I may be in the minority - but golf is golf to me. As long as the course is in decent shape, give me lots of extra rounds at a good local place instead of paying the price of one round at a destination course.
I couldn't agree more. At the level that I play that sort of green fee is just not something I would even consider. Many years ago I was at a conference in Surfers Paradise and a round at The Pines was one of the options on the Friday morning. In 1999 it was $A75 which is the most I've ever paid.

I'd rather pay £500 for the old course and play the castle course and the dukes with a b&b thrown in than pay a grand to play Turnberry.
Everything is pitched at foreign nationals. They have more disposable income than the average Brit.
Ridiculous green fees. Wouldn't pay more than £50 a round anywhere. Why would you?
Wouldn't give a penny to that orange waste of space .
