  • A friend's camper has been leaking for some time apparently and has rotted out the floor, ledger and joists. The local camper sales/service place wanted $2000 and one month to do the repair I just did for $240 in materials and 30 hours labor.

    Okay. So great job on the renovation! HOWEVER....this is hands down the best video I’ve watched about RV renovations solely because of the moment he shared with us at 15:32. He totally could have edited it out and I am thankful he didn’t. I watched that over and over like 10 times and just died laughing!!! 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣

      Thank you. That's the best review I read so far. I just had to leave that part in because when I was editing I played that for myself and laughed my ass off.🤣 I just knew others would get a kick out of it too.

      I ripped out my slide floor and replaced half of it over the past three days, I found more rot under where it rests on the main floor when out... Hoping the slide functions this afternoon, I needed this laugh and have done the same thing countless times the past 3 days, thank you!

    I got a free RV that was completely messed up from roof, ceiling, floors and walls. I am completely dismantling it from inside to see if I can repair and do something with it. WOW what a mess of cheap materials all put together. I feel like I'm dismantling a play house all made up of cheap siding, cheap everything. From this experience I would NEVER buy an RV it would be like throwing money away. Total crap. Btw, thanks for showing us your work repairing your friend's RV. You are a savior for your friend and a great tutor to us.

    Def one of the best videos out there about hidden rot in RVs and how to remediate the damage! Don’t do the skin deep repair. Open it up and find all the surprises and then truly fix it. This is what you did. Thx for showing it step by step!

    I can't believe how much work you did in so little time and you can barely tell that you did anything. You did such a good job of removing the existing pieces, i.e. the bed, the walling, even the door frame, etc., that you were able to put it back when done without it even really looking like it was removed. BRAVO!!!! Great job!! I am so so so impressed!! With all the water damage and wood rot that you found.... I'm just astounded!!!!

  • @Tsiri09
    @Tsiri09 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I love this video. It shows that initially, most people would have sealed the door or replaced a tiny section of wood at the door but ignored the rest. Although a good portion of the floor, joists and other boards had to be replaced, it is now ready for years of service. That "crimping" at the front is a tell-tale sign of wood rot and sagging or collapsed frame- I can use that a s bargaining point.

RV's are already overpriced and made with ridiculously cheap materials. Thank You for the video it is a great help as I begin to do the same repair

    Thanks for taking the time to show the process. I have an 2005 27' Zeppelin with electric slide ( not the dance, LOL). This unit is Ultralight construction, Aluminum frame with paneling inside and fiberglass outside with foam between. About 7 years ago I found a leak in the same wall you had to take apart. I thought the window was leaking and pulled it and resealed it along wit the one on the other side too just in case. Several years earlier fuel prices went to around $4 a gallon and I was laid off in late 2006 so needless to say we stopped going camping. We advertised the camper for sale but needless to say so did most everyone else during the downturn, recession, etc. NO ONE was buying. The unit sat in the storage lot, not convenient to our house, and we didn't check on it like we should have. The front PVC cap cracked and started letting in water into the front wall and we didn' t notice until about three years ago. I repaired the cap after finding out the manufacturer no longer makes replacements. My repare did not last and water started coming in again. Noticed the floor got soft evrywhere and discolored at the edges. Looks like the slide has been leaking too since the storage lot owner moved our unit to another site with a different lot pitch without letting us know. Last time I went over to check on it looks like a hail storms busted out a roof vent too. More water coming in. I pulled the vinyl back and the one you did here looks great by comparison ( before you fixed it). Ours is real goner. I do home repairs part-time for a living so guess I better put my big boy pants on and start the repairs before we have to just junk this $20,000 travel trailer we only got to use about 2 years. I just hope I can sell it after repairs are complete even if i don't recover all my time. That's what I get for not keeping up with it. Ugh! So, for the last 8 years I have been traveling mostly by motorcycle and camping in a tent. ;-)

  • @Suncatcher247

    This is the best video. It showed my how to face reality and do it right rather than half-assing the job.
    The only thing I'm planning on doing differently is using BUTYL rubber rather than putty tape. Putty tape is a lot like plumber's putty, which dries out over time and let's water come back in.
    Butyl products remain sticky and gummy for many years and if applied properly and should keep a good seal indefinitely. (50+ years)
    I love the way this man has shown how to slide the floor under the wall from the outside to obtain a quality repair as close to the original construction as possible.

    I can relate to the job you tackled as I bought a 22 ft NUWA from a friend and found water same where the original tub/shower surround was not sealed properly, causing lower wall and floor rot. Like you, I took my time and paid attention to what I was doing. Learned all about trailer construction what with all the glue and staples but it was well worth it when fifished.

    So well done! KUDOS!
    - I have the same repair work to do, with about the same extent of water damage, in a rear corner of my travel trailer.
    - I have searched TH-cam and seen a few vids of hokey repair work...and a few vids of high quality work like yours.
    - On a scale of 1-10...the strut / gusset you added took the work you did over the top to a score of “11”. (I wish I had welding skills.)
    - I will also try to Kilz the wood I replace when done for a little added protection.

      Alex Murray that’s because of the cancer causing chemicals in those waterproofing pains and treatments. Some states laws don’t allow it.

    • @kristinebeltran4219
      @kristinebeltran4219 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Treated lumber chemically reacts with the aluminum causing it to corrode.

    • @NYVET48TFW
      @NYVET48TFW 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Planned obsolescence. They do this on purpose. They could easily make the frame aluminum and use waterproof flooring and walls, but it would last too long.

    • @kristinebeltran4219
      @kristinebeltran4219 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @ASG66 pressure treated lumber is only used for the wall sills which touch the foundation/ground and nowhere else. Particle board, MDF, OSB are different and are treated with different chemicals that don't corrode metal unless moisture is present over a long period of time. I was a certified HUD building inspector so I know my building materials. I also have owned and had to do repairs on several travel trailers, including 3 vintage (pre 1970) ones.

    Nice work! I'd have never thought to put that extra metal joist under the meeting point of the flooring; that was a deed well done! Good going on catching the poorly-installed water tank, too. All of my RVs have had the water tanks inside the living compartment so the heater could protect them from freezing; I like to full-time in my RV, so that's a necessity. Perhaps that was just a graywater tank, though? Even that shouldn't be allowed to freeze, if you camp in cool places like Colorado or further north, where a freeze can be for months. (I put extra insulation under my RV, which helps some.)
    Good job shooting the job, also. I'd hire you! :)

    Great work. I'm fixing a $38000 toy hauler that's 4 years old and is twice as bad because the factory never hooked the shower to the grey tanks

    Hi from Fort McMurray, AB Canada....just bought a used camper and i wish i would've watched this video before I bought it. When I stepped on the step it came out because all the plywood was rotten underneath. I have no idea how to tackle this problem from the bottom. If I go in from the top like you did I will be able to see the extent of the damage (although the inside floor feels solid). Sigh....I do know that the bottom arouund the step is completely rotted out anyway. Thanks for the video at least I know that it can be done with some elbow grease.

    Oh how i wish there was someone like you where i live. :( We just found out the whole back corner is rotted out by the water heater... While traveling, a piece of siding pulled off, revealing the damage... There was no wood left to hold it in place... We are dreading this and don't know where to start!!! looks great, good job

    This video is literally the most helpful one ive found, I know it's been awhile, but we are dealing with similar repairs after being scammed :( the gusset you made, and those frame "outriggers" I didn't see how you attached it all together.
