@@murtylee6661 not necessarily haha. guru nanak, the founder of sikhi, was born into a hindu family but disagreed with the way they viewed god, more specifically the caste system. so, he broke off and created a religion distinct from both hinduism and islam. the goal of sikhi is to meditate on the name of God and to explore the wonder of the earth in communion with all people. just because that fell in line with protecting hindus and preaching freedom of religion at the time does not mean it was created solely for that reason. hope this explains it :)
7:25 the creation Khalsa is the reason Sikhs celebrate vasakihi every April 13 for 319 years. This day gave us the courage to stand up to all the oppression the moghuls had made us go through. It was also the birth of Amrit. The baptism ceremony in our religion.

Really interesting stuff, thanks for the explanation. I've always wondered about Sikhism's background and beliefs but hadn't really researched until now. Your video was fantastic, thank you.
Concept of God in Sikhism: MULMANTRA: THE FUNDAMENTAL CREED OF SIKHISM The best definition that any Sikh can give regarding the concept of God in Sikhism is to quote the Mulmantra - the fundamental creed of Sikhism, which occurs at the beginning of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. It is mentioned in Sri Guru Granth Sahib, volume 1 Japuji, the first verse: "There exists but one God, who is called The True, The Creator, Free from fear and hate, Immortal, Not begotten, Self-Existent, Great and Compassionate." Sikhism is a monotheistic Religion Sikhism enjoins its followers to practise strict monotheism. It believes in only One Supreme God who is, in the unmanifest form, called Ek Omkara. In the manifest form He is called Omkara and has several attributes such as: Kartar - The Creator Akal - The Eternal Sattanama - The Holy Name Sahib - The Lord Parvardigar - The Cherisher Rahim - The Merciful Karim - The Benevolent He is also called Wahe Guru - the One true God. Besides Sikhism being strictly monotheistic, it also does not believe in Avataravada - the doctrine of incarnation. Almighty God does not incarnate Himself in what is known as Avatara. Sikhism is also strongly against idol worship. Guru Nanak was influenced by Sant Kabir Guru Nanak was influenced by the sayings of Sant Kabir so much that several chapters of Sri Guru Granth Sahib contain couplets of Sant Kabir. One of the famous couplets of Sant Kabir is: "Dukh mein sumirana sabh karein Sukh mein karein na koya Jo sukh mein sumirana karein To dukh kaye hoye?" "In times of trouble, God is remembered by all But none remembers Him during peace and happiness. If God is remembered in good times of happiness Why should trouble occur?" Compare this with the following verse of the Qur’an: "When some trouble toucheth man, He crieth unto his Lord, Turning to Him in repentance: But when He bestoweth A favour upon him As from Himself, (Man) doth forget what he cried And prayed for before, And he doth set up Rivals unto Allah." [Al-Qur’an 39:8] The Sikh scriptures therefore emphasise monotheism and God-consciousness.
I don't like how when he explained the portion of Mool Mantar how he said it joins Islamic and Hindu traditions. It's not true, Sikhi is completely unique and not a combination is Islam and Sanatana Dharma so do your research next time and ask real Sikhs not Google!
Sikhism is one of the newest religions known to man and is an offspring created by a Hindu who did not likes the ways of the religions around him thus creating a knew one with his ideas and with people who shared his views following him
Choice of word are incorrect. 'Offspring'. When you do not agree with the current religion then you are no more offsping! 'Created by a hindu': Again, by birth guru nanak was hindu, but he never accepted that. Infact he clearly denied that. When he does not want to related to Hinduism and its rituals then there is no point he is an called a hindu! 'His ideas': Guru nanak said, 'Jaisi main ayi khasam ki bani'. He never said the idea is his own. Your intention may be correct. But the message conveyed is very Hindunaized.
@Siyovaxsh En-sipad-zid-ana lol "rejected vedas" how do u come up with such bs sayin whatever u want with 0 knowledge.. tell me thn where from mool mantra came from?
For lack of better terminology, Sikhism is the most rational, logical, "common sense" faith. It's too bad the East India Company destroyed the Sikh Empire.
You can say the same thing about Islam coming from concepts of Christianity and Islam. We all have our origins, but don't try to extract Sikhi from Islam and Hinduism. Guru Nanak spoke what God directed him to say. Prophethood isn't only limmited to the Muslim faith. God took mercy upon the Indians and sent down his Messengers (Guru Nanak) to guide humanity towards the truth and humanity of God.
ntg ism “ the last one being prophet Muhammad” There’s something so wrong with that statement. In truth, prophets will continue to come down on this earth to guide humanity. Anyone that says they’res is the last and final one is so full of ego. You have been tricked by Satan my friend. God is mysterious and looks at humanity equally, unlike Islam which sees non-Muslims as kafir. God bless, hope I’ve shed some light
ntg ism if you learned about the gurus, you’d realize that they are the greatest that have ever come upon this earth- completely perfect, not from my words but from they’re life actions and deeds
Great video on Sikhism intro. Despite being a Muslim, author showed no bias. Keep in mind Guru Nanak was not a "prophet" of semitic tradition. He was an enlightened Guru of Indian tradition - out and out a product of best of Indian spirituality which included the Bhakti movement.
Sal Khan truly is an Indian and a Bengali. The reason why I won't term him a Bangladeshi, because even he knows by virtue of his vast knowledge that India includes Pakistan & Bangladesh, because we have same origin & history, just that now we are politically divided.
I would so love to be a khalsa but i dwell in a well of self doubt. A fear of responsibility to my loved ones. But my farher anyways named me Dusht(evil) - anth(end) ..
The Sikhs main goal is to gain knowledge and keep learning until death. They also seek spiritual peace. They actually were the first people to propose the theory of many planets near the 15th century P.s plz correct me if I'm wrong.
Aryabhata and others did that thousands of years ago ,not just that they even gave diameters of various planets. While people like Galileo in europe were punished for saying Earth revolves around the sun just four hundred years ago.
Guru Nanak took the good and logical bits from Islam and Hinduism and made Sikhism but in the 16th century Sikhism changed and became more militant due to the Mughal invasion
The story of Sikhism is told here in a very brief, nutshell format, but very well presented. One thing that even most Sikhs erroneously describe is "Kacchera", one of the five Ks as 'underpant'. It is NOT an underpant as in the Guru's time there was no Pant. It is more appropriate to call it 'breeches'. It is a baggy breeches like "trouser' that that reaches down to below knees and was the favored trouser of the horsemen and warriors that would not cause any restriction to body movement during combat. Again, Kacchera should be translated as Breeches worn by warriors of the Gurus' time.

Note that the fight between Sikhs and Mughals might be more of political nature than religious. Jahangir, according to his autobiography, didn't have any problem with Sikhism until Arjan Dev made a political blunder of blessing Jahangir's rebelling son. Deep research in to the topic is still ongoing regarding the religious policies of the Mughal rulers today. New facts r being brought out. But it's generally known that common people try to put a story of "good Vs evil" , "oppressor Vs oppressed" to make their leaders matyrs and heroes in folk lore & stories. So one has to be careful while studying the conflicts in history, basically in a time today which is marred by communalism.
@Anmol Singh No, I have no religion here, though I'm well versed in basics of both Hinduism and Islam as compared to most Indians. @Anmol Singh ok, let's see what ur experience is. Let's do a small rational debate. Answer these questions 1. How do u know my religion. Can't Sikhs, Muslims, Hindus all not Indians? 2. Is it necessary for a Hindu to have a Hindutva political ideology that specifically targets Muslims & Mughals. 3. Can't a Hindu know about Islam & can't a Muslim not know about Hinduism? 4. How does someone talking/writing about a history topic reveal his religion to the reader? 5. Can't a Hindu defend a Muslim in a debate? 6. Btw, what's ur age? U talk as if u r younger than me, bcoz I also thought like u some years back.

When reforms are tried in some other religions, they are simply tagged as anti religion and reformers as Kaffirs .

Sometimes the history of Sikhism gives people the wrong idea that Sikhs hate Muslims. It is not true. We've lived together Sikhs and Muslims for a long time. No religion is evil. There are only good and evil people. and Jahangir, who was an evil human being happened to be a Muslim, just like I'm sure there are people who are Sikhs and are terrible people. Your religion doesn't define you, what defines you is if you're following the morals and the beliefs of your religion. If someone like Jahangir is forcing people to do something, he was never a true Muslim.

Its offensive to Sikhs and I am sure it is also offensive to other religions. Also if Khan Academy want to make videos on History of religion, the information should stay strictly historical and should not delve into theology.

Heyyy
Concept of God in Sikhism:
MULMANTRA: THE FUNDAMENTAL CREED OF SIKHISM
The best definition that any Sikh can give regarding the concept of God in Sikhism is to quote the Mulmantra - the fundamental creed of Sikhism, which occurs at the beginning of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
It is mentioned in Sri Guru Granth Sahib, volume 1 Japuji, the first verse:
"There exists but one God, who is called The True, The Creator, Free from fear and hate, Immortal, Not begotten, Self-Existent, Great and Compassionate."
Sikhism is a monotheistic Religion
Sikhism enjoins its followers to practise strict monotheism. It believes in only One Supreme God who is, in the unmanifest form, called Ek Omkara.
In the manifest form He is called Omkara and has several attributes such as:
Kartar - The Creator
Akal - The Eternal
Sattanama - The Holy Name
Sahib - The Lord
Parvardigar - The Cherisher
Rahim - The Merciful
Karim - The Benevolent
He is also called Wahe Guru - the One true God.
Besides Sikhism being strictly monotheistic, it also does not believe in Avataravada - the doctrine of incarnation. Almighty God does not incarnate Himself in what is known as Avatara. Sikhism is also strongly against idol worship.
Guru Nanak was influenced by Sant Kabir
Guru Nanak was influenced by the sayings of Sant Kabir so much that several chapters of Sri Guru Granth Sahib contain couplets of Sant Kabir.
One of the famous couplets of Sant Kabir is:
"Dukh mein sumirana sabh karein
Sukh mein karein na koya
Jo sukh mein sumirana karein
To dukh kaye hoye?"
"In times of trouble, God is remembered by all
But none remembers Him during peace and happiness.
If God is remembered in good times of happiness
Why should trouble occur?"
Compare this with the following verse of the Qur’an:
"When some trouble toucheth man,
He crieth unto his Lord,
Turning to Him in repentance:
But when He bestoweth
A favour upon him
As from Himself,
(Man) doth forget what he cried
And prayed for before,
And he doth set up
Rivals unto Allah."
[Al-Qur’an 39:8]
The Sikh scriptures therefore emphasise monotheism and God-consciousness.
I am Hindu but i have faith in sikh religion

Tolerance is the last virtue of a dying civilization.
I don't like how when he explained the portion of Mool Mantar how he

You are expressing your ignorance. Mool Mantra is adapted from Upnishads (conclusion section of Vedas). Obviously, you haven't read much.

God took mercy upon the Indians and sent down his Messengers (Guru Nanak) to guide humanity towards the truth and humanity of God.

ntg ism “ the last one being prophet Muhammad”
There’s something so wrong with that statement.

Yes
The story of Sikhism is told here in a very brief, nutshell format, but very well presented. One thing that even most Sikhs erroneously describe is "Kacchera", one of the five Ks as 'underpant'. It is NOT an underpant as in the Guru's time there was no Pant. It is more appropriate to call it 'breeches'. It is a baggy breeches like "trouser' that that reaches down to below knees and was the favored trouser of the horsemen and warriors that would not cause any restriction to body movement during combat. Again, Kacchera should be translated as Breeches worn by warriors of the Gurus' time.
even in Hinduism, there is only one God.. but different manifestations of this one God.

Sometimes the history of Sikhism gives people the wrong idea that Sikhs hate Muslims. It is not true. We've lived together Sikhs and Muslims for a long time. No religion is evil. There are only good and evil people. and Jahangir, who was an evil human being happened to be a Muslim, just like I'm sure there are people who are Sikhs and are terrible people. Your religion doesn't define you, what defines you is if you're following the morals and the beliefs of your religion. If someone like Jahangir is forcing people to do something, he was never a true Muslim.
