U.S. trade action with 25 per cent tariffs against a $155 billion worth of American goods,” Trudeau said in an address to the nation Saturday evening.
Trudeau said this will include immediate tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods as of Tuesday, followed by further tariffs on $125 billion worth of American products in 21 days’ time to “allow Canadian companies and supply chains to seek to find alternatives.”
This comes after weeks of Trump repeatedly warning Mexico and Canada - two of the United States’ top trading partners - he will impose tariffs if the two countries do not end fentanyl trafficking and the flow of migrants across U.S. border.
Since the initial threat, Trudeau has held several meetings with Canada’s premiers, working through plans to bolster their respective border security efforts.

Canadian Mounties got to the St. Bernard parish of New Orleans to help its residents before the US government did. Let that sink in. That parish was literally underwater and the Canadians were the first ones there to help. The ingratitude being shown by the US government is appalling.

The Red states, his states are poorer than the blue states. The red states get lots of perks from the federal government and the blue states help fund these extra services. He could fund red states better if he got more money from blue states. Canada is a very blue state. We pay high wages. He's like our income tax for his red states. Also, of course, we are a bad example to the U.S. We have public healthcare to some extent. The U.S. does not. Americans look to Canada for support in their dream of "medicare for all". The tariffs that Trudeau put in place raises prices for Canadians, not Americans. It will reduce the amount of goods that Americans will be able to sell to Canada, as Canadians will buy less of the more expensive American products. Trump is the one raising American prices with his tariffs. Nobody in the middle or lower class wins in a trade war. Governments make money off their own people....we all just end up paying more. And we have the ability to buy less... I don't understand why any sane person would want a trade war.

While I agree Canada should up its NATO commitments and increase defence spending, I am not clear on Trump's comment that “Canada has relied on the US to defend them”. I do not recall any war that Canada has engaged in directly where the US has stepped in with military aid. I do recall that many thousands of Canadians have fought toe to toe with our American brothers and sisters in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf war and Afghanistan to name a few. Many of those soldiers did not return home.

Canada made a jet fighter called the Arrow which America didn't like.
If my nearly 80 year old memory serves me correctly America put on the screws on nations for America's fighter, which I believe was the F4 Phantom.
If that Arrow aircraft had been manufactured especially for "Commonwealth Wealth of Countries" then it and Canada would have been in better relationships today.
